Why would Chase bank have their software setup that way? With every ATM I’ve ever used, you have to enter your PIN number again to do a second transaction. This was bound to happen with such an obvious vulnerability.

It was probably four cents cheaper per ATM this way. Typical Chase, really. The people involved need to contact the FDIC to get their money back--security cameras record everyone using the ATM and Chase can see it's not the account holders making these withdrawals.

because the feature is new so people do not know. when you insert your card, it tells you to remove your card. when i tap on the cashier, i never have to wait for a close section, so the people here probably thought the same. chase should have placed a message regarding that at the beginning of the transaction

I work at a bank and this has an easy fix: The host/network can change the ATM load so it requires a PIN entry before EVERY transaction. So even if someone waits for you to leave, and chooses yes for more transactions, they'll need to re-enter your PIN to actually complete the withdrawal. edit: I'm really surprised a FI as large as Chase isn't already setup this way.

I've noticed this on my local Chase Bank ATM screens. There's a function in the Chase ATM software so when you switch the type of transaction you're doing (such as balance check to a transfer between accounts), it'll ask if you want to do something else and require you pick YES then re-enter your PIN before it'll perform the second transaction. IF you just withdraw money the Chase ATM screen asks if you want to do something else after the withdrawl and you have to affirm 'NO' or 'YES' before it closes out. If the thief is right there he can slip in after you walk away and quickly choose YES and make another withdrawl before the machine's software automatically logs you off. I always wait and hit NO then wait until it logs out and I see the Chase advertisement on the screen before I walk away.

There are gas pumps where you have to make sure the transaction is closed. At truck stops or where there is a lot of commercial type traffic the gas pumps are set up to allow multiple vehicles to be filled up on the same credit card purchase. You have to make sure after you put back the nozzle in to the holder, you tap on End or Finish, or whatever is prompted. It happened to a family member where she did not terminate the transaction at a commercial type gas pump. She saw a bill from her card for a huge amount of gasoline. It took some arguing with the oil company head office for her to have a refund. Apparently, some other people behind her filled their vehicles after she left!

Because many people aren’t used to the tap function. Normally after you get your card back from the slot the machine is finished with your account. But if you tap, even though you have your card, the machine is still giving access to your account. So if you don’t think about it, you figure you’re safe because you have your card. They should reprogram the machines so that after you tap you can only get cash once; if you want more you have to tap again.

Seriously. As a web developer who has set up payment systems on websites that process credit card transactions, that is sloppy security or lazy programming. We take security far more seriously on websites than they do at banks. Go figure. Let's add near field communications to these terminals without thinking It it through. What could possibly go wrong. Wire the reader in and treat it like a second stripe reader. But wait, the other reader keeps your card until the session is over, could that be a problem? Nah... How could that be a problem? Lol.
@PhilLesh69
@PhilLesh69 Жыл бұрын
That's dumb. The pin is guessable or peekable. The chip or phone is a physical device. It would be far more logical, security-wise, to ask the person to tap again to continue. The pin simply verified who they were, but the chip, phone or card is the key. You should need the key for each transaction, not the pin.

That is a major software bug on Chase's part. The session should expire as soon as the first transaction ends and receipt confirmation starts. If another transaction is needed, then the person must authenticate again with their card. Bank of America has this process in place for their tap to authenticate.
@TarusMixes
@TarusMixes Жыл бұрын
It must be something specific to the tap function as well. As a Chase user no matter what it asks for your PIN # after completing a certain request before completing another one. For example, if I put my card in and want to check my balance, I have to enter my PIN and then hit account balances. The machine will let you go back to the main menu and see the options such as deposit or withdraw, but if you attempt to do any of those things it asks for your PIN again. It may vary from atm too but you usually only have about 10-15 seconds to do anything before it asks you if you need more time. Once it gives you that notification it will ask you for your pin again.

All you have to do is file a small claims lawsuit and sit back. About 10 days before the court date, Chase will contact you and inform you that they will pay you if you cancel the lawsuit. Then you tell them the full amount plus the $50 court filing fee and they tell you "no problem". They will never go to court because they know there is a 100% chance that they will lose, plus they have to pay thousands for lawyers as well. As far as that tap scam goes. Chase should require you to tap again if you wanted to make another withdrawal; that is the way it used to be handled when you slide the card in. It's not likely that someone would make 2 withdrawals sequentially. No matter what you do, always make sure you are logged out before walking away; whether it's an ATM or a website.

This is another fine example of the failures in common sense of the Pocket Protector crowd. If you place your card INSIDE the machine, then you cannot receive your cash until you remove your card. The machine does not have a programmed step similar to that wherein the program must KNOW you are complete before dispensing the cash, and thus once the cash door sends the money, and collection occurs, the program is ONLY going to end. This deficiency is a programmers' fault. It is common logic, but not to taped glasses types.

Something like this happened some years back, and I remember customers had to be reminded to log off the ATM after they were done. My bank changed the ATMs to completely eat your card while the account is being accessed, and not give the card back until after logging out. While tapping is a nice added alternative, it introduces this vulnerability, not sure what could be done to fix it outside the customers making sure they log out.

@@milesblue638 This. Chase is stupid AF. Im not in the US but thats how it works here. Also, theres a method to withdraw money without a card, you just make a withdrawal in your app, app gives you a code, scan it at the atm and thats it. Money doesnt leave your account until the atm gives you the money and if you dont pick up your money transaction is cancelled within 24 hours.

You allow them to do one thing and then re authenticate tap again to do something else. I mean it's not very hard to hold a card up to a reader again if you need to do multiple things. Otherwise if it's inconvenient for you then just do whatever on your own device. As it's a public ATM and generally only meant to dispense cash, check balances, or receive deposits.

The issue is not the tap function. The issue is that people assume after processing their transaction, without any indication to the atm, that the ATM should assume they're done. Why make that assumption, even if it's usually the case?

Leaving the ATM open is pure negligence in the design of those systems. The bank is responsible. In fact this is a big opportunity for a class action against banks that let this happen and don't make right by customers.

So the lawyers will get $12 million... and the customers will get $5 dollars and 75 cents. What's needed isn't a class action suit but thousands of successful small claim court claims with required full reimbursement. Or for this tv station to offer to publicize *anyone* who lost money this way.
