Suspiria (2018) has some of the most indescribable type of atmosphere of any horror film, let alone a remake, that I've seen before. Also, I agree Yutaka, Spencer felt like a true horror movie. The pressure on diana feels horrific and that jumpscare woke up the audience. (The fake ginger, Liam hating on the real ginger, Ms Chastain, how sad.)

This is one of my favorite sub genres of horror and film in general. Love it. Wrote this before hearing you alls picks, because I like to be surprised when someone says one I wrote. 🤷🏼♀️ So here by zero demand, is a list of 10 of my favorite atmospheric horror films: 1) Hitchcock’s Psycho- It’s a legitimate classic and still praised today for a reason. What reason is that? It’s BRILLIANT PERFECTION. To me, it’s also the first legitimate horror film of the modern age, perhaps the first slasher as we think of slashers; and from the moment it premiered, it changed filmmaking and the way in which horror films were shot, how the story was crafted, and the point of views shown. It literally revolutionized horror. Such an important film. Without Psycho, there would probably be no original Black Christmas (one of my favorite horror films of all time), no Halloween, no Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and no Scream, and the slasher genre would probably not exist as we know it today 2) Rosemarys Baby- One of my favorite films of all time, any genre, it’s simply a perfect film. In every way. That I never get tired of watching. Every single aspect of it is incredible 3) The Shining- The very definition of atmospheric horror, it’s the hotel, the costumes, the music, the intimate small cast in a huge palace, the superb eye of Kubrick, even the weather. It’s a film that puts the word ATMOSPHERE in ATMOSPHERIC . 3) Hereditary- Dread and Grief, the movie. Utica and I love this film. That’s all I’m gonna write 😂 4) Pontypool- Very under known, under mentioned film from the early 2000’s, I just adore this film; it’s a slow burn of taut, strange, and at times even darkly humorous, atmosphere that’s simply delicious. The atmospheric aspect here is also unique in that it’s crafted through the sound of spoken language and the lull of voice. Yes. Language can create atmosphere. Films are not just visual. Sound can soothe you. Especially when it's someone with a very pleasing voice. It can also freak you out. You could close your eyes and just listen to most of this film go and be very creeped out in many parts without ever having seen anything. Also, This hidden independent gem from Canada might just be a zombie film George hasn’t seen 🤔 5) Twin Peaks: Fire, Walk With Me- David Lynch, my all time favorite writer/director, is the master of atmosphere in my opinion. No one does it like Lynch. When this studio film premiered and turned out to be a horrifying atmospheric prequel, not a direct explanation sequel, to the original two season Twin Peaks tv show (a show that changed the face of television forever btw), fans were PISSED. 😂He’s since released the limited show Twin Peaks, The Return, finally wrapping up the open ended, and prematurely cancelled original show, but it took decades. Fire Walk is now a cult classic and regarded as exceptionally good, but in the 90’s, Lynch had the courage of his convictions to defy the fans and do what he always has: follow his own artistic vision, unwaveringly. And made an exceptionally atmospheric horror thriller that I adore. He’s a rebel in film, and I love him and this movie 6) Bug- The one time Ashley Judd made a horror film. WITH WILLIAM FRIEDKIN TOO. That sadly no one saw. Except me I guess? 😂 Again, small, intimate cast, doing a lot with a little, and doing it very, very well. This claustrophobic, unsettling film hailing from the 00’s, is a meditation on paranoia, the phenomena of group psychosis, and the prison of belief. To say anything else would spoil it, so I’m just gonna say, check it out if you haven’t seen it. It’s well worth it just for Ashley alone. She kills it. 😉also an early starring role from Michael Shannon that he slays in 7) Under The Skin- Horrific and very creepy Sci fi slow burn that has long periods of zero dialogue, and completely drenched in pure, unadulterated atmosphere. That is: Atmosphere, w/ no explanation other than she came, she killed, she ate 😂 8) Dark City- Ok. This one here is a goldmine of atmospheric sci fi. Dark, sinister, tragic, gloomy and strange, not until the pull back at the very end do we actually know where we’ve been all this time. Between the Matrix and Dark City, I’d pick Dark City every single time. This film is creepy AF, but it can also break your heart 9) The Village- My favorite M. Night film, with enough atmosphere to feed a village 😂 10) The Others- Oozing with abundant atmosphere, I adore this film. Love a good and spooky haunted house film anyway, but Amenabar outdoes himself here in holding tension shots uncomfortably long, draping everything in loneliness, gloom, fog and shadow, and building that atmosphere by giving you subtle indicators that things are off kilter, and very effed up. With one of my favorite endings in all of horror, Kidman is excellent here too I could literally go on and on; in fact even as I’m writing this I’m thinking “Crimson Peak, The Witch, Let The Right One In, Solaris (original), The Grudge, You Won’t Be Alone, Dead Birds, Eraserhead, The Blackcoats Daughter, I’m The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House, Possession, etc, etc, why didn’t I include these” 😩😆 but I’ve probably already written too much. Would love to know what the HH has seen and hasn’t seen from this list. Ok, see ya!

Great episode ❤, my top two picks for atmospheric horror would have to be 1965 repulsion and 2015 Crimson peak. I would have picked You're Next. I love how Erin uses the environment to her advantage by setting traps and using whatever tools is available to her to f@*# people up. The blender scene is one of the best things I've ever seen a final girl do. I would have also said Cube did a good job of utilizing the atmosphere where the room looks identical to the last but you have no idea what torturous encounter the characters were going to be facing.

Let me think... Regardless of Pugga calling me (and essentially Nick) basic, 😂, Alien obviously makes the list. I'm surprised David didn't say When a Stranger Calls, but close with Black Christmas. I'll also say, The Strangers, The Descent, Hereditary, The Lighthouse, The Shining, The Thing, The House of the Devil (that is a lot of "The"), Get Out, Nope, Identity, 1408, Tales from the Hood... Just to make a few off the top of my head. I at least think they count as atmospheric. 🤔🤷🏾♀️😂
