In today's video, we are going to talk about Atmospheric Instability and Stability.
The Stability of the Atmosphere is the tendency of the atmosphere to promote or to suppress the vertical movement of the Air masses.
The Air masses can have different characteristics compared to the surrounding air, they can be warmer and lighter or, they can be colder and heavier.
If an Air mass is warmer than the atmosphere it will rise and cool down initially following the Dry Adiabatic Lapse Rate and, once it reaches the Dew Point it will cool down following the Saturated Adiabatic Lapse rate.
If the Environmental Lapse rate is very small, the Atmosphere will have a tendency to be stable because the Air masses will cool down faster, became heavier thus, it won't keep on climbing.
The opposite is true, if the Environmental Lapse rate is big then the mass of Air will have the tendency to be warmer and lighter thus, it will keep on climbing.
In order to understand Atmospheric Stability, we need to understand the relationship between the Environmental Lapse Rate, The Air Mass Lapse Rate.

perfect topic !!!! this bacics knowleadge in terms of aviation meteorology are very usefull for glider pilots, but commercial pilots need it too !!!!! This is what old captains forget and thats why it is fine to remember :) again hovever it seems to be unusefull it is necessary to know . There are million reasons to watch this video ! I have very old meteorology book and sometimes I open it and refresh :) thanks a lot

Excellent presentation; just at the end you reduced the SLR with 2 degrees/1000', but should have been 1.5 degrees/1000'. Thanks for your energy input.

Gabrielle your video's really help me. You explain thinks so clear, you have a fan. I am a ppl student. I am reading the chapter about, high/low pressure area's, isobaren, thermische depression, subsidentie, the coriolis force on wind, and so on. Could you make a video about this issue. I would be very gratefull. If i pass my test you Will be the first to now!!!

thanks so much my question is why the ELR rate is not the same all the time sometimes 3c / 1000 and sometimes 4c /1000 and how can I know if 3c or 4c.
@PILOTCLIMB
@PILOTCLIMB 2 жыл бұрын
The real ELR changes constantly depending on the weather.. you should consult a metro station that reports the temperature at various levels 👍

(So I’ve used the winds aloft to get the ELR and I know the DLR is 3/1000ft )How do you calculate the SLR?
@PILOTCLIMB
@PILOTCLIMB 10 ай бұрын
The real SLR can change depending on the day. There is a standard SLR

No, that was just an example, in reality they change all the time depending on the atmospheric conditions
