On this Airstream Life vLog, we head out of Longmont for a day in Boulder Colorado. First stop is NCAR (the National Center for Atmospheric Research) which has a free museum. Steve wanted to be a meteorologist when he was a kid and still loves all things weather. This free museum was really interactive, great for all ages and incredibly informative. We loved the museum, the building and the views from the hikes surrounding it. Definitely a great stop outside of Boulder. After a quick stop at a brewery to try some local Boulder beer we ended the night at the Boulder farmer's market. Yum!

lol! I wanted to be a meteorologist since kindergarten. Went to Penn State for meteorology, worked 30+ years in the Navy & NOAA doing weather & ocean forecasting - and now teach weather and climate at Penn State. So this is my favorite video you've made to date!! Boulder is a 'hot spot' in the country for atmospheric science!

My son was in junior high when he decided to be a meteorologist. I told him there would be lots of math and science - and he would need to get good grades to keep all the doors open to colleges that had meteorology programs. He stuck with it! From that point on he said he was shooting for straight A's. Fast forward he graduated Summa Cum Laude from Valparaiso University in Indiana with a degree in Meteorology and minor in Math. He did several storm chases across the plains states and has been to that facility in Boulder a few times. He was president of a Meteorology honor society and did volunteer interactive talks and displays for grade schools. He went on to the University of Nebraska for his Masters and last year was hired by the National Weather Service in Des Moines, IA doing what he set out to do in junior high. He speaks at national conventions and has to defend his Masters thesis at the end of this year. Not bad for a 25-year old who's father had to take basic Algebra (a couple of times) and my wife only did Algebra-1 in high school. Steve, you ought to take the class to be a trained weather spotter. With your travels you could be a valuable source for the weather service.

Very cool! It sounds like your son set a goal and he went for it. Good for him! Steve says your suggestion is interesting. He had never considered that. He's going to look into it. Thanks for sharing!

The class is only 2 hours and free. Here is some basic info from the National Weather Service website and a link to where you can find a local class to take when you have time: Training is free and typically lasts about 2 hours. You'll learn: Basics of thunderstorm development Fundamentals of storm structure Identifying potential severe weather features Information to report How to report information Basic severe weather safety Link on NWS website to find a local 2 hour class: www.weather.gov/skywarn/wfo_links

We know quite a few of meteorologists. My husband worked at NASA-Goddard for a time. Most of his friends were meteorologists that he worked with. They all seem to be graduates from the University of Florida. I love to figure out weather. I am retired and now I am a Master Gardener in Maryland. We had to learn lots of weather information and I am fascinated by it all. NCAR would be a great place to visit. Thank you for sharing.

Need to come through OKC and stop at the National Weather Service Center sometime. Their radar system is top notch and best in the USA.

Did you learn how to avoid hail on your Airstream? Cindy’s uncle worked there for all of his career before retired helped to develop Doppler weather radar.

Forgot it's on Saturdays. Tons of organic fresh produce, live music and 'unique' people watching. Other fun free thing in Arcata is to take the Holly/Yashi Jewelry HQ tour. They make all their jewelry there, very interesting tour. Lots of state park camping between there and the Redwoods National and State Parks in NoCali..

Those exhibitions are so different from how they were when I was a child in the 60s and 70s. Back then you got instruments behind glass cases and a huge tract of text on a board. Sometimes there was a graph. That's as colourful as it got. Strictly no interaction!
