Most Audiophile reviews involve great equipment used to reproduce relatively simple music: 2 guitars bass and drums. A symphony Orchestra has 4 ranges of bowed string indtruments, which I have read have the most complex series of overtones, which is why we can listen to them for longer times without fatigue. Add 4 or so woodwind instruments, about the same 4 ranges of brass and timpani which I love and you have a difficult test for your equipment. Dynamic range is used more by orchestral composers, the sound of a solo flute to the full 100 or so members of a symphony Orchestra offers a composer many ways to refresh the ears of the audience. Orchestral music gets loud but it isn't always loud. It is a great way to evaluate your system. Opera brings in the human voice to add to the variety of sounds, and often tests the equipment to the max.

@@barney6888 Amplifiers got good a long time ago so power is cheap. Surround sound recievers offer a lot of power for suprisingly low cost. I like the Denon line. U-tube and CDs are great sources. 11:27 With FR speaker drivers the highs roll off on some. But I add a tiny piece of foil in the centre and it extends the highs. Foil makes the treble noticeable with strong cymbals. But tinsel (instead of foil) makes the treble "just there" and handles bad recordings better (but when treble happens you hear it and it's still extended). I use tinsel for bright FR drivers and foil for dull FR drivers. The tinsel is better cos it has a natural sound and a "live" presence to the treble. Not a "whizzy" tweeter sound, more like a real sound (not "trebly" but still full on treble).

Great review of a device which everyone may agree on is a no BS kind of gear! I am proud owner of the "AM200sig" power amplifier. Build quality is impeccable. Excellent workmanship. Atoll does not yet follow that questionable "balanced" hype, which is a plus to me. Their top-tier gear features XLR, anyway. I prefer that amplifier over Class D gear by Purifi or Ncore as it might not measure as well but passes through the sound more convincingly. If you wanna go for Class AB when it comes to pricing I think Audiolab(IAG), Roksan and Rogue Audio might by closest rivals.
@lisar39443 ай бұрын
I was a bit bent out of shape about Atoll not having balanced inputs on anything aside from their highest tier equipment, then I got real and remembered that a large part of the reason single ended is "worse" is because in many devices that have a balanced architecture, they treat the single ended path as an afterthought and it is often inferior for that reason alone. That's not even to mention how many manufacturers include balanced inputs for some kind of cred, but nothing about the device is "balanced" beyond those plugs. I am over that now :) I'm also with you that chasing "perfect measurements" leaves me a bit cold...I have been running lower tier class d devices for a while and they have truly been fine, but I wanted to take it up a level. So I was considering a hypex or purify, and then on a whim I ordered the IN50 just to remind myself what A/B is like and holy hell. Yeah it may measure "poorly" but it makes my ears a lot happier so far. I don't even think Atoll's version of A/B is normal - as I understand it they use zero feedback to clean things up but the result seems to be even more natural and pleasing for my tastes. Old school approach. I dig it.

Hey Steve, how would you compare it to the Schiit Ragnarok 2? And when talking just about DAC to the Schiit Modi? I have to make a decision soon!
@lisar39443 ай бұрын
I am testing one of these now, and I agree with the point that it has "soul" - and how! I don't agree, though, that it's very neutral. It does sound "warm" to me, and vocals especially are a bit forward. The warmth is actually what I was hoping for so no problem for me! The forward vocals have been a bit strange on some tracks as they make the presentation sound overall louder in some way - but the rest of the music is fairly laid back which sounds a bit unbalanced. Then again! I've only put in about 8 hours on this thing so it may even out with time (or I'll just get used to it). The lower mids are a bit fatty which I'm not sure I like yet. I think this is what is lending the sense of warmth, but I can't quite say it's "bad", just very different from what I'm used to. It's coupled with Triangle Comete 40th speakers and this seems like a very good mix so far. I'm still evaluating various genres but so far nothing has sounded unpleasant at all. I'm still feeling a bit iffy about separation, especially with big orchestral numbers but it does great with chamber music and even stood up quite well to the "Queen of the Night" arias from Die Zauberflöte which is an important test for me. She didn't go nasal or shrill or "buzzy", which is a problem I've had with some other amps...None of that - this amp did her justice with a cherry on top - just pure, perfect, clean, acrobatic vocal insanity. Really impressive. Less demanding but often more likely to sound unpleasant 80s recordings have been pretty good so far - I'd say they have a bit more body which is welcome as they tend to sound a bit thin with some equipment - ie equipment that is really transparent! I'm coming to the conclusion that if "transparent" means I can't fully enjoy all the music in my collection, send me to the dark side with a bit of colored equipment. I have nothing to prove ;) Anyway I do like it a lot, but I am considering trading this in for the IN80 - slightly more power, beefier supply, double the capacitance and double the dynamic power which may well make the difference in terms of complex recordings. I listen at low to moderate volume in a smaller room so an IN100 or above would be completely wasted on me. Ah and for anyone who cares about power consumption, in standby (main power switched on, front power button turned off) it's pulling about 10W. In use it seems to fluctuate between 10-16W depending on volume and musical complexity. No worse than my last class d amp. I'm astonished :D

Herb's setup requires six and a half hours... ie., 90 minutes of setup, 5 hours of anecdotes. You know, that'd be one helluva side hustle for him; HR's Turntable Setup and Optimization, hire him out in 8hr blocks. Indeed, the storytelling would be the best listening session ever!

Class D has gotten better but when push comes to shove, I still trust Class A/B more. A comparison with the Rega Elex-R (also class A/B) would have been fairer. It is comparable in price to the IN50 when the phono stage is added. It is also a "no frills" amp with no tone controls (don't miss 'em). I own the Elex-R and think it would be hard to beat for PRaT and overall musicality at this price range. I read another review of the IN50 describing its sound character as "dry." In all likelihood, the Rega has a somewhat warmer sound. I would also have some concerns about the availability of Atoll products in the U.S. Nonetheless, the IN50 appears to be a great value but I would definitely want to audition before buying.

I have the younger brother of the Elex-R, the Rega Brio. I thought it might have been a fairer comparison considering the power and price.

I am testing the IN50 at this very moment, and "dry" would be the last word I'd use to describe it. At least with my Triangle Comete speakers it's quite warm while still being reasonably detailed. The lower mids are a bit fatty - so far that is the only aspect that I find hard to get used to. It's not bad, per se, just a bit thicker sounding than I'm accustomed to (coming from class d) With 80s music this is actually a nice improvement as it gives it a bit more body...somehow it still sounds a bit ponderous to me though, in spite of the device having an overall very lively character. Let's see.

I guess I need to listen to Yessongs again. My memory of that record is that is sounded like the band was filtered through a tin soup can. Maybe that was my system at the time, I do remember a Campbell’s soup label was involved somehow.
