This has been an outstanding experience, I know it must be a pain to get 25 vids in 25 days but it truly IS like an advent calendar. If you have the desire/ability to make this a yearly event, I think I speak for many of us in that we'd love it. To make it easier on yourself you could do a "12 Days of Christmas" version that is only half as taxing to produce. The marshmallows yesterday brought back such strong memories, I could smell the woodsmoke, feel that gooey molten lava on my fingertips and tongue. I spent a lot of time in the woods growing up, and toasted marshmallows and hotdogs were staple goods I brought along. Several episodes have hit me like that, and I'm sure many have had similar experiences of their own. I might never need to make a basket, but as I'm an avid bushcrafter, knowing how to could come in very handy someday.

In my little corner of the world, we have pine straw for basket making. The needles of Southern Yellow Pine tend to be about 14 inches long. Bundled together and stitched with raffia, the needles can become quite a nice basket. I've only made one quite tiny basket but watching this I'm thinking that I should give basket making another go. Thanks for the inspiration!

Slow TV how lovely you are correct in saying it is relaxing. have to play back some Americans at 75% people speak so fast only confirming their lack of wisdom. By coincidence I am planting Willow this year so so this is a timely reminder of traditional arts. Best

I, for one, appreciate your dedication to stick wrestling to bring us this bit of the calendar. Lovely basket. 9:56 Semantic satiation. When we were children, one of my sisters and I used to do this with single words for fun. We would also stare at a point in the distance without blinking which caused all surrounding detail to fade. Fun with the senses.

Years ago, the school my youngest was at would teach the kids weaving from withies they cut with them. The whole thing took a week or so - 1 day to do the cutting and hauling the withies back to school, the next was putting them in the bath to soak, then they'd come back once a day to check the progress and change the water, one day to tie the hoops, and the last to weave, and this was the longest part of it - and why we saved it to Friday when everyone's tired.

Some years ago, as a teacher, our school took part in a lantern display and parade in December. Each year there was a theme and we had to create giant lanterns by weaving withy stick frames (we used willow withies) then covering them in tissue paper and lighting them up with LED lights. Oh my goodness, was that a trying time 🤪Can you imagine working with up to 20 children at a time, bending withies into the shape of a butterfly or dragon (or whatever the theme was) then covering them with tissue paper?! The amount of masking tape, PVA glue and sheets of tissue we used was ridiculous! The parade itself was magical though, so I suppose it was all worthwhile!

You're like the epitome of the old saying: 'Busy hands are happy hands' - which I deeply agree with from personal experience. Although I do realize, that it's unfortunately often used to chagrin 'lazy' people, rather than spreading the joy of leading an active and creative lifestyle. I do wonder, if the saying was originally used in a positive or negative context.

I have never tried making a basket using hoops but I think the method I learnt, starting with slips & slaths to start the base & then weaving up from there & joining in new withies as needed probably would be easier when using shorter materials.
@sarahstrong717410 күн бұрын
You could also make it easier by using some longer withies that maybe have had the bark stripped off & been soaked to help form the structure.
