These pies were sent from heaven. They shouldn't taste very good, but instead are some of the best food on the supermarket shelves. Of course, we're all turned into pansies arranging food on a plate like it's part of an art installation - but come on. These are better than all that. Perfection. I knew something was going wrong as soon as the guy failed to eat it right from the can. Who puts this on a plate?!?! Madness.

We used to have them in he 70,s,,,,,lots of meat and the pastry was tasty. I bought one last year, couldn't wait for ir to be cooked,,,,,, and,,,,,,, 😵 it was awful

I do enjoy the Fray Bentos ‘snake and pygmy’. I’ve been eating them for years and never had a bad one. If I did , I’d stop buying them, simples!

I reactivated my old mail address I only use for scambaiting, and replied "ok" to a bunch of scammers. One of the scammers is already fed up and said "stop saying ok ok ok in all your mails. If you are not serious let me know." I mean... what else is there left to say for me, other than "ok"?

I remember those steak and kidney puddings in a pudding bowl shaped tin that you pierced the top with and placed inside a pan of hot water to simmer for however long it was, then would remove it, take off the lid in the usual way, then quickly place it upside down, (or better still, placed a plate on to it and turned both upside down), and hopefully, the pudding would slide out. The pastry part wasn't at all crisp, and was probably never meant to be, but having soaked up a lot of the juices within was delicious.

Oooooh, I like your observation re the oven temperature control; presumably rotating the knob 90 degrees from top == 90 degrees C?

Yep - the degrees of rotation are the degrees of temperature - of course this only works with degrees Celsius as you would need more than 360 degrees rotation to get top oven temperatures in Fahrenheit

It's the soggy underlayer that I don't like. The pastry on top is crisp and tasty, but the pie is let down by the soggy pastry underneath. You'd think that the manufacturer could have found a way by now to improve the soggy pastry part.

Hi Mike, how are you enjoying your new kitchen, oven and cooktop? Your carbonara looked delicious! I’m 70 and I cook a lot of all sorts of foods, but I have always avoided making carbonara because it’s so easy to overheat the egg yolks and ruin the dish. Tipping the canned carbonara into a sieve to drain all the sauce might improve it somewhat but it probably isn’t even worth bothering to do that😂😂😂😂😂. The sauce looks slimy! Yetch.

I'm enjoying it - whilst the new cooktop doesn't quite have the immediate fierce heat of gas, it is vastly easier to keep clean. I did find that it doesn't like pans with shiny bottoms - I think the heat gets reflected back down and causes the heating element to cycle off more than it otherwise would, which slows down cooking - for pans with dark or just non-shiny bases, it is surprisingly rapid to heat (I think it actually outperforms gas on getting cast iron up to temp)

I've been eating these pies since the 70s and absolutely love them, one pie makes a lovely tea with some mash and veg. One thing you didn't touch on is how expensive they are now compared to years ago when they were sold cheap as a loss leader in many stores. Sadly I can only afford to buy them these days when on special offer somewhere.

i agree with the oxo good grips being naff, i dont like it either, it cuts weirdly and its not the easiest to use
