How did you clean the glass?! What is this miracle technique!

Wood ash contains potash lye - the wood from the previous fire, plus water, creates a cleaning solution that will shift any buildup of wood tar on the glass. It's probably also finely abrasive, but not hard enough to scratch the glass. If the fire is burning properly, the glass only needs cleaning a few times throughout the winter, but yeah, water plus ash will do it.

Theres that pig again! Stealth star of the advent 2024. After going on a 20 minuet trek to the bus stop for my bus to not arrive (they are once every two hours), returning home, and drying off from the wind, wet, and cold. It was nice to sit cozy and warm with this as a psychological warmth boost.

Shrimp Cottage looks amazing in the snow, that opening sequence was brilliant. Gentle snowfall days are the best, you can go for a ramble and not get blasted by wind and blinded by snow, or you brew up a pot of coffee and read a book/watch a movie and gaze at the snow thru the window. There's something almost primal about a little iron fireplace like yours, feeding logs in, feeling that warmth and staring into the flames.

Unfortunately, real fires are a lot of work. When I had one. I always wished for a real parlourmaid to rake out the ashes , set the fire, light it successfully (the Shrimp makes it look too easy) then tend it hourly. In between times, she could cope with the extra dusting and carpet cleaning caused by the fire 😟

Thanks for the lovely video, no words needed to explain it, the snow and even Eva played a part in this story. (A dog asleep in front of a log burner is a lovely sight.) By the way, I make my own fire lighters by dipping pine cones in melted candle wax from spent scented candles and the BabyBel wax cases. Let them dry and then use three per fire. I collect the cones during the year when walking in forests and woodlands. Thanks for posting, I'm really loving these. ..... Just about to light my log burner.

After the last fire dies out in late winter or early spring, it's easy to forget about it completely until the next season. I've gotten in the habit of doing a bit of cleanup in the summertime. I'll fully clean the firebox, ashpan, and glass, and even build the fire to start the next season. It always looks nice even when not in season, and it's lovely to have it ready and waiting on that first really cold day.

For anyone wondering what's happening at 2:15, wood ash is a beautiful solution to cleaning the glass in your oven. Soap used to be (or still is being) made with ash because of the potash lye. There is absolutely no need to buy products for these types of applications. My dad sells wood stoves and this is one of the pieces of advice he gives to every single customer. Also sidenote: if you oven window frequently turns black, it's because you are not giving your oven enough air. For anyone that wants a longer explanation: the combustion is less complete and you end up with a ton of byproducts which get caught in the water vapor released by the wood as it burns in its initial stages. The glass windows is the "coldest" part of the oven, so that's where the water vapor condensates on the most.

I live in a pueblito (pop. 300) in the foothills of the sierra Nevada, near Granada, Spain. We're having a cold snap just now, ground frost in the morning and sub zero temps. Trying to warm these houses is a challenge, as they're built to be cool and move heat out. I'm just about to light my log fire, which I'm not great at doing, so watching The Shrimp Technique has been helpful. I especially like the glass cleaning trick, thanks for that! It's a beautiful day here, the usual clear blue sky and sunshine, but that means no insulation come nightfall. I hope all is well in the Shrimp household. X

This was a hit of nostalgia! My childhood home was primarily heated by woodstove in the winter. My dad had put up a section of picket fence in front of the hearth, to keep us kids from getting too close and burning ourselves when we were little, and we'd hang our stockings up on the fence-posts. The cats figured out pretty quickly that my brother and I couldn't get the gate open, so they're jump onto the hearth anytime they needed a break from dealing with loud, clingy little monsters like us.

I recognize and appreciate the ritual in a wood stove. I usually will fire up in the morning before its light. After kindling and ignition, i will sit on the ottoman, opposite the stove and just stare at the fire. This truly feeds my soul in the winter months. It has been many years since I've been in a house with a working fire-heating setup. Growing up, it was always the kids' responsibility to set the fire up, usually around midday, so it could be lit in the evening as soon as the cold started to settle in. I know my little heat pumps are far more efficient and such, but I sometimes look back at those days and remember the calm evenings, with the TV off, reading and chatting around the open fire my dad built.

Very lovely video, wouldn’t have minded if it was longer! I always love to put on fire videos in the background, but a lot of time they are looped and that just feels weird, a human subconsciously knows what a fire should look and sound like, logs burn down, they don’t keep re-appearing from the ashes like a fenix. Every sound is unique and at random, in looped video’s you quickly pick up on the pattern. It’s a rare breed of people that manage to pull of real life long fire video’s. And I think you are one of them. Don’t worry, Eva barks are welcome. Warm greetings from the Netherlands🇳🇱.

Cant beat a log fire in the winter, who would of thort ash would bring a gleam to a oven like glass window! I would pop some tatties in foil in there just because I love baked tatties done on an open fire rather than oven/microwave, like my skins almost burnt.
