For me it's actually the small vegetables or fruits that make me happy. What you find in the supermarket looks mostly so oversized and unnaturally perfectly shaped. But then once in a while I find a gooseberry or a carrot or something among the bunch that just looks like it could have grown in my grandmother's garden

I think having hobbies that results in something tangible, like cooking, foraging, gardening, art & crafts etc... go a long way to giving a sense of accomplishment and that dopamine hit. It doesn't surprise me you are a happy person given the types of activities you like to do in your day to day. I try and do the same, it's hard sometimes as I often fall short of the thing I was trying to achieve, but my dad always told me, "just because you aren't good at something, it doesn't mean it's not fun"

The quirkyness of old houses is the best part, for sure. My cousins had an old Victorian that needed one more bedroom. They kitted out a storage room over the back porch for their young son. The bed was a frame made of galvanized pipe with cargo netting to support a mattress. There was a porthole window and the door opened into the upstairs bathroom. The sign on the door said Mate's Quarters. It was a wonderful space for a little boy, though it wouldn't pass muster under current building codes. No one over the age of 10 could stand up in there! I think I would still use it if the window could be enlarged to create the required secondary means of egress. The rest of the house was just as interesting as the family had lived there for a couple of generations.

I had no idea bees lived underground until one day I was in my garden doing some weeding and I felt what I can only describe as a mini earthquake beneath my foot. It was like something was pushing hard on the sole of my shoe. I moved aside and saw the earth moving. I expected a mole or something else large to appear, but all that came out was a tiny buzzy bee. I had no idea bees are so strong! :)

We have bumblebees in the garden that live underground. And apparently also some insects living underground that look like wasps. Kinda funny story - I once saw a wasp wriggling out of an earth hole, butt first, looking like it worked really hard, and then it dragged out an earthworm and shoved it to the side before going back inside the hole. Lol The worm was wriggling around the hole for a while. If it had a facial expression it probably would have been of utter confusion. And then it went back into the hole too. Lol

It's not a serious operation to have; in fact compared to most operations it's relatively pain free. But there's going to be some time before this happens, so I'm going to make the most of that time by doing the things I enjoy.

I feel the same way you do about onions, except about tomatoes. Great big heirloom tomatoes with weird shapes, that have slices the size of your hand when you cut them up. I was overjoyed to discover my local store not only had red ones, but also yellow ones this year. The slight translucency of tomatoes skin makes the yellow ones look so pretty.

Serendipity is a farmer's market bin of heirloom tomatoes in a glorious range of colors, shapes and sizes! When I was invited to "pitch in" at a posh committee/ladies luncheon, I skipped the cookbooks and brought a basket of those tomatoes, my turkey platter and a sharp paring knife. Set a pot of salt and a flagon of olive oil alongside, et voila!

You might enjoy making lacto-fermented celery! I make it diced fine with dill and once it is pickled, it makes a very tasty addition to mayo for chicken or tuna and would be good with fish fingers like you did in this video. It keeps very well in the fridge and has tremendous flavor and stays crunchy.

I love the eclectic mix here and think that is the answer to anyone searching for happiness. Even the downbeat bits (beach rubbish, seed failures) contribute to the contentment experienced watching your videos. Loved to see that fake tartar sauce - just recently I've been doing something extremely similar. My partner's intolerant to cucumber so normal tartar sauce made with cornichons is out; I've been doing exactly what you did here, using my own lacto-fermented pickle made from broccoli and yellow bell peppers, and it hits exactly the same spot. Ultimately the flavours you want out of tartar sauce is just the rich mayo with a combination of salt, acidity and vague fruitiness, and I suspect almost any lacto pickle mixed in is going to mostly tick those boxes.

@@higherquality I don't know, it could be wind-driven pollen, too. I did not plan to make spicy tomatoes, I just planted them next to my peppers (jabaneros) and the tomatoes were very spicy. They're all part of the same family (nightshades) and there might be something going on in the soil or roots, also. The experiment could be to plant tomatoes close to peppers in a common pot, then plant tomatoes close to peppers in a separate pot (but just as close). If the tomatoes are spicy in both situations, it is something pollen or atmospheric, but if not, it comes from the common soil. I might try that this summer.

Regarding which way to slice the sandwich: I always cut mine into three parts because that's what my mother used to do with my school lunch sandwiches. My family moved house often so I was always the friendless "new kid" in class and that made me miserably unhappy. That odd three-way sandwich slicing pattern was my mother's code to remind me that I was loved. Years later and mother long ago passed away, I still smile when slicing sandwiches into three parts.

I find something about comment positivity, encouraging positive comments, fits very well with the concept of intentionally doing something you know will make you happy. Haven't thought it out much, but it's got something alike, I think. "it puts the lotion in the basket" Never thought I'd hear that reference in such a disarming and nonchalant tone, lol. *Edit:* I would suggest that box was, perhaps, a tad oversized for the product within it.

You saying you really enjoy finding large onions at the store reminded me that one of my greatest little joys in life are the gigantic boxes of pumpkins at grocery stores in the fall. and i don't mean carving pumpkins or pie pumpkins, although those are good too. i'm talking warty goblins, knuckleheads, luminas, all the weird boys. my absolute favorite are cindarellas. multiple times i've picked up a soft pinkish orange cindarella while at the store and just not put it down for up to twenty minutes. so pretty, smell so nice, feel so good to hold. i made the trip home on the bus line with one once because i couldn't bring myself to pass it up. i had to transfer lines twice on the way home and it was still worth it. i'll probably force one into my bike's saddle bag in a couple months. praise be to the produce section

About little bits of positivity. When Eva does her alarmcall(whowo whowhowho who!) Try instead of saying shut up Eva..Try saying with a calming friendly voice: It's allright Eva, that's the ....(craws, traffic, the neighbours a cat...or whatever it is)So you name the subject. It's a sign of insecurity and wanting to protect. It's up to you to make her aware that this is not a threat...you don't need to protect us from that! It really works. (of course she needs to have time to soak up the new information) But shouting at her is telling her..see..he is upset too. The great wonders of a dog brain.. The dogs that guard the best and bark most are insecure. My insecure dog warned me for people on the roof of building across the street, neighbours walking in the staircase, and on a holiday...horses in the field or free roaming chicken. Confirming what it is ,and that it is oke stops that alarmcall. little edit I enjoy your video's and think you are a great dog owner that takes great care of her doggy needs.. My insecure dog went from alarmcall to one single bark for strange things or doorbell or one low growl if he really is'n't sure about a new/strange noise...like did you hear that?..and yes..then i say..yes i heard it .confirm what it is and say it's oke too.For neighbours ect he doesn't bark anymore..those are normal now. And when i don't hear anything..I say thanks for letting me know, i'll protect you...and then say it's allright..but that is about a single bark or growl 🙂 Much better..i live in a appartement.

I'm a happy person, I'm very lucky and grateful for that every day. I've stopped doing things that make me unhappy and that includes choosing to only spend time with friends and family who uplift me. I don't struggle to meet expectations any more, I accept who I am, warts and all. I have many hobbies and keep picking up new ones and that is thrilling for me. Small things bring me joy like my cat purring, light refracting into my house and making rainbows on the walls, saying hello to shiny beetles when I'm out for a walk. I've realised how perfect my job is for me as it allows me flexibility and lots of work outdoors, and I appreciate being there. I love the changing seasons in the UK, particularly spring, particularly May, so I'm happy as Larry right now. I enjoyed watching Intense Shrimp putting together the Transformation Robot, thanks 😁

I call seeking happiness "spoon foraging" (for... reasons) and I have some tips on this that are hopefully helpful for people who worry a lot. I am a big worrier and have often had times when dread about an upcoming thing can ruin my day, but it is possible to learn to get around this. The worry may not go away but you might find it can co-exist with happiness. Three things that have helped me get to this point: 1. Working on being aware of what emotions I am feeling and being honest with myself about it (hard work; if anyone reading would find it helpful I can share how I do it in a reply). 2. When I don't feel in the mood to do spoon foraging, even though I know it would help, I try to speak to myself kindly and encouragingly about it, rather than giving myself a hard time. That makes it more likely I'll do it! 3. When I've been spoon foraging, I come back to 1 - what do I feel now? That way I have information about what types of spoon foraging help in different situations.

​​@@EggBastion 😂 Sometimes people (including me and my partner) use the metaphor of "having spoons" or "not having spoons" to talk about energy levels especially in the context of disability-related fatigue. It was a short step from there to "making spoons" or "farming spoons" etc to describe things that help with fatigue or energy levels. For me, "foraging for spoons" fit best because it's usually time in nature, sometimes literally foraging, that helps me regulate fatigue and emotions. I go out with a small number of spoons, I come home with a lot more spoons 🤷‍♀️
