Giant Puffballs - Foraging, Cooking and Tasting

Some friends of mine have a local orchard and one of them invited me to forage giant puffballs in part of their adjacent woodland.
So let's take a look at this curious fungus, and cook some and eat it.
Foraging books sometimes mention that this fungus can grow to such size that it has been mistaken for sheep, although tantalisingly, they never seem to cite who made that mistake. I suppose it is plausible - the largest recorded specimen was apparently 1.62 metres across.

Thank you! I just decided quite a while back that if something is interesting to me, it's a good thing to pursue it, no matter how pointless or weird other people might think it at first - it's a really effective way to extract enjoyment from a fairly normal life - and it turns out after all that people do actually like to see or hear someone enjoying what they do, even when it's pointless or weird.

I used to work as a guard in an empty country house. It had extensive gardens, and a gardener - he knew all the edible fungi, and showed me where they were - other than the Chanterelles, as he used to sell them to a local gastro pub. One day, he knocked on the door, and presented me with a giant puffball, that he'd found in the old watergarden area, below the Ha-ha; half of which I cut in slices, and fried for lunch, the other half, I took home for my parents to enjoy. A rare treat.

I love puffballs. At the place I used to work at, we got a ton from a forager. Deep fried breaded slices on a big ol' sandwich. Amazing.

I just found you. Loved to watch you eat those, kinda reminds me of a squirrel for some reason. We had puffballs in our garden during the 80's and early 90's. Sadly mom wanted the fruit trees gone. The puffballs went away with them.

We never jazzed them up w/all the seasoning. An elderly Sicilian restaurateur told us they should be pan fried as you would a nice steak. We floured them and sauteed them in butter, lightly salt the "steaks" just before you take them from the pan. Yum!

Cut them in 2 inch slabs so they are stronger. Peel comes right off. Good raw, or with raw veg and salad dressing. Hadn't thought to batter them. Sounds good ))) They freeze well, dry well, powder well. Keep large harvest for years. Good in soup. They do gobble up the butter if fried without batter. ))) Salt and pepper, garlic and onion O MY!!!

Just had my first giant puffball last week. I was able to have fried leftover potatoes, along with a slab of puffball, 1/2" thick, sauteed in butter with salt and pepper for breakfast for four mornings. After that, the rest of it started going all brown and mushy and so I chucked it in the compost heap. Delicious lightly browned. I would rate it #4 wild shroom I have had so far, taste-wise.

I grew up in Co.Kidare ,Ireland in the 1970`s,we'd always pick our own mushrooms to be fried for breakfast ,would always see a lot of these puffballs in the fields but never ate them, they were always called "sheep's farts" down our way.

Thank you for this interesting video and that you avoided a lot of annoyances with some cooking / food channels. Such as calling it tartar sauce, for some people that may not give much meaning as the name may be different, but you mentioned the basic core ingredients and that can make the ones from elsewhere in the world click to their local version of it! I thank you so much for giving such details, they are super helpful.

There's a puffball in my front yard that is bigger than a basketball, no exaggeration. It is still perfect looking, no holes or damage. Probably way over ripe now, I ate a smaller one that was next to it a week ago. Yummy.

Absolutely in awe of being able to go outside, harvest a thing, and then just sit down and cook it. Life goals. I have a feeling the lack of breading was why my one attempt at cooking a giant puffball (that I found in my yard, no less) failed miserably. It was rubbery and slimy and horrid and really put me off trying anything similar again. D:
