I think it's awesome to hear his theory about this character, Briony. So spot on, and the last sentence "May she burn in hell" It's what Robbie would have said to her.
@sandraevans95354 жыл бұрын
It's weird for me to respond to this after 5 years but whatever.. I think Robbie wouldn't be mad at Briony at all. She was a child when she said all of that things and Robbie knows her since the day she was born so..

@@sandraevans9535 I know she was a child but up until that point Robbie had no intention to forgive her. @stvltiloqvent6 жыл бұрын
I feel like it's something he's given some thought about, definitely. You don't come up with a full blown character analysis on the spot. And that is what actors are supposed to do anyway when they prepare for a role - to explore all the ways their own character can relate to another. But James really went above and beyond!! And I love it when actors are actually well invested into their own scripts and stories they're helping bring to life on the screen. Of course, that would also require the script to be well written x)

I see Briony as having been placed at the centre of the universe, and enforcing godlike powers through her writing. As she got older, she only partially developed into acknowledging other people and how her actions effect others, namely through her 'crime.' This knowledge from the world outside of her reality was strong enough to pierce the bubble of fantasyland she always insisted upon upholding, and found a way to become immersed in her own world, yet still in relation to her ego-as it was completely revolved around her control. As she still feels the need to enact her control, (SPOILER) her providing happiness to Robbie and Cecilia can be seen as a mixture of her development and her lack thereof. Firstly, it shows her development by attempting to atone for what she stole. However, she is still self-absorbed. It's all so SHE can live, so SHE can get by; in the book at the end she speaks very much about how much she can control as 'god.' Also (SPOILER) the fact that she is developing severe Alzheimer's and will soon forget her crime and her entire life is also deserving to her, both for her development and lack of development. A reward for her development, her atonement in reality, as soon the guilt of her crime will disappear for ever and she can make up to herself all the pain she also caused herself with her guilt. Also, her getting what seems just in a way; she had been so caught up in herself and her own life for so long and now it was leaving her due to her condition. Just wanted to get that down before I forgot it all :)

The movie made Briony’s motivation less complex. In the book it wasn’t because she had a crush on him it was because she didn’t know the consequences of her actions and she saw herself and everyone around her as people in a story not as real people. In the book it is much less obvious that Robbie wasn’t the one who committed the crime. In the book, Paul and Robbie are the same height so Briony assumed Paul was Robbie due to her preconceived notion of Robbie being a sex maniac.
