He had played a lot of big roles in the past. He's also often casted in huge movies, because he's that much of a great actor. He's been in countless films too. So imho, I don't think he's actually underrated. He's not part of the mainstream actors because he chooses to live his life simply. James McAvoy is a brilliant actor. I think the best film I've ever seen him in, although it was only a voice only role was the 2004 animated film Strings. I also liked him in Starter for 10, Wanted, Gnomeo and Juliet and X-Men: Days of Future Past. I think he'd make a good Doctor Who. He was rumoured to play the 11th Doctor, when Matt Smith was officially cast. I hope one day he will be The Doctor - he will be great.
