Ironically I have a background in electrical engineering just never finished the degree back in the early 90’s. I now have a different degree in the medical field. I’ve been interested in ham radio since the late 80’s but finally got my tech in December. Passed my general just a few days ago so I’ve been watching quite a few antenna videos. Still trying to sort out shack ideas/arrangement as well as antenna location(s) wire routing. Anyway keep up the good work. Chris KE8WEI

Great unit. Good sound and video. Because I did not wish to damage the radio wiring harness I ran wires directly to the speakers, which was easy to do in an RV. All of the power connections were to the conversion batteries which are isolated from the engine battery. That also meant that I had to install a switch for the rear camera, which actually is convenient, as I can now switch on the camera at any time even when driving. Much to my surprise, when I drove my vehicle the first time after installation the turn signals did not make a clicking sound, but the signal lights and indicators in the dashboard continued to work normally. There also is no warning sound if seat belts are not fastened. However, I am not certain if these produced a warning sound before because I always fasten the belt before starting my vehicle. Apparently these sounds are generated electronically and come from the radio speakers, but now that the radio has been replaced with the ATOTO unit nothing is heard.

Thinking about the drilling part, I would have probably drilled a smaller hole (just big enough for the wire) and then cut and spliced the wire. About the glare, a tablet matte screen cover would probably take care of that.

Sure you can. You need only to remove the outer insulation and diagonally cut then twist the shielding, strip he inner wire and then treat it like any other connection. I do it all the time to change the phase of guitar pickups. You'll either find braided steel shielding or a simple drain wire under the outer insulation.@@SevenFortyOne

Sure, you can pysically do that but it's not really a good idea, especially in this application. If coax is spliced like that it creates an impedance discontinuity which can cause the signal to be weaker at the receiver and also raises the potential for noise to be coupled into the signal. You might be able to get away with this for audio signals like your guitar amp handles but a video signal like we have here will have more potential to suffer from the problems I mentioned.

@@jimirox1928 Yeah thanks for that. At first I thought, "OK" but afterwards it occurred to me that I've spliced TV coax cable. There are actually fittings designed for that purpose that keep the outer layer intact as a shield. I was afraid of doing it the way you're suggesting but if I end up doing this, I'll give it a go.

If your car has parking sensors and you install this, would the factory parking sensors still work?

I have a backup sensor in my 2007 suburban that still works. I think it's going to vary from car to car depending on how they are implemented. Id check with the car manufacturer to be sure.

Maybe I missed it, can this be tilted downward? My headunit location is high on the dash pointed upward from the factory. I’d like to have something pointed downward more level with my viewing level.

The unit has fixed mounting but you may be able to angle it depending on what you use for a mounting bracket and how much room is in your dash.

@@SevenFortyOne So I'll tell ya, on my Solara and Camry, that part has to be removed in order to reach the screws that hold the radio in place. That means it is the first to come out and the last to go in (radio has to be seated and secured and THEN this vent part snapped back in). I'm not sure if this is how it works on the Corolla, but I'd imagine Toyotas of this generation all sort of use similar dash assembly. I have a 7" S8 right now and I really want to try one of the new 9" ones because the 10 was too big and blocked my vents. The 9" version sticks up about a half inch over the border of the vent assembly, but doesn't block the vent. However, I can't see how I would get it in once the screen is installed and in the way! And if I ever change my mind and want to replace something, I don't know how I'd get the unit back out without it smacking into and probably breaking the top of the display!

Hey, loved the video. I ordered the same unit, but to my surprise in Canada we don't get the two plastic adapter plates you showed, it seems to be only for USA units. I have reached out to Atoto to see if there is any way for me to get my hands on the 9" adapter (the smaller one) but I haven't heard back yet. Was wondering if you would be willing to sell the plastic 9" adapter? I would need it shipped to Canada. I really need one of those for the factory look I am doing, and can't seem to find it for sale anywhere. Hope you see this and can help out.

I bought one of these but im getting an android error upon test fitting with the main iso plug :( not sure if its a fault or just needs a hard reset - I did manage to get it to boot up once but it went back to a black screen pretty quickly.

the only reason I came looking for this exact video, is to see how you got the unit to sit tight to dash with factory plastics and screws.....but you went from hanging out of dash to completely flush with no video....that leads me to believe it's a nightmare

No, it just bolts back in I think. I don't remember having any trouble with it. The only reason I can think of that I didn't show it was because the camera died or the footage was blocked by my arms
