New cars are expensive, and while some of the features they offer are nice to have like Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Assist, just about everyone wants Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Why not save some money and make an upgrade instead of trading in if everything else works fine?

Pro Tip: lots of old Toyotas have cruise control built in, even the base models. The difference is that they dont install the cruise buttons if you didn’t pay for the Add-on . So what you can do is just buy the cruise control sticks. I did this with my friend’s 2008 Yaris. Literally pop out the cover and screw in the stick and plug it in. The Dash already had the indicators and everything. The part is only $10 and its been working for 12 years now.

This is also true for heated seats sometimes. I have a 2008 4runner Sport that didn't come with heated seats but still had the connectors in the seat, so you could buy the OEM seat heaters for like $120 and install it yourself instead of paying much more. The base trim didn't have the connections, it was only the ones who had power seats.

My 79 celica gt had cruise control... by that I mean it had a lamp chain you clip around the throttle pedal when you go down the highway. Never used that good old cruise chain... and I'll never use one in any other car either (actually half of the cars I've owned have had cruise control, and I STILL refused to use it, my foot is more fuel efficient)

Car manufacturers approach to infotainment systems have always been mind boggling to me. Like they built and tested the car itself to perfection through months or years of R&D and millions of dollars, but then had the intern design and build the infotainment system with the pocket money he had left over from his birthday. The amount of expensive cars I've seen with dogshit quality reverse cameras or with slow as hell computers is too damn high.

Fun fact, most of Automotive OEMs DOESN'T make their own infotainment systems be it Software or Hardware. They just tell some tier 1 suppliers what they want such as specs (roughly) and a very handsome payment of money for the Tier 1 for them to go ham with it.....or just cut as much corners possible to make the units as cheap as possible.

Probably worth pointing out that the base model cars tend to be easier to upgrade with these aftermarket mods compared to upgraded vehicles. The more features the automaker puts in a car, the more integrated everything becomes. That's especially true with head units with integrated / digital climate controls, and virtually all electric vehicles.

I've personally installed head units in my vehicles since I was 15. It looks better, sounds better, gives you the option to add more tech, and (probably most important) is the perfect opportunity to spend an afternoon with friends. Doing a project like this with friends is not only easier, but it gives you an excuse to spend hours bonding & having fun. While at the same time, it isn't some physically demanding workload, that your friends will avoid. Just look at how much fun was had in this video. You all did a great job on this one!

My dad was in the same boat with his 20 year old pickup. Over a quarter a million miles on it, constant stress from tugging a trailer loaded with stuff and the boat (separately of course lol) and the cost to fix what's wrong would be far less than that of a newer truck (think it was like 60-80k for a modern model). After paying a mechanic 4k for each rebuild of his transmission (he got two due to their incompetence in "forgetting" to refill the transmission fluid the first time and sabotaging the junkyard trash they swapped on the second, after marking as a basic steel and clutch replacement) he paid about 10k for new performance drums, a rebuild kit, tools to assemble the transmission and install it... came out to 20k or so for the full cost of fixing his truck on his own... engine needs work, but transmission is basically finished. Should last another 50k miles easy (likely until the engine starts having enough problems to need to take it apart and fix).

I drove a box truck at my old job that had an add-on rearview camera wired that way. It worked, but the problem was sending power to the camera by shifting into reverse only did just that: send power to the camera and light the power button on the screen. So I would have to shift into reverse, turn on the screen, wait a second for it to boot up, and then I could back the truck up with it. And of course it died as soon as I shifted into drive, which at least on a box truck with God-awful rear visibility, I would've been happier if I could leave it on to watch for tailgaters.

The better solution to use the camera when put in reverse is to connect the positive wire direct to reverse light, the negative wire in the trunk where is an bolt to the chasis to have the ground and change the setting in the Head Unit to show in automatic when the camera sent a signal to the unit, and with this every time you put the car in the reverse the camera show automatically in the unit

Literally did this exact Sony head unit upgrade on my 2009 Honda Fit a couple months ago. The links for these do go to Crutchfield; I HIGHLY recommend going through them to get all of your needs taken care of: installation instructions specifically for your vehicle, pre-wired plug-and-play harness adapter, replacement trim pieces to fit the the head unit into your dash, the aforementioned trim tools, and more. They are absolutely fantastic at taking care of end users and give a lot of power to the people that want to pursue their own repairs/upgrades, I'll be going back to them for any other audio upgrades I want to do. That Sony head unit is REALLY great, and I love it a ton. I had never taken apart a vehicle interior before and was able to get it done in a couple hours, even with having to re-do some of it because the USB-C cable I had I fed wrong and needed to re-route it. After doing this head unit upgrade, I'm extremely hesitant to get another vehicle and want to keep this one alive as much as I possibly can, so I'm not stuck in an automaker's e-store and subscriptions and more.

Decided to try a new head unit instead and I gotta say it really went a long way to improving my time spent driving. "Demolition man" springs to my mind when it comes to all these modern hybrids and EV's. Everything they've added to the humble ICE has only taken control and ownership away from us and gave it back to them, people hear about the proposed 15 minute cities and wonder how we'd be contained and stopped from travelling wherever and whenever we want. when the computer they call a car can say no and take them where it wants i'm sure they'll realize. It's the only reason western governments are so urgent to get us all into EV's, it's near total control for them pretty much, it's not economic or sustainable, it's definitely not "greener". it's a farce they just want us in a computerized prison.

As a car audio installer for 10 years I gotta say. Thank you for going with quality equipment. That makes the job so much easier and reliable. For the backup camera you should have removed the 4 bolts inside to pop off that trim and used the factory grommet to run the wire thru. Run an extra line with your camera wire so you can give your camera 12v but also tag into the cars reverse light and tag that into the radios reverse trigger. This will allow you to view the camera when you want but will also trigger automatically when you put it in reverse. Fuse taps are directional. You want to pull the fuse and figure out which is the input and output. The wire coming out of the fuse tap is the output side. Installing a fuse tap backwards loops whatever your tapping through the primary fuse then the secondary. Also, ground out the parking break line. It bypasses the safety features that allows you to watch movies and shit via usb or DVD while driving. Pioneer and alpine require a tr1 to bypass. If any of that is impressive then look up Imeastro by datalink. You can fully integrate dash cams, your cars ECU for any data points the engine has along with reading and wiping engine codes, integration of radar detectors, and more. Possibilities depends on vehicle.

You're completely right about hiding the license plate. In Canada the only people that have access to personal details from a license plate are law enforcement and the DMV (ICBC) where we live in BC. Having somebody's license plate will do absolutely nothing for you if you're not police or a government worker. Canada went through great lengths to make sure it's like this. It's not like some states where it's a public registry.
@Rudohardt
@Rudohardt 3 ай бұрын

@youandiryan
@youandiryan 3 ай бұрын
@@Rudohardt yeah so here if you want to learn the history of a car you need to have a VIN number. And with that you can pull the Carfax.. If you want even deeper history on the car you will have to go to your DMV. In our province of BC, The DMV is ICBC and you can give them the VIN number to get an even more in-depth history on the car but you will need to provide a piece of ID and you will have to pay them, neither of these will tell you anything about the previous owners details, aside from their maintenance history. Canada has this type of stuff extremely locked down for privacy and security. Even with the police this is highly monitored. Like police officers here cannot just go and run a police check on people they know. Or the vehicles of people they know. They will get fired. It is extremely monitored even for police. It's a good system and it seems to work pretty good
@youandiryan

@@Rudohardt I left a comment explaining more and it was deleted. I have no idea why... because there was nothing in the comment that could be misconstrued as rude or that gave any personal details. I know it was not LTT. So I'm assuming that KZbin algorithm did this by mistake. So as I was saying here if you want a history report you can use the VIN number and check it with Carfax or go to the local DMV which in British Columbia is ICBC. That would give you a more thorough history. Neither of those options would tell you anything about the previous owner except that he maintained the car and it would give you the history. Canada has this stuff pretty locked down.

Do Hondas have a single main wiring harness for basically all models, to save on manufacturing costs? My Subaru had wires in the doors for tweeters not included in the lower trims, and so to upgrade to tweeters just meant buying a set and plugging them in. Also on that note, it's a shame they chopped up the factory connector in the dash, rather than buy a cheap adapter harness - because the factory subwoofers often are an inline plug setup, too.

Being a tech for one of New Zealand's more premier car audio workshops you guys did great in showing off quality products and the value inherently found in some cheaper models, but the drawbacks in that some can face premature failure. The ideal solution is to always go with first party branded options, the likes of Sony, Kenwood, JVC, Pioneer, Alpine, etc as they've been in the industry for years and work well. I would make note that some vehicles need harnesses that are much more expensive due to factory amplifiers and steering wheel controls but overall it's still a great way of getting an upgrade! Viofo dash cams are awesome, reliable and extremely well featured. There's a more premium experience in BlackVue for the app but overall the price of Viofo dash cams makes them far better if you're more tech inclined, the hardwire kit is essentially a no brainer to ensure that it records regardless of whether the vehicle is on or off. Overall thanks for showing off the DIY aspect and the value of replacing a head unit in a vehicle that has no reason in being upgraded if you don't need to! PS: all of your wishlist is doable Plouffe 😉

@@littlejack59 yeah man totally doable, the likes of Kenwood head units will actually have multiple camera inputs you can use for this exact purpose. I have one on my own car as I installed a splitter and don't want to break it on parking stops in lots. Unfortunately model numbers for head units can be difficult as they change depending on what region you're in, but it's certainly doable that way and can even be done with a relay and a single camera input like the AX6000 shown in this video

Don't be afraid to experiment with backup cameras. The one I got on a whim because it was cheap on amazon turned out to be the best camera I've actually seen! I paid £17/$25 and I would happily spend double if not triple knowing the quality. Unfortunately it's really hard to find them now as I think the company went under/started trading on a different platform or name etc. I had a "Pomile" camera and it was excellent. I put the same exact camera in multiple cars since April 2021. 100% recommend if you can find one!

we stopped buying cars some time ago. We go for the 3 year lease/hire, with Toyota - we had an Aygo mini car first, then we are on our 4th Yaris - the latest being a hybrid. ~£230 / month and we give it back every 3 years. No MOT. The hybrid is great to drive. Plus, don't have to worry about battery disposal.

And seeing upgrades being done through the perspective of just updating an old daily driver to be a better daily, rather than another 1000hp civic build is a breath of fresh air. Careful on the LED lights, some housings are not designed for it and is illegal to use. This is due to how it projects/reflects the light or because the lumens or color temperature is too high possibly damaging the retinas and definitely causing temporary night blindness for oncoming drivers. This issue is not just limited to aftermarket lights and has been the cause of pedestrians getting injured or worse, animal strikes, head on collisions, and t-bone collisions.

Yep, my 2010 F-350 I bought at an auction for cheap needed a couple grand in mechanical work, but after that, I upgraded the multimedia to a new Kenwood double din deck, put in a HD reverse camera, took out the useless cigarette lighter to put in a USB slot for the multimedia and command start. It's been my reliable daily driver for personal use and work. Doing those small upgrades to bring some modern useful tech really put into perspective that I didn't need to spend $50k-$80k on a new truck when for less than a fraction of that with some minor upgrades, got me what I "actually needed."

I drive a 1995 Jeep Cherokee and I felt very similar about how making upgrades to an older car ends up seeming better. It's the best way to cater the experience exactly how you would like it. Also side note I would route the wires properly ASAP because if you get too used to seeing them you will not want to put the effort in to hide them. Maybe yall have a little more motivation than me but its been at least 5 years since I replaced my cars audio and I still haven't gotten around to hiding the wires.

Great topic for a video! I'm quite supportive of this trend since it can make older cars feel so much more modern. But be aware that it's not always perfect! Some units may have a relatively long boottime that can feel awkward, some units may have annoying bloatware, and some units may have odd issues/limitations. Something we see happening here when switching the orientation of the rear view camera doesn't really work :( This is also the reason why I hope to see this community grow. There are some decent forums (like XDA Forums) where people post their issues and others may be able to find a solution/workaround, but these definitely could use some more enthousiasts! Overall I still enjoy my upgrades, but I hope this market grows and improves in the future!

I completely agree with this! I wanted to comment to share my experience. 2 years ago I bought a Pioneer 2600NEX. It’s amazing and I have no problems with it. The boot time as you mentioned can be slow. Sometimes I can listen to my music while connected to Apple CarPlay within 15 seconds of the car being turned on. Sometimes it will take longer. I have also done a subwoofer upgrade to my car and the pioneer headunit is amazing at EQ and turning the sub off and on. I’ve have the headunit for over 35K miles.

I did a similar upgrade to my car recently. Manufacturer offers a sat nav package for my car for £400 but does not support android auto. I got a android auto box for £120. My car already came with a decent display so it ended up real cheap, connected to my steering wheel controls and entire thing fit behind original radio with no visible changes to the dash. Would recommend.

Just a heads up for all those attempting automotive wiring, its best practice to use crimp connectors (with proper crimping tools - NOT just mashing it with a pair of pliers) instead of soldering. Your solders might be fine but a proper crimp will be more reliable and outlast them every time :)

@@danemowris39 It depends on the car but you can find Dash kits for the more integrated infotainment systems if you want to get an aftermarket Head unit. but you could be restricted on the actual head unit size since ford uses a separate screen and processing module in the sync systems. I drive a 6th gen mustang and my options are all expensive since the dash kit has to replicate the start button and chassis controls, HVAC and then the spot for the Head unit. If space is tight Pioneer recently introduced a modular system on a few models that allows for remote screen if the space tight That said if you have the base screen it is probable you could upgrade to the 8 inch MyFordTouch or Sync 3 systems but the conversions are pretty involved. often requiring reprogramming of modules.
