It was still worth it. The reality is that he had a long-term hip issue. If he hadn't pushed himself hard at that time, he would simply have done the damage to the hip a bit later on but it would still have happened anyway.

This run to number one from Madrid on was insane. Thirteen tournaments (ten considered big), nine wins, three times runner up, and a quarter final. Had he won the US Open that year it would be considered up there with some of the very best years ever. Makes you realise that without the Big Three (or at least two of them) Murray was probably worth double figures of majors, but he wouldn't be as great of a player.

The match against Novak at the World Tour Final in 2016 was the first time in years Murray was the favorite before it started. Any other time playing against the big 3 he was the underdog. 2016 was truly his year, beating everyone through and through

Andy is my tennis idol and it will be the case forever. Thanks so much for posting this, very good memories during that year. His season was actually insane. Prime Murray was definitely out of this world. Children nowadays will never understand how good Andy was physically and mentally for so many tournaments in a row with more than 25 wins in a row. This was the real good time, I miss it so much. Now seeing Andy compete is enough to make me happy, but sad to see a champion like him finishing like this with injuries which really avoided him to win even more GC in a time he would have really had the possibility to do so.

Ppl say this push cut his career short but it was worth it. Had he played one or two fewer tournaments this year he might never get to be No.1 ever. Sure he might sustain his high level a bit longer and win 1 or 2 more slams, but with Fed and Rafa coming back in 2017 all the way to 2019 Andy will forever be No3/ No4 in rankings. There are only 20ish players in the history of the game to be crowned YE1. Andy was one of them, and for that he will forever be a legend.

One of the things people don't understand about the big 4 is that Murray and Djokovic should have dominated from 2015 onwards as Nadal and Federer got older and Nadal had the injuries. But Murray was wiped out from the beginning of 2017 onwards so Djokovic cleaned up and Nadal did remarkably well to come back from tough injuries to win more than expected. Had Murray not had such a bad injury you'd expect him to have won many more grand slams as he was so much better than the rest (barring big 3) at the end of 2016. Think he'd have ended on 7/8 which would give the big 4 argument a bit more weight

It just shows you how hard it is because Andy appeared in 3 slam finals in succession, winning one, won all those tournaments, yet if he had lost to Novak at the end he still wouldn’t have been No.1. He was truthfully the only one out outside of Roger, Novak and Rafa to keep them honest and have success against them.

He was constantly pushing through fatigue to get to that number 1 spot and got there. But is that metal hip a consequence of pushing those barriers too much or a just legacy of the price he was willing to risk to be world number 1? No matter what you say, those weeks at number 1 can't be taken away from him

I mean It's just a fact. Murray was kinda lucky that Nole was a bit demotivated and already having elbow pain in the last six months of 2016. Anyway numbers don't lie, Murray was number 1 for 40 weeks and 3 time slam champion during the Big3 alien era! This is the best a human like Murray can get

Andy deservedly was part of the big four for so many years. Frankly, if it wasn't for his hip, I'd imagine him taking quite a few grandslams off Novak-Rafa-Roger during the 2017-2022 period - but unfortunately, that's not the way history works.

For a guy that follows tennis since yesterday, yes. But someone that has watched it for more than a couple of years knows that the "Fab Four" moniker was created to name those four players that for years and years were at the top of the rankings and were at least in the QF of every single big event. The Fab Four existed even when Novak had 1 Slam and Roger and Rafa were on another planet compared to him. Victories were never the factor for such a nickname. So no offense, buddy, but you need to know a bit of history before talking trash about a player.

While murray was never on the same level as the big 4 (length wise and absolute domination). He did something no one ever did. He played at the same level as them for multiple years. He was in the top 4 pretty consistently for over 6 years. Wawrinka never got that good and dude won 3 grand slams in the big three era.

you dont need to be an andy fanboy to recognise what andy was able to achieve. just because the big three were able to accomplish more on a quantifiable standpoint, andy was still able to tussle with the big 3 at a consistent level and give any player trouble for many years. thats why its the fab four.
