The little puppy has finally grown up and showed that he can become the next number one that many consider him to be. Zverev now has 10 titles and the German has won three masters event as the biggest win before this final. A perfectly accomplished match where the first win was critical, because if you're going to defeat "the mean machine" then it's almost a must to win first set. The young German was confident and belived in himself from the start. Sasha played quite right from the bass line with many deep and well-placed strokes that allowed Novak to taste a little of is own medicine and Sasha won most of the long rallies. Sasha's serving and perhaps the most important thing, the German kept his nerves in check and did not get nervous. Its very rare to beat both Roger and Novak in the same event. Novak Djokovic is still the best player in the world right now and I see him as the main favorite in three of four GS next year. Sasha still has a lot to prove in the GS context, where he always choke down when it comes to playing five sets. This tennis year have been fantastic and unpredictible with many ups and down for the big three and we saw some new fresh talents like Tsitsipas,Coric,Kachanov and Medvedev rise in to the top 20. Also good comeback year after injuries for Delpo and Nishikori. The biggest disappointment this years was as usual Dimitrov,Goffin and Sock. Wishing for the best next year my tennis loving friends around the world. Peace and love to everybody.

The only way tah he become into N°1 will be because the big 4 are too "old" for him, that's the only way for "next gen".statistically, zverev had the best odds, it is only statistics,not quality. He -Zverev and the others next gen" just only have to wait to the retairment of the big 4,because they -"next gen"- are only "millennials"... This match for Zverev, is really his biggest triumph, but it means nothing if he cannot maintain it in 2019... Meanwhile, for the big 4 (specially Dijiokovic, Federer and Nadal) it was only "a one more year""..."a normal and an expected year" Yeah, I liked Zverev's play, it was amaizing, but, he yas the lucky that the others are relatively "old"... That's all... In other words, the next gen will be the best, only and only because of the retirement of the big four...(millennials...what else can I expect frok them...) Zverev defateed Dijokovic and Federer only because of the statistics... There were too fabulous year for Djiokovoc and Federer....statistics...that's all...

@@sebastianlucero4571 that's a load of shit, there's plenty of players in between Sascha and the big 3 in age who could be in his position, poised to be number 1 after the big 3 fall of. But they aren't, and he is. He's the best young player since Del Potro showed up on tour.

This goes to show that despite likelyness of some players to win finals, no player is "unbeatable". Any player at any point in time can win or lose especially in finals. Never underestimate any player ever. This goes to Nole fans, Rafa fans, Federer fans. Respect all players alike. 100% deserved win for Zverev, he completely outplayed a very healthy and competitive Djokovic in the important moments of the match. Hopefully this catapults him into achieving beter results at GS. And props to him for his ceremony speech. Zverev certainly gained a lot more fans after that.

Except for Cilic, feel free to underestimate him whenever. One thing is certain, he's always in top 10, but when it comes to big matches, he always loses. Except that 1 US open while Ivanisevic was coaching him, provided him some balls. - frustrated Croat
@Giftick1
@Giftick1 5 жыл бұрын
@@jamesevans2507: Djokovic played bad because Zverev had a clear strategy after the loss in the group round. He played each ball in the middle of the court, this way it was not possible for Djokovic to play the angles which he usually does. He was not able to put pressure on these mid-court balls. Zverev had a perfect match plan against him. This way it looked like Djokovic played bad, but he wasn't. Usually players try to hit the ball hard into the corners to put the opponent under pressure but these are the situations were Djokovic scores. And against Zverev he didn't have these opportunities.
@jamesevans2507
@jamesevans2507 5 жыл бұрын
that's the dumbest thing I've ever read. Djokovic played abyssmally for whatever reason. You could tell from the fact that he got in like 60% first serves or whatever when it was like 80% for the rest of the tournament. Was that also Zverev casting voodoo to make him miss those serves? 31 service points in a row vs a strong Cilic. Prime Nadal and Federer couldn't stop him when he was at his best and prime Djokovic definitely can't be stopped by some Russian German kid who caught a lucky break. See you at Australian Open.

Congrats to Sascha Zverev! IMO this was more impressive than Khachanov's Paris victory, as he completely outplayed Djokovic at his own game. The key to his victory as the commentators were pointing out, were not only his Isner like serve statistics, but he out-dueled Djokovic on his holy grail-- the backhand to backhand exchange from the baseline, consistently throughout the match. Novak usually elicits an error from the opponent during such exchanges, but Sascha was relentless and this put Nole in the backseat immediately. Was Djokovic not his best? Possibly. But i feel even a fit Djokovic would have struggled with the immaculate consistency tempered with brute power, displayed by Zevrev today.
@Zeus-ei1ik
@Zeus-ei1ik 5 жыл бұрын
Finally an objective analysis of the match. Yes Djokovic did struggle with movement in the second set and had the sniffles, but Sascha was exhausted too. Fact is, Nole was thoroughly outplayed at his own game. There's two ways to beat a peak and primed Novak, either out-hit him from the baseline ala Nadal/Zevrev or the high risk approach of taking time away and pummeling winners outright through the match ala Wawrinka and Fed (FO 2011 SF, comes to mind). Both these approaches are virtually impossible to consistently sustain over a season, that's how good a peak Novak is. I'm still skeptical about Zevrev mentality and physical stamina over 5 sets. Once he wins multiple GS, then we can say he's finally arrived. Remember Grigor Dimitrov won this even last year and then faded completely.
@plutus2243
@plutus2243 5 жыл бұрын
Zeus: Nadal at his peak (08-13) could consistently challenge a peak Novak from the baseline, over 5 sets. Yes, Fed/Wawrinka's go for broke, ultra-aggressive approach works... when both of them are in the zone, it cannot be replicated every match.
@Zeus-ei1ik
@Zeus-ei1ik 5 жыл бұрын
Plutus agree. Nadal at his peak was an absolute beast. He's slowed down quite a bit and his shots lack the same depth and venom that it previously had. Will wait for more results from Zevrev before making a judgement, but as of now only a peak Nadal could take on Djokovic over 5 sets, hoping to outhit him from the baseline.

I still think he needs a lot of fitness work before we talk a slam but that net play against Nole was tier 1 world class volleying. Good for him. Classy talented kid. don't use players as means of justification. federer is just very old for a tennis player that is capable to top the rankings, you mean just because he plays good at 37 people like Nadal or Djokovic aren't old at 32 years of age? That's like saying Zverev isn't young because Nadal was a prodigy at 17.

I just don't understand people sometimes. What is the most important thing for you after all? To know who the fucking "GOAT" is? Or, and that's what i think it should be, to witness incredibly tough matches with incredibly skilled players playing their best tennis no matter who they are? This first set was absolutely insane. I don't remember the last time i've seen rallies with so many shots in it ! The mental fight between the players was so intense ! The tension was so high i felt nervous ! 'Cause it was impossible to know who's gonna win ! I just lived one of the most enjoyable moments of my year as a tennis fan ! I think we should just appreciate those moments a bit more sometimes and not think about that stupid ranking because that's not the most important thing and that's not what tennis is.

In the end people only remember champions and legends of sport, nobody remembers players that don't win anything, when you're a great player you'll get more fans like Federer, Djokovic and Nadal, people appreciate and respect greatness above all

Another final loss for Novak Djokovic, where he is the favorite to win in less than 3 weeks in Paris last time against Kachanov and now against Zverev as well. I have never seen Alexander Zverev make a better match (especially a better first set) in that first set, Zverev was completely unscrupulous and served amazingly 88% first services, and then even the world's best serve returner have no answers to such a monster of serving. In the second set (totally expected, because it is impossible to serve 88% first services throughout the match) Zverev's monstrous first serves dropped down a little. And then in that way Novak broke him once, but Zverev broke Novak's serve twice in that second set (3 times in the whole match) and in that way, the young talented German won very fair his biggest title. To be honest people this is actually no monstrous surprise, because all of us tennis connoisseurs know what capacity Zverev has. And we have more or less expected (at least I have) his big breakthrough on the atp tour. And it’s not actually like he has never won a big title before because he of course has (he has won 3 masters titles before) but undoubtedly this title is the biggest title he has won so far in his young career. It's doubtless that Alexander Zverev is a future world number one (have said this already 1 year ago) and a future grandslam winner as well. I mean the guy has got it all, backhand, forhand, serving you name it. The only thing he should be better at and work on is his motion schedule on the court (because sometimes he tends to get a bit well passive in his matches) and he is not the world's fastest tennis player either, and that’s really not the best way that will help him to win tennis matches or big titles at least. Anyway I have never seen anyone, only Nadal sometimes (especially on clay) who challenged Djokovic from the baseline (Novak Djokovic chases and drains down everyone from the baseline) but not Zverev in this final. Alexander Zverev gave Novak Djokovic the same medicine as the super Serbian is so terrific good himself to give everyone else. And it is to grind down his opponents from the baseline, but in this final it was the super Serbian who tasted his own medicine by Alexander Zverev. A very valuable winner and huge congratulations to Alexander Zverev in his biggest title so far in his carrer and hardly his last either. This is really no monstrous surprise to be quite honest because we all know Zverev’s enormous potential. OVER AND OUT.

You couldn't have said that better. But, Zverev actually broke Novak's serve four times during today's final. Once in the first set, and three times in the second (There were three consecutive breaks right on the start of the second set)

It was three times. One the first set, then Sascha broke Nole in the opening game of the second set, but then Nole broke back, leveling the game at 1-1. Then those two breaks came in

I'm a Wawrinka fan so just note that my following comment is not in favor of either player. Whilst i congratulate Zverev for the greatest win of his career so far, i do not believe we should be in total shock. I say this in the sense that after his win against Novak, people are saying that he will be a future Grand Slam champion, but didn't we already know that? He already beat Novak in the finals of Rome 2017 and beat Federer in the finals of Toronto 2017 so we already know that he can beat these players at ATP finals. I feel like his win over Novak at the ATP finals doesn't particularly mean much in terms of how close he is to winning a slam since in any other tournament of the season (especially a slam), you don't get a second chance against a player. A second chance would obviously favor the loser of the first round since they have more to learn. Whilst Zverev is undoubtedly the leader of the next gen, i still believe we are no closer to knowing when Zverev will take his place on the Grand Slam stage. I still believe there is a massive hurdle to be climbed for the next gen when facing any member of the big 3 on the big stage.

The new HEAD balls they used and the slower court made the ATP Finals a weird one this year. I think many players found it difficult to adjust to, judging by their unforced error stats. I personally like tennis with speed, especially when they crush the balls and hit explosive winners. Hoping it won't be like this next year.

As a big avid Nole fan I hate to see him losing and to be honest I could barely recognize him on the court today. But I am not NOT happy for Sasha. He deservingly won the title and I want to congratulate him for an amazing tournament and end of the year. As for Novak, he has already done what was unimagenable in the first part of the year, he won 2 slams, he finally won that elusive Cinci title and became the first man in open era to hold all 9 masters title at least once. I couldnt be more proud of his achievements. Take a goooood rest champ and see you next year. I have no doubts you will pick up where you left off. Big congrats to both once again. We, Nole fam love you unconditianally.
