My girlfriend and I flew on an ATR 42 with American Eagle in 1992. We noticed that it was somewhat less noisier inside the cabin than most turboprop airliners. My girlfriend gave the ATR the nickname, "The Whisperprop"! I figure that the ATR 42 had thicker cabin insulation to muffle the bass hum that's produced inflight by the props. It's my understanding that most of the public complains that most turboprop airliners are noisy and bumpy. I've heard some refer to a turboprop airliner as a "School Bus With Wings" because most are bumpy and noisy. I see in this video that this particular ATR has six bladed props. The 42 that my girlfriend and I flew on had four bladed props. Some say that driving a vehicle with a manual transmission is "Real Driving"! I say that flying in a propeller driven airliner is "Real Flying"! I like the sound that the props make, the "Box Fan" sound in high idle and taxiing, and the "Bumblebee" sound in takeoff and inflgight. It's also my understanding that a Boeing 737 or Airbus A-320, with four turboprop engines with six bladed props, would use 40 percent less jet fuel than with the two big pure jet engines. Think of all of the jet fuel that airlines could save by going to predomanantly turboprop airliners on most domestic flights, and only using pure jet aircraft for cross country and overseas.

Why are people so afraid of the prop blades? Turbofans and turbojets have blades too. And although the casing is supposed to contain the blades in an event of a blade failure, there have been cases of uncontained blade failures, and at least one of those has caused fatalities when the blade penetrated the fuselage and embedded itself in the opposite engine.

was that shown the real blades angle of attack setting? why were they set like that during the run? wouldnt that setting make them stall? (too hight AOA)
@Mountain_Yeti7 жыл бұрын
khalilovH Depends on the engine and prop but yes, you typically feather in on start up. I wondered this as well. I doubt they'd stall but I'm sure it puts a hell of a lot of unneeded stress on the turbines.
@slo13836 жыл бұрын
As with many/most modern turboprops, the PW100 series are 'free turbines' meaning there is no mechanical link between the compressor turbine and the power turbine (the one that turns the propeller). Therefore the compressor turbine is not influenced by the position of the blades at all. The old story is, you could hold onto the propeller as the engine starts and it wouldn't turn - actually the ATRs have a 'hotel' mode that uses a propeller brake to do just that (uses it as a clever alternative to having an APU).

This seat would make me a little bit nervous, in a jet engine the fan is mantled with kevlar but when one of these propeller blades comes loose.... phew :D

why do they pitch the blades flat during a taxi or stop?
@nguyentuan199010 жыл бұрын
i guess the amount of thrust depends on angle of attack of the blades? so at stop or taxi, you dont need as much thrust as while taking off or during lfight?
@AccessAir9 жыл бұрын
Derek Wall Beta pitch for flat pitch allows the props to act as a break by becoming a large spinning disc. It cuts down on brake wear and tear.

Hate those damn things. Worst flight I ever had was on one from Memphis to Nashville. They didn't turn on the A/C until we were airborne (it was middle of summer and 110 degrees in the cabin). Hate those skinny little supercritical wings. The icing problems (and subsequent crashes) with these planes are notorious. And that is one seat I'd never take, right opposite the props. Spit a blade and it's adios muchachos....

I live in NZ and our national airline (Air New Zealand) operates the ATR-72 500/600 and there has never been any accidents to date. I would rather fly on these than the Bombardier Q400, which I also have flown on from Vancouver to Seattle and the ATR is a far more comfortable and safer plane to be in.
@WillLMC968 жыл бұрын
I love most aircraft and aviation in general, but the ATR's freak me out. Wouldn't trust it in inclement weather.
@boffis1237 жыл бұрын
Ive flown them many times in Finland where this video is aswell. I remember one flight from 2013 where we flew in clouds the entire flight and during landing at Vaasa it was one h*ll of a snowstorm. But I still like ATR. I trust them a bit more than Fokker 50s and Dash-8s.

If the prop blade penetrates the passenger cabin as some have but, its very rare, depending on the hole, it could be catastrophic or nothing at all.

But this type of aircraft ... I do not think it necessary to have the safety like Airbus or Boeing ... Recently, an ATI collapsed in our country ... 66 passengers disappear ...
