Just returned from my post ablation appointment. I had the ablation on Nov 30, 2010, and was just given the all clear by Dr Hao. The way he describes the symptoms and the procedure were exactly my experience. Having this video made me much more comfortable and prepared. I'm now fully recovered!

Dr. Hao did 2 ablation procedures for me almost 3 years ago and so far so good. It has been great not having to worry about irregular heart beats and cardio-versions. I can travel now without being concerned - I got my life back.

Hi, I understand the objective of ablation is to eliminate AF. Once this is done, can we resume normal physical activities, like running (Marathon run)? Thank you

FYI: My father had RF ablation in '06, ( not in a CPMC facility, though.). He was told a laser w/b used, but after he was mildly sedated, they made him sign waiver stating RF emitter w/b used (???). The MAZE procedure was of no benefit and post op. complications were severe. Cardiologist later revealed that NONE of his other Afib patients showed any marked post-op. improvement. w. RF MAZE. I recommend you research FDA outcomes for your age group before electing to have this done to you.

Everything I've read indicates a high success long term with MAZE, 2006 was a LONG time ago and all techniques and procedures have greatly improved. Some people dont respond to certain things well, but they, like people fatally allergic to peanut butter are a very small percentage. MAZE is basically the same as ablation- it accomplishes the same thing but done from the outside of the heart instead of inside thru a leg vein. Ablation is what someone NOT needing open heart surgery would get, wheres as if you need a valve replaced like I do- MAZE can be done during the surgery since the chest is already open. www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/maze-procedure/pyc-20384973 The maze procedure is the surgical ablation approach with the greatest long-term success in treating atrial fibrillation. The maze procedure includes creation of lines of conduction block (scar tissue) that block the abnormal impulses that cause atrial fibrillation, enabling restoration of normal sinus rhythm. Surgical maze procedures have a high success rate, with from 70% to 95% of people being free of atrial fibrillation long term after the procedure.
