Atrioc you are so right about board games. I’m in a board game club at my college and half the time people try explain the rules I have no clue what’s going on, I just have to figure it out as we go. I definitely agree you need to give a basic overview and goal instead of just jumping into a specific mechanic that learners have no clue how it connects to anything or why it matters. I guess board game teaching isn’t something you take lessons in and people just don’t talk about much, they should though.
@mistertadakichi2 жыл бұрын
13:00 applies to Magic: the Gathering as well. The people I’ve successfully taught to play were the ones I spoonfed with basic rules first and added little bits of rules at a time. Meanwhile my friends are hanging over my shoulder like “you gotta explain priority and the stack immediately” 🤦🏻♂️

1:07 I managed a gas station for 6 years - while there's no reason to be scared to come see us, you would absolutely be wasting your time if you did lol. For 90% of errors, we have to go to the breaker and turn off/on the electricity at that pump to fix it, so you'll just be sitting there for like 5 minutes at least while it reboots. So yeah, just go to another pump. Our registers also let us know when a pump has an error like this typically, we were probably just too busy to go out and bag it (sorry), but if you do come in you could just quickly let us know and we might be like "oh shoot yeah, we forgot to bag pumps 9 and 10, thanks".
@BacchusGames2 жыл бұрын
on the topic of teaching new board games, I've found that the best strategy to getting someone into board games is to start with really simple games, then only teach them games that have some mechanic they've already learned. It allows them to have some amount of comfort knowing "oh this hidden traitor mechanic is just like in mafia!" or something of that sort. Foundational learning is the key to comfort, and makes people want to learn games because "oh this is another worker placement, I loved that mechanic in Lords of Waterdeep."

Re: Board Games I teach board games for my job right now, and you're absolutely right. There is certainly a problem from both teachers and learners. There is so much subtlety in figuring out how to teach a specific game to a specific group. A lot of people who are deep in the hobby will scoff at new players relating everything to Catan or Monopoly. Even though they are just looking for a similarity or a way into the hobby. A lot of gatekeeping happens, and it is a shame, because board games are getting better every year.

Yeah, I love board games... but hate learning new ones. My family was pretty big into board games while I was growing up. Trying to learn the rules all together just never worked out. Everyone had different learning speeds. So instead we'd pick a day to play a new game and print out extra copies of the rules and have everyone prep the day of or the day before. Personally I'd just spend like 15-30 minutes before we started because I'm a speed reader and have a natural talent for anything strategy related. Made the entire process a lot better.
