Good questions from those students overall. Some journalists could learn a thing or two from them.

All those lives lost and for an internal settlement. Stormont is back. There was no British withdrawal . Sectarianism has become ingrained in society throughout the North . The peace walls in Belfast have been extended and fortified even further post the Good Friday Agreement.

Very interesting watch. I note his point 16 mins into the video were he says Armed Struggle can only become redundant when the British government leaves and partition is ended. Well I am a protestant and even I can see that none of that has happened. So does armed Struggle still trump his part in signing the Good Friday Agreement? It seems from this it does.

you are right, but both sides moved significantly from their traditional positions in order to stop people killing each other, create a far more equal society, and provide a way for the people to decide their own destiny wrt to a united ireland/british withdrawal.

The Catholic birthrate will see to a United Ireland , it could be a decade or so away and with Brexit has helped but at least will happen by purely peaceful means something that would never happen with Armed conflict. Gerry Adams very clever and he is always one step ahead in his thinking.

Great questions.Gerry Adams must have realised that waging war on your own community was never going to result in a united Ireland.
@TimoDyer11 күн бұрын
Gerry Adams was way ahead of his time. By 2050 there will be a united Ireland. The UK and GB will also be very different. England no longer rules. The population of England is no longer white, church of England. The British Isles will be part of a European nation family, trading block and community. Ireland will be a state in the EU.

One of the key flaws in those who deride the Good Friday agreement is that Adams saw the the road to a Unified Ireland could be achieved through different means and that was where it is heading..I do think the armed struggle was wrong though in the 1970s and 1980s as different methods existed to achieve its goals (unlike in the early 20th century struggle)..
@dz-px4ff24 күн бұрын
Well you do know why the armed struggle began in the first place don't you? It was the last resort? That's wrong?
@kailashpatel170623 күн бұрын
@dz-px4ff Yes..yet I think they should have seen that the dynamics could never carry them to total success esp with the broad majority of Unionist support in the North and Middle class Catholic backing lacking..They should have seen that a more nuanced approach was needed..
@dz-px4ff23 күн бұрын
@@kailashpatel1706 well some will say they could have achieved their goals in the '70s some will not. I assume you think not, if so we both sit on opposite sides of the fence. However by the '80s I feel it is the correct assumption that the armed struggle was not going to achieve their objective. That being said, in reply to your original comment, have you heard of the Sunningdale agreement?

@johnnotrealname8168think it would be fair to say they wouldn't want it at the hands of sf. Unlike up north people in the south aren't blinded by the shinners peace process lights. @@dz-px4ff The most radical parties on the left lost seats. Everywhere else there were gains seat-wise. The shinners lost votes percentage-wise too although seat-changes were minimal (Although there was an expansion of seats as well so this is somewhat skewed.).
