29:00 the reason why the bridge is like that is because the deeper part of the Columbia River is on the Oregon side and is used to get ships from the ocean to the port in Portland Oregon

Nikita N and Squirrel. The bridge is so close to the Oregon side because the river is much deeper than the Washington side, during low tide you can actually see land on the Washington side.

I've done 101 north bound from LA to Seattle in a rental Buick. Took us 2 weeks! It's a lot of things to look at along this way as a tourist. Edit: You have a lot of sandbanks in these rivers and the current make it deeper on inside. Better to have the high bridge where big ships will go! :)

Back in my motorcycling days, some friends and I would go down from BC, catch the ferry to Port Angeles, and take the 101 all the way down to California. That's one nice ride. I think you'll find that it's wetter closer to the coast, and drier the more inland you go. The temps and dryness are very similar north and south. They change more east and west. So BC, Washington, and Oregon are very similar. There was talk a few years ago of them all getting together to become something called Cascadia. Somehow I doubt that could ever happen.

Once again, the US has tons of roundabouts. I just found this stat on Google: "There are over 5,000 modern roundabouts in the US(equivalent to the UK continental roundabout), as well as many rotaries/traffic circles and neighborhood traffic circles. " Now if you want to talk about how we drive on them that's another question. LOL Love your videos.

As already posted, the bridge you crossed over from Washington State into Oregon is pretty much spot on to the real bridge. On the Washington side, what is not show in textures is historic Fort Columbia. Very nice place to go and see. It was used back in it's day to guard the mouth of the Columbia River as a coastal defense site. Went there once while living in Oregon. Love watching your Video's.

The Astoria-Megler bridge is like that because of all the sandbars on the Washington side and in the middle of the Columbia (it’s at the mouth where the river meets the ocean). The only place for ships to get through is on the Oregon side, hence the steep grade in a “weird spot.”

Just a side note Olympic National Forest is actually a rain forest, just a bit of trivia. The Interstate Bridge that crosses from Oregon to Washington along Interstae 5 is also a lift bridge Actually the Astoria Bridge was designed to allow sea traffic to get to the various inland ports such as Portland, and not have to force traffic to halt due to numerous bridge lifts. There is another bridge that crosses at Longview Washington that is nearly as tall.
@kindnessark80645 жыл бұрын
18:45 the draw bridges would have been built at different times. The draw bridge you went over looked like an more older design bridge. You can also tell it would of been built first because that side of the road had more original buildings on the highway. The raising bridge on the left is a more modern 1980's and 1990's design which means the road was made wider into the highway around the 90's and they constructed the raising bridge on the other side.
@BalooUriza5 жыл бұрын
29:27: Wow, the Astoria-Megler Bridge looks *bizarre* in the game. The low spot goes on for literally miles (I believe on a rock jetty, I know waves crash over it in bad storms when I've been stuck in traffic on it) in reality before the last section's about a mile-ish long on the Oregon side.

So the Olympic National forest is all Old Growth forest for the most part so 100 or more years old with a lot of Cedar trees. There are some spots where Logging has happened but not in the last 50 or so years. It is also a Temperate Rainforest so tree growth doesn't get affected as much as some other areas in the PNW by natural disasters (such as Wildfires). This allows the trees to get as tall as they want not quite as tall as the Sequoias but 25+ meters tall. The Cascade Mountain range the Mountains you go over with Highway 2, 20 and Interstate 90 (plus one other that goes past Mt. Ranier/St. Helens in the DLC) were heavily logged before the National forest program was instituted (with no provisions for replanting until the 60s) and most trees are between 20 to 60 years old in and around these highways. Lots of forest roads and logging roads that spurt off these since this was the main forest land that provided building materials for Seattle, Tacoma and Eastern Washington.

The US coastal roads are really damn long and really scenic. On the east coast we have US-1 that goes from Key West, Florida, to Fort Kent, Maine (on the US/Canada border). I've driven (IRL) on that road many times around North Carolina and Virginia, and another part from New York, through Boston, through the rest of New England and up to New Brunswick, Canada. Great road. Btw the longest single road in the USA is I-90, it goes from Boston to Seattle along the northern USA parralel to the Canadian border Edit: 33:03 nearly all driver's education courses teaches us about rotaries (roudabouts) lol, but I do think its commonality depends on the state. In northeast USA where I live they seem more common than the rest of the USA Edit 2: Just checked, apparently my state (NH) ranks among the bottom in rotary users lmao, they're probably just concentrated into my county and thats it.
