I'm impressed with the audio quality there is with this presentation; especially so seeing that brick wall in the background. Seeing such a hard-wall, one could assume the audio would sound akin to being in a shower-stall; but not so with this production. Here in the US, there are many on-camera news talents doing their presentations from their homes/apartments because of the concerns from the COVID-19 Pandemic; where the audio with some I've seen/heard sounding atrocious; yet, they are well-paid TV professionals that are unable to make their TV audio sound as good as what Tyler has done here.

The SiliconDust HDHomeRun 4K tuners DO support standalone DVR/PVR setups on PCs. I'm using one now with NextPVR and SiliconDust's BDA driver software on a HTPC. Once you plug the tuner into your network and install the BDA driver on your PC, the tuner appears just like any other USB TV tuner using the BDA driver standard even though it isn't physically plugged into a USB port. Really neat stuff. With NextPVR recordings, you will be lacking audio on any of the ATSC3.0 channels as NextPVR doesn't yet support AC-4 audio playback. But this isn't a problem because I use NextPVR to record these stations and then use an AC-4 audio enabled version of ffmpeg to transcode the videos to use AC-3 audio during playback. For folks who want to use ffmpeg for playback or transcoding of ATSC3.0 streams, here's a link to the AC-4 audio enabled version that I built a few days ago. www.dropbox.com/s/4n99mhmnornbh1h/ffmpeg-ac4-msys2-static.zip?dl=1 Many thanks to Paul B. Mahol for adding the AC-4 decoding to ffmpeg. The archive contains 64-bit binaries so they will only work on 64-bit editions of Windows. For folks who want to run 32 bit binaries or to run ffmpeg on Linux, the source code for this AC-4 audio enabled version of ffmpeg can be found here: github.com/richardpl/FFmpeg/tree/ac4

I have been watching your channel for tips on antennas and hardware. My DIY antenna picks up most channels from Orlando and Tampa, FL. I have recently lost the video portion of Ch. 18.2. I contacted the station and they told me this was due to an "upgrade" of the signal. They added a sub channel (2.3) but my older TV's would not get the video on 18,2. I had purchased the TV tuner box you recommended and I do receive the video from 18.2 on that device. Do you have any updated recommendations on external tuner devices?

I got one of the HD Homerun tuners and connected it to my 8-element flat-panel deep-fringe UHF antenna w/pre-amp. I realize that I am in deep fringe territory here in western Oklahoma, 78 miles from the transmitters in Oklahoma City, but I am getting a really reliable, solid signal from a few stations, while some are only receivable on rare occasion, which is to be expected. As far as ASTC 3.0 goes, one of the stations down there is broadcasting all of the ATSC 3 feeds that are available from the other stations on channel 19. I can only receive this transmission on occasion, only when the atmosphere and conditions are just right, so any reception benefits that ATSC 3.0 will bring, I am just not seeing them. Yet. Maybe they are not up to full power, I don't know, I am just a nerd like yourself who likes to tinker and see what's out there that I might be able to pick up. I really enjoy your channel, keep up the good work!

If your local ATSC 3.0 market is like the one I'm near (Nashville), you might want to wait to get a new tuner until the kinks are worked out. I keep up with a forum in which members are testing out ATSC 3.0 reception in Nashville. Some of them are dealing with instability or audio issues. I had originally wanted to get one myself, but after seeing their issues, I'll hold on to my 1.0 equipment for now.

Launching ATSC 3.0 is a big msitake we need to wait for a Backwards compatible 4K standard like we did with Color in the 50's, and the fact we're not shows the FCC learned nothing from the massive Faliure that was the 2009 Digital Transition. also if you remeber back in the 2000's they told us that ATSC 1.0 was so much better than Analog NTSC, and we all know that was a load of Bull so I'm very untrusting of ATSC 3.0's claims
@AntennaMan
@AntennaMan 3 жыл бұрын
I think the FCC learned about the flaws of 1.0 and fixed it with 3.0. The problem is they used 8VSB modulation on 1.0 instead of OFDM. If they had used OFDM, 3.0 probably would have been backwards compatible but it's not.
@900Yugo
@900Yugo 3 жыл бұрын
The actual problem is the 8VSB modulation,it's very finniky. COFDM modulation is more robust. In example,I have been to Taiwan and they rejected 8VSB due to serious multipath interference with ATSC. They were about the use ATSC until the very last min they switched to DVB-T,which uses OFDM.
@EMichaelBall
@EMichaelBall 3 жыл бұрын
Antenna Man Even if 1.0 was OFDM, it would have used MPEG TS, which is inferior to, and not compatible with, the IP backend of 3.0. The IP system allows for real-time picture frame rate and resolution changes; with MPEG TS, the tuner technically has to re-tune the station each time you switch things. Also, the IP interface allows for cell companies to license some of the 6 MHz for more capacity. So we'd need new equipment, anyway. I suspect that DVB-T3 will soon exist with an IP backend, using the new VVC video codec instead of the now-obsolete HEVC codec in ATSC 3.0. DVB-T2 uses MPEG TS, and cell carriers need their bandwidth...

ATSC 1.0 is much better than analog NTSC ever was. NTSC gave me at best 10 low res channels with lots of snow and other problems. ATSC 1.0 while not perfect gives me 50 channels with picture perfect quality. Looking forward to even better ATSC 3.

There aren't any channels listed on that site for my "market" Sadly, it likely wouldn't matter in the slightest anyway if there were. The backstory: I am from an area with 2 ABC affiliates, back in the analog days one of them, channel 3, was consistently the strongest signal strength channel, to the point that if you didn't switch RF modulators to channel 4 (and most people didn't bother) there would be visible ghosting or even a rolling double image (which many people had) from it bleeding in. This one only ever had mono audio. The other, channel 5, had stereo audio but was consistently the weakest. Whenever a movie was being shown I just kept my fingers crossed that 5 would be working and not fade out so that I had the better audio. Along comes digital and now all of them have improper aspect ratios and/or aspect ratio flags, sound issues, Etc. The NBC affiliate always broadcasts 5.1 and routes mono and stereo audio to the front left and right channels instead of just sending 2.0 audio or using Dolby Pro Logic during those times. This makes it impossible for viewers like me to use Dolby Pro logic because the AVR thinks that it is already discrete 5.1. It's maddening. In short my local stations have been messed up for as long as I can remember. Here's hoping that they can get it right this time around.

I’m new to your channel but I have a question, (and I sub’d).. Do you think the FCC will ever open up a broadcast range for home video broadcasting or home FM/AM radio (audio only),or some other type of transmission for home audio broadcasters? I remember talking with the FCC in the 90s about the cost of licensing and it was about $100.000 a license for a cheap FM channel. Podcasting over radio, or live streaming video via broadcast would be interesting. Ever see it happening?
@CrossForum
@CrossForum Жыл бұрын
I doubt it just due to the popularity of wireless and all types of RF transmission these days. Back in the late 1970s my college had a student-run radio station that had a very low level signal that covered the campus; think something like construction site walkie talkies. That was based on FCC standards at the time that allowed very low power stations for educational and some non-profit services at the low end of the FM range, down around 88 IIRC (FM wasn't as popular as AM back then). I'm not sure if that FCC reg is still in place, I know the college I went to has expanded its station to a more powerful system and it is fully licensed.

The NTSC standard was introduced in 1941, and 68 years later replaced by ATSC. People were forced to replace their televisions, creating considerable growth in the Chinese economy. Now, rather than maintaining a broadcast standard for an extended period, we are being told to replace our incompatible televisions with a new standard that will allow broadcasters methods to charge for the service while still inundating us with commercials, and further building the Chinese economy. All this in only about 30 years after the entire country (with a few minor exceptions) was forced to throw out NTSC standard televisions.

Technology advances quickly. Current tv sets will just need a set top box. It's not like you have to replace the whole thing. ATSC 1.0 allowed for paid OTA TV as well. It never happened. The government requires the main .1 channel of any broadcast tv channel to be free and open to the public. That's always been the rule. No one was interested in paid OTA.

Thanks 1st I heard of this new ATSC 3.0 standard. Makes since due to I never could see 4k being broadcast with the stations we have now. To get 4k we had to change the HDMI and DVI standards. It seems natural for the tuner standard to have to change for the extra bandwidth 4k works off of. All of the stations do not even broadcast in 1080p or i. Most are some mixture of 1080 720 480. To which I really do not care about 4k tv due to I watch most all 480p content. However, I would like to get clear OTA channels with out having to do a lot to get them like finding that right spot to put your antenna into and even not having to do some crazy multi antenna set up. I all ready have a homerun ATSC 1.0 box set up putting another beside it or replacing it would be as easy as rescanning channels. I do not see the stations building new broadcasting towers just for this change. Thanks for the eye opener video. Keep it up. Thanks again.

So,..I purchased the HD Homerun 4K to view local Detroit channels in 4K. Well,..they are not 4K although the channels are listed as HEVC signals. This is what was posted in the forum: "No one is transmitting 4K over the air right now outside of a LPTV station in Idaho that has Insight UHD as part of an encrypted subscription OTA service that has a bunch of other cable channels. There's no seperate ATSC 3.0 allocation for each station like there was during the 2009 transition, so groups of stations have to come together and pick an existing signal to share for at least 5 years, which doesn't leave enough bandwidth for 4K. Plus the major network feeds still originate as either 1080i or 720p, so what's available is just HEVC/AC-4 versions of the primary channels at mostly the same resolution, with a few stations deinterlacing the 1080i network source to provide 1080p. The main improvement for now is that the modulation used by ATSC 3.0 is better at handling multipath issues, and in some PLP configurations can be decoded under unstable reception conditions like while you are in motion." What was that,...No one is transmitting 4k? expect BF Idaho? The box is going back.

I also discussed with Best Buy away to turn any TV into a 3D TV by adding something on similar to the Sega Master System was in the 80s. I believe why 3D TV failed was because of 2D unfriendliness. In the fall of 2011 people were complaining to the local sports talk radio show that if the 2012 Super Bowl war in 3D they would be unable to watch it and that would be 70% of the audience that didn't accept 3D. Do you think that this new standard will in any way help people in rural areas to access tv signals?
@AntennaMan
@AntennaMan 3 жыл бұрын
It depends. If someone in a rural area has problems with multipath from trees then reception should improve. If the issue is someone living too far away or in a very mountainous area then no. The new standard can't overcome obstruction or the curvature of the earth.

@@AntennaMan Another added bonus to ATSC 3.0 over previous generations is the ability to have boosters or repeaters on the same frequency (single-frequency network). In the past, there have been translator stations that rebroadcast television stations in communities on a different frequency, because if one happened to be where both signals were both detected, they could cause interference and cancel each other out. Due to the nature of this signal type, they can broadcast on the same frequency and likely higher power than the older translator stations. This will improve the coverage of stations in rural areas.

Will the FCC issue coupons like they did when you had to first buy converter boxes years back?
@AntennaMan
@AntennaMan 3 жыл бұрын
No. They issued coupons because last time it was mandated broadcasters transitioned to ATSC 1.0. This is a voluntary transition. We're still a good 5-10 years before this thing really takes off anyway. That's plenty of time for someone to save $50 for a converter box.

FYI, that Sony x900h TV in the video might have the 3.0 tuner, but it's not been activated by Sony yet. I've not seen an official Sony ETA for the firmware update either.

I heard that. Very stupid of Sony to put ATSC 3.0 in a TV but have it disabled.

Excellent info! 6:30 - Multipath interference - any in-line filters to help minimize?

I heard an attenuator can sometimes help with multipath but besides that it's hard to get rid of.

How about a mobile TV over the air video. For example, let’s say someone has a conversion van, with a TV installed. Due to multi path, (and I assume Doppler effect plays in as well), reception above 5mph is difficult to impossible. How will this be improved in ATSC 3.0?

OFDM modulation which is what cell phones use. Check out this video of mine. You'll see me demonstrate ATSC 3.0 in a moving car. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5baeoqNmcmDqqs
