How Puccini could be "all there" at the age of 18 years is incredible to me. Whole sections of the choir and the entire choir get to sing "arias". What's not to love here? No one else sounds like this, one of the ultimate composers of opera. How lucky we are!

Genius is a throwaway word in 2019. To produce this as an 18 year old IS genius. This man could think up more unforgettable melodies in a single morning than most composers manage in a lifetime.

My choir has just started (tonight) rehearsing this. We sang it all through and then started picking it apart. Most of us have never heard it before, but by the time we'd finished rehearsal we decided we really enjoy it. When you sing it you never hear it as a whole, so thanks for posting it because now I can hear how it sounds to an audience.

I sang this with my college choir. I loved it from the first few notes. I memorized the entire messa so that now if I have to drive long distances I just start singing the Kirie and go from there. I sing the soprano part so when I listen to a recording I get to hear all the parts, solos and orchestra included. We sang throughout my college career many of the world's most beautiful sacred compositions, among them Rossini's Stabat Mater, Saint-Saens's Christmas Oratorio, Handel's Messiah and Cherubini's Requiem Mass. In my senior year the choir sang Brahms's Eine Deutches Requiem while I sang a part in Gilbert and Sullivan's Ruddigore. These were precious experiences. I am sure that many people who listen to these pieces on You Tube are reliving their own memories or right now getting to make memories of their own. This kind of music touches our very souls, especially in these painful times. Stay well, stay safe.

@@shirleyrombough8173 I've sung the Brahms Requiem with Kiri te Kanawa as the soprano soloist. I've also sung Mendelssohn's Elijah with Bryn Terfel as Elijah. I sang the Verdi Requiem in the Royal Albert Hall with 5,000 other singers. I've also done a lot of Gilbert and Sullivan: Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado, Trial by Jury and I was Cousin Hebe in HMS Pinafore but because of Covid I haven't sung with anyone else for over a year - not even in church - and I miss it so much. A great mass to refresh a depressed spirit. Sang it back in 2001 in Blois, Vendôme in Paris with Blois&Orléans choirs, associated to a Russian orchestra who needed just a day to rehearse. Better than any medicine!

@Aad-Riet Vreeburg-Klauke, wat heeft wijn met volume te maken? Wat is wijnige volume? Puccini, prachtige muziek maar tekst bij deze muziek of muziek bij deze tekst klinkt af en toe blasfemisch. Het is muziek die prachtig past in een opera, maar is weinig devoot, met name in het gloria.

A mon goût , une interprétation beaucoup trop lyrique , Puccini dans cette œuvre de jeunesse voulait , je le pense , donner une intériorité religieuse à sa partition , Michel Corboz est passé à coté , par une ampleur démesurée ... Il était nécessaire de quitter notre Puccini lyrique et de laisser la place au sacré ... l'humilité est absente, trop de fore vocale, des solistes absolument pas adaptés à ce genre de répertoire ... A coté de la plaque ... dommage .

Bjr, Pour moi la meilleure interprétation sur youtube du fait justement qu'elle soit lyrique. Il serait étonnant qu'à 20 ans Puccini ait voulu faire une oeuvre intimiste. Cette oeuvre a été écrite pour son examen à l'Istituto Musicale Pacini, donc il avait certainement la volonté de démontrer toute sa palette et maturité musicale. Bien cordialement

Cette pièce est entièrement dénuée d'intérêt. Qu'elle ait valu à son compositeur de 18 ou 20 ans d'être reçu à l'Istituto Musicale Pacini n'est au plus qu'un repère biographique indiquant que le compositeur était déjà bien avancé dans l'étude de l'écriture (ce qui ne l'a pas dispensé d'erreurs assez curieuses dans la préparation de certaines de ses modulations - je ne noterai pas les mesures ici.) À ce stade, nul ne saurait reconnaître ici la "patte" du maître, voire un début de style propre, hormis, peut-être, dans le phrasé de rares interventions du ténor. Quitte à se demander quand la "patte" a pris corps pour la première fois, on se tournera vers Le Villi, œuvre de jeunesse aussi peu connue qu'admirable. Bref, toutes les compositions de jeunesse ne méritent pas admiration béate (autre exemple, dans le cas de Puccini: Edgar), pas plus que des compositions "mûres" qui, telle La Bohème, ne contiennent rien de remarquable, de significatif. Sachez, bien-pensants, bon partisans dont les dents grincent en me lisant, que je suis un admirateur forcené du génie de Puccini, à mes yeux un des cinq plus grands compositeurs de tous les temps dont les opéras, après tant d'années, continuent de me bouleverser: c'est dire que je l'aime de passion, mais non sans raisons. Et s'extasier sur cette messe ou sur les autres de ses œuvres évoquées plus haut serait… déraison.
