Attaching a Greist Rotary Buttonholer to a Modern Sewing Machine

See how this old school Greist Rotary Buttonholer works on a modern sewing machine such as this low shank Brother GS2510.

I just had a question about the feed dogs. If your machine is capable of dropping feed dogs, do you still require a cover plate? I’m not sure my modern machine has a plate since it is able to drop the feed dogs.

A cover plate is normally only required if the machine can not drop its feed dogs. Thanks.

Would this work on a straight stitch only machine? Wouldn't the needle hit the plate?

Not so much punch in a modern plastic machine, I'd prefer the 99 for sewing layers of denim.

The Brother handled it pretty well as it has a full metal chassis which helps. I agree, the 99K is better at punching through thicker work.

To be fair (my daily driver is a 401A), these Brother machines do well for modern machines.
