WELCOME back to another ATTACK OF THE CLONES onslaught - where I take a look at almost 1:1 clones of various devices that run Android to see if they are any good...there's usually mixed results.
Now this could be considered part of [THE_PHONE_ARCHIVE] but that's more focused for phones that don't run Android as well as "archive purposes" if that makes sense. Just to distinguish the two series.
It looks good, it runs good...for 5 minutes and that's it. This thing I thought would be alright...for a GOOPHONE but this just turned out to be an absolute painful experience. I don't even need to go further into it...just sit back, relax and have a few laughs as I endure the pain and stress and...the infuriating nature of this thing it's just...no. Don't. I can see why this was sold at Cash Converters lol. Enjoy :)

I had an Android 4.0 phone just sitting in a drawer since 2012, recently I found it and tried using it, I legit thought it was the worst experience I could ever have when KZbin was taking way too long to open, but all of a sudden after watching this I feel like I've been spoiled.

I still occasionally use a Galaxy SII that I put unofficial Android 7 on, and it surprisingly works a lot better than this clone, even though it came out in 2011.

@@denny1527 It's definitely the RAM, iPhone clones tend to slow down a lot due to the heavy skin on top of Android, paired with at most 512mbs of RAM. This would have been plenty if the skin wasn't present, but it slows down the phone a lot.

The "Welcome Maimeite P50 Pro" device I once had to deal with was also painfully slow having similar specs, due to Android 4.1.2 being skinned to look like 10, and having a dozen possibly malicious janky apps running in the background. A phone with a clean Android install and these specs would've been semi-decent... in 2011.

I were able to get KZbin working on a Samsung Gravity Smart running 2.2 Froyo around 2018 or 2019. The audio and video were noticeably offset after a while and the phone's battery only lasted like 25 minutes.

The 6s/7 clones were incredibly well made compared to the Welcome clones nowadays. I almost bought a fake 6s Plus, I wasn't even watching out for fakes because I didn't know they existed, I was worried about buying a broken phone so I tested whatever I could and noticed there's something wrong here. I actually tried to sign on iCloud but it just kept loading, that's when I told the seller I didn't want it.

5:40 You can actually see the line at the bottom of the screen. The screen resolution is a bit short and the picture cuts off earlier than it should, which means the backlight works even under the home button. Still funny how they implemented it.

Browsing through the files, found files for several boot animations, including a "4G LITE" one, and one that's... "CHENGJI" branded (font makes it hard to read though). I guess that makes this the CHENGJI phone then. EDIT: btw, the apple watch app store thing, yeah that's just jpgs, i'm serious. Looking even deeper: the "License" in Settings - also just images, at least they've upgraded to PNGs. The App Store APK was built 13th March 2017, that should give you an idea of when the software side of things was last worked on.

41:37 the 4636 code is the testing menu, including wireless network related stuff. You don't get that on iOS, so that proves it's running Android underneath. (I also use the 4636 code to disable GSM, and have 3G/4G only mode, because let's face it, 2G/GSM is too poor for call quality and data speeds in any modern era.)

Out of interest, have you ever come across a brand called Bluboo? I used to use them as my daily driver, they were probably of a similar quality as Doogee. They had their own website and had plans to do an Android Wear device. They used to do decent phones... Then I think they dipped their toes in the "lets call our phone an S8 and see if people accidentally buy ours"... A phone I bought because I trusted their brand, but it was pretty awful. Not a knock-off physically, just a seemingly deliberate similar name. Then the company disappeared without a trace. It's a shame, as it takes a lot of trial and error to find trustworthy cheap Chinese brand like that. These days I just stick to the trusted brands like Huawei or Xiaomi.

The Blueboo S8 WAS a knockoff, but they did make some interesting phones, sad to hear they are gone. Also Doogee is much higher quality now than Blueboo ever was. They are probably the best really small chinese phone brand other than Ulefone.

@@darling_yext I think, the best cheap chinese brand is (or was?) Cubot. They had made phones with specs that made sense and had working firmware, no implementation of then-new tech like (slow) fingerprint sensors or (fake) quadcams. Because of decent firmware they were among the best (antutu) for the used cpu. But the latest models seem not to be THAT interesting, i'd say.

@36:40 The voice search is a "pre Google Assistant" era thing that I remember using in Android 2.1, same UI and sounds effects and everything. You know is a cheap phone when even the legit "Siri" is a service whose online features were closed in 2019. @38:49 The chipset model used apparently has 4 cores, all of them Cortex A7, with a dual core Mali 400 as GPU. I think a bunch of devices suffered as the GPU rendered things in memory, effectively killing the ram. From what I have seen in Chinese apps, especially for low cost wearables and IP camera, they like GPU decoding a lot. That poor phone, to render the launcher, was killing everything was able to, including the browser.

Can you actually test the accessibility features? See if there are speech options or a screen reader installed. It is a good way to tell if the clone manufacturer did their homework. This is because the iPhone and android devices have completely different accessibility systems as well as speech engines.

Imagine the effort that went into skinning this to look like iOS. They did a pretty convincing job at it. Well, it would be convincing if it didn't have the constant app crash popups and options that just don't work. But I assume it didn't crash when they were testing it. When you put this much effort into cloning the interface of another phone, you have to imagine it would've been easier for them to just make a generic design with stock AOSP. Would've actually worked better too.

Goophone has been doing this for years, IIRC they tried to sue Apple for patent infringement because they released a knockoff iPhone 5 called "Goophone V5" before the actual iPhone 5 was released. It's kinda sad, because if they put their effort into designing their own phones or something only vaguely inspired by the iPhone (like Huawei did with the P8) they would probably achieve similar success to other Chinese brands like Oppo or Xiaomi, instead of creating terrible illegal knockoff devices that belong in the trash since the day they leave the factory.

Unless I missed something, the 5 MP rear camera was taking 5 MP photos. 2560x1920 is 5 MP.

Actually, the boot screen would tell you it's fake, a black iPhone is supposed to have a black background and a white apple logo on boot, and the opposite for the white model. An iPhone has both of the screens put in it, regardless if white or black, and it can sometimes show the wrong screen, before correcting it if it kinda malfunctions and (re)boots in cold temperatures

And this is off-topic, but it really is a nice thing that modern devices have the killswitches built into the power button, pretty much just a force restart, activated by holding the power button for about 8 seconds (can vary with your device) And I have a tablet with old android on it (somewhere around Android 4), it's not really mine, but my family has it. And it has a reset button. Might be an entry for Tacky Tablets.

My guess why 'Siri' isn't working is just the phone is too slow, I've had phones in the past that take so long to initialise Google Voice Search's or Assistant's voice-to-text that it had timed out the request already.

I don't think the "Siri" app has any voice assistant capability at all. Seeing the jankiness of the other apps, they probably just took a generic text-to-speech voice synthesizer, recorded that one "what can i help you with" line, made it register whatever noise the mic picks up, and then play that looped animation to make it seem like it's actually doing something.

So, idk if someone else did it or not but... - Software Update Crashed - Account Setup Crashed - Browser Crashed EIGHT TIMES - Photos Crashed SIX TIMES - Maps Crashed - Phone Keyboard Crashed - The Phone itself crashed and almost died. - KZbin Crashed - GTA 3 Crashed Two Times - System Info Crashed 23 Crashes, unless I missed a Browser Crash.

It's things like this that make you realize why companies are SO against bootlegs. I mean, yes, you obviously don't want someone copying your product and making money from it, but even more than that, imagine someone bought this from a legit store which said it was really an iPhone. Most of the functions don't work, so someone may just think iPhones are crap and never consider an Apple product again.

2gb of ram would probably be stretching it, I’d say even 1gb of ram should be enough for android to run
