In OVA No Regrets, Erwin says to Levi "Memories of regret will only dull your future decisions. And then you'll begin to let others make your decisions for you. All that's left for you then is to die." Then in this episode, Erwin starts to have feelings of regret. Levi says to Erwin "I'm making the choice. Give up on your dream and die." It's amazing that foreshadowing came full circle all the way back from No Regrets. Incredible storytelling. Great reaction and analysis as always, LM.

Kinda spoilery i think Levi also "helped" Erwin to die a hero in a way, because Erwin wasn't truly doing all this for humanity, it was to fulfill his dream and it just happened to be in line with what is best for humanity, and in this scenario, Erwin was torn between choosing the selfish option and check the basement but lose the fight, or sacrifice himself selflessly so humanity can have a better chance by Levi killing the beast titan

It's a shame the show has moved so far beyond this so the events here don't seem all that significant in a grand scheme of things. Personally for me, the last charge of the Survay Corps is one of the greatest moments I've ever seen in anime, on par with Rohirrim Charge from Return of the King (LotR). This two scenes have so much in common, depicting the sheer determination and will of the leaders forced to lead their men to certain death, and the absolute loyalty to the cause displayed by the soldiers rushing head on to their doom.

The last conversation between Levi and Erwin is one of AoT’s greatest moments. I think it’s a genius piece of writing. In isolation, the line “Give up your dream and die” appears like the worst possible thing you could say to a dear friend. But once you view it in context, it turns into an expression of deep respect and devotion. They both know Erwin’s sacrifice is the only way to take down the Beast Titan and emerge victorious on the brink of defeat. Erwin’s entire life purpose is in arm's reach. He’s now left with the hardest of all choices: Does he forsake his friends and the future of mankind for his personal desire or does he sacrifice himself and his dream to give the Survey Corps a winning chance? Erwin has been guilt-ridden and ashamed for the pursuit of his dream at the cost of all the brave men and women who have followed him and died under his command: “And upon a mountain of their corpses I now stand”. He is seriously questioning whether all of these people died for nothing else but his selfish desire to vindicate his father. Levi knows about Erwin’s inner turmoil. So, he decides to break the chain of command by making the choice for Erwin, thus carrying his burden. Telling him to let go of his dream and die is exactly what Erwin needs to hear at this moment. Deep down Erwin already knows that he should abandon his dream in order to rid himself of this overwhelming feeling of guilt and die with a clear conscience. Ordering a man he respects beyond belief to his own demise must be an incredibly painful and traumatic experience for Levi, but it’s the only way to guarantee Erwin can die in peace. As tragic as it sounds, telling Erwin to die is the best choice Levi could’ve made in this desperate situation. It’s an act of compassion and respect on Levi’s part, which is certainly reinforced by his later decision (SPOILER) to honor Erwin’s sacrifice by not reviving him with the titan serum. Essentially, Isayama managed to turn the line “Give up your dream and die” into a touching moment of devotion and gratitude between two friends. That definitely deserves a lot of credit.

Excellent comment my friend. I would just like to add a small little detail that gives even more meaning to this beautiful analysis of Erwin and Levi. In the No Regrets OVA we can see that Levi got his no regrets mindset from Erwin himself but he also says, and forgive me for not remembering the words exactly, "when you start doubting yourself you let others make decisions for you, and then, after that, all that's left for you is to die". So Levi actually taking the choice away from Erwin and instead deciding himself for him is not only beautiful in its writing but also symbolic of the mindset they both share.

There's a subtle detail in this episode that you miss if you don't speak Japanese and I thought you would really like to know it. For the entire series, Erwin has referred to himself using the term "watashi" which is how you refer to yourself if you are an important person. But when he sits down with Levi and tells him how he really feels in this episode it's the first time he's referred to himself using the term "ore" which is the normal way of referring to yourself. So his vulnerability in this moment is even expressed in his word choice. It's amazing.

well not exactly. Ore is actually not used that often in japanese. Ore is basically " i " but in an impolite/rude way. Watashi is a formal " i " who is mostly used by girls and people in the common life like in work and stuff. So the fact Erwin is now using " Ore " instead of " Watashi " means that he basically gave up on his duty and title and is now just some guy that carries peoples' death on his shoulders.

I binge watch aot in the peak stage of the pandemic, around june last year, and the feeling to be locked down, friends and relatives dying was really devastating. that line "we are the ones who gives meaning to our comrades' lives" really helped me to cope with that. The only reason the Levi squad lost to the Female titan was because she regenerated faster then normal and they were hit with shock. It’s all about knowing the enemy. There’s no reason to doubt Levi’s ability to be able to take out the beast titan. We now know about hardening, the fact they protect their napes and we know they regenerate completely in about 30 seconds.

I've already watched this twice lol Erwin's speech about the dying and knowing that the ones who remain will give meaning to their sacrifice. Just genius. Makes me emotional every time. When he asks Levi if he can see their fallen comrades. Gives the feeling that Erwin sees them every day. He carries their sacrifice with him every where he goes and now he's sharing that with Levi. This show and this stretch of episodes is just storytelling at its finest. Some of the best episodes of TV ever. Not just anime.
