I'll try to clarify the history of this world with the information that we know now: almost 2000 years ago Ymir Fritz contacted “the devil” and became the first Titan. With her power, Eldia conquered Marley and the whole continent. From Eldians POV it was a golden age, while from Marleyans it was a period of terror. After the death of Ymir Fritz, her power was divided into 9 intelligent titans (Founder, Armoured, Colossal, Female, Beast, Ymir's (the one who wants to save Historia) titan whose name we don't know yet, Eren's And Grisha's titan whose name we also don't know yet, the one without a name who saved Zeke and Reiner, and another that we haven't ever seen). Eldians (or subjects of Ymir) are the only people who can turn into a titan. After 1700 years of such a way of things, Marley rebelled and won in the Great Titan war 100 years ago (if we count up to events in s1). The King gathered as many Eldians as possible and escaped to Paradis island. He erected three walls that we all know and vanished the memories of people inside the walls. Marley is afraid of titans inside of walls because there are a lot of them and they are huge. So they decided to send Eldians-criminals in Titan form to the island. Then Marley found resources on the island and started planning how to steal the Founding titan for themselves and so they won't be afraid of titans in the walls. They started to gather subjects of Ymir who will gain titan powers and steal the Founding. I think that's all. It could be a bit complicated for the first time, but I hope this will help you to understand better.

Overall clarification up to this point. A long time ago, Ymir Fritz (not our Ymir) gained the power of the titans. When she died, she split into 9 titans (The Founding Titan (the coordinate), The Armored Titan, The Female Titan, The Colossal Titan, The Beast Titan, The Jaw Titan (Ymirs titan), Erens Titan, The backpack titan, and a titan you havent heard or seen yet). These titans formed THE ELDIAN EMIPIRE, which then they ruled over the continent and "oppressed" the people of Marley with there titan power. One day Marley gained control over 7 of those nine and then were able to win a war that was 100 years ago. The ruler at that time, did not want to fight and moved as many of the eldians to an island to live in peace, away from all the conflict. That is the island where Eren and everyone is now, and the king took away the peoples memories to make them believe they were the only humans left. Marley sends Eldians who break the law or cause conflict to that island and turns them into titans as punishment. But they also need to get control of the founding titan so that they can take control of the Islands resources easier. That is why they sent Reiner Annie and Bert to the wall, and later Zeke (The beast titan, Erens half brother) to gain control of the founding Titan. Hope that helps

Don't worry, it's absolutely normal to get confused at this point: you've been overwhelmed by a mess of new information and you still have to put it together with what you knew so far. There is a lot of work to be done, but we can begin to sort out what we have just witnessed. To summarize as best as possible we now know that the origin of the titans is to be found in a young woman named Ymir Fritz who allegedly "entered into a pact" with a Mephistophelean figure who gave her the power of the titans. From her then nine titans would be generated. Thanks to this power, the kingdom of Eldia has subjugated its historical enemy Marley for a long time. This was 2000 years ago. In more recent times, in what is called the great war of the titans, Eldia is defeated by Marley. King Fritz, together with most of the Eldians, exodus to the island of Paradise by erecting three orders of walls formed by titans to protect themselves from external assailants. The Marleans, however, fear that the exodus Eldians may return and they have all those titans who form the walls and who alone could annihilate the entire planet. For this, for a long time they try to figure out a way to subtract the founding titan (what Reiner calls the coordinate), which alone can control all the other titans. The story of Grisha fits into all this, one of the many descendants of Eldians left behind, born and raised in the ghettos and treated like the worst of the scum (remember Bertoldt who addressed our protagonists as "the spawn of the devil"). Most of these Eldians have been indoctrinated by the Marleans to hate their Eldian brethren on Paradise Island. We now know that Grisha was an Eldian from the ghetto who, due to the injustice done to his sister, grows in hatred towards Marley and becomes one of the main exponents of the Eldia restoration movement. Here he becomes romantically involved with Dina Fritz, a descendant of the royal family. From their union Zeke was born, the very Zeke who is now the beast titan and therefore we now know to be Eren's half-brother. Grisha tries to inculcate Zeke's vision of things, but it obviously doesn't work: Zeke denounces his parents and the movement attached to them, which will ensure his survival and proof of loyalty to Marley. From this, however, we can give context to Zeke's cryptic words about wanting to save Eren from Grisha's indoctrination. Grisha, Dina and the rest of the movement are driven to the shore of Paradise Island and doomed to roam that land as pure titans. We have already seen this scene in Ymir's flashback to which we can now give a context: Ymir was one of the many Eldian orphans who grew up in the Liberio ghetto, exploited by one of the many restoration movements to impersonate the reincarnation of the real Ymir Fritz . The rest we know how she ended up. However, we now know that only Eldians can transform into Titans (both pure and one of nine intelligent and shapeshifting), as they are genetically descendants of Ymir and that is why the Marleans keep them alive and indoctrinate them so that they can be exploited for use the power of the nine titans. In the dramatic execution scene of the condemned being transformed into titans, we learn to our horror that Dina Fritz is transformed into none other than the titan responsible for the death of Eren's mother, fulfilling, in a sense, her promise that one day she would be returned to Grisha. Hopefully you rewatched this episode a few times, or at least that all your confusion was cleared up in the next 1-5 episodes. 🙂 You did point out one thing, though, that I've never seen another reactor note: Marley DOES want to invade the island, but they are ALSO turning people into Titans there -- and yes, all those dumb Titans COULD be a deadly inconvenience to their invading forces! What gives? Well the answer is that they didn't decide to invade the island until very recently, after they've already spent ~80 years dumping Titans onto the island. That is just their habitual way of punishing Eldians by this point.

After the original Ymir died, she split into the nine titans. You have been introduced to 8 of these titans. Eren's titan, armored titan, colossal titan, female titan, 4 legged titan that rescued Beast titan, Beast titan, Founding titan, Ymir's/Marcel's titan. The Eldians are being persecuted in Marley. The Marley government brainwashes Eldians and offers them to fight for Marley by utilizing 7 of the titans. The founding titan has the ability to control all of the pure titans (stupid titans). This titan was in the hands of the royal family in the walls of Paradis. The founding titan can also command the giant titans that are inside of the walls. The pure titans are useless to Marley. Without the power of the founding titan, they are a threat to Marley. As punishment to Eldians, they turn them into pure titans and drop them off at Paradis island. We have seen the Beast titan also control Pure titans. It is a mystery how the Beast titan is able to do this. With the information we have been given in the show so far, only the founding titan is suppose to have that ability. Around 120 years before the events of the show, there was a giant war between Eldians and Marlians. Marley was somehow able to get 7 of the nine titans on their side. The king of Eldia decided to stop fighting and create the walls in Paradis where he hoped to live as pacifists. Marley has managed to become the super power of the world using 7 of the nine titans for war. But because of the advance in military technology, Marley's power is declining. In a attempt to once again become the worlds dominating military force, Marley decided to attack Paradis island in order to steal oil and steal the founding titan. We witnessed these events in episode 1 with the death of Eren's mother.

I'll try to explain without spoiling things: Ymir Fritz(not the Ymir you know) was the first titan and when she died her power was spit into nine, these nine titans(including the founding titan) make up all the smart titans in existence so there are only nine people that can turn into titans and back into humans. Eldians are a race of people that share the blood of Ymir and only Eldians can turn into titans(pure titans or one of the nine). The reiss family on the island was actually the Fritz family of royal eldian blood that held the founding titan that has powers(erase memory and control pure titans) that can only be used by people with royal blood(including Zeke, Grisha's son). The king who build the walls on the island wanted to save the world from Eldian rule so took as many eldians as he could and erased their memory of the outside world to keep the world safe and left a warning to the rest of the world so they would not attack the people inside the wall but marley punished eldians still in their country by turning them(with titan spinal fluid) into pure(dumb) titans on the island just to screw with the eldians in the walls. Marley also has 7 of the nine titans meaning they hold control over 7 eldians who are smart titans and they can pass that power to other eldians inside marley who are loyal to marley like annie and reiner. Why would eldians do this? Because they have families living in marley that they want to protect or give a better life. Later both marley and eldians, who where against marley, decided to try to get the founding titan. Marley needed to get the founding titan so that the warning of unleasing the titans in the wall can no longer threaten them(only a royal eldian with the founding titan could do it) and that is also why the royal family in the wall hid their identity.
