I don't know if you're familiar with the similarities between the creation of the titans in the show and Norse mythology, but Ymir, the original giant in the mythology, is supposed to be the first being ever created, and it was made from a liquid substance considered the source of all living things called the Eitr. Also, the world tree, called Yggdrasil, spreads into three branches, which originate the 9 worlds of the Norse mythology (if you played God of War you know). I think the parallels are pretty obvious by now, even the flower with the drop of blood on top (a daisy) is associated with Freya, the goddess of love of fertility, symbolizing Ymir's search and desire for love. It's really amazing once you analyze every weird detail or object that stays on-screen for a bit longer than usual

Yes and the parasite under the tree that comes in contact with Ymir could be a nod to Níðhöggr that gnaws on the Yggdrasil roots. Also Níðhöggr is one of the 8 Linnormr in norse mythology. Makes me wonder if we'll see more titans with powers on par to the founding titan in the future? Níðhöggr is rivals with an eagle that sits on top of Yggdrasill, so I'm interested to see if we get a bird titan at some point that battles Eren or something. Níðhöggr also has control over his own little shadow realm, called The Shore of Corpses, where evil people are punished. I doubt all of this will show up later, but I am VERY intrigued to see how much Norse mythology gets incorporated here.

There’s a comment on their Patreon that talks about this. Really cool as well, I’ll try to copy it here Edit: here it is, credit goes to a Robert H. The ancient Marleyans resemble the earlier Romans, and today's Marleyans (and some Marleyans of Elderly descent) have Italian-influenced names like Niccolo, Carlo, and Porco. Marleyan cuisine consists of pizza, pasta, and seafood. In addition, they have a kind of Italian aesthetic, like the military uniforms that look like Italian colonial uniforms, or the weapons they use that look like Carcano rifles. Furthermore: The name Marley clearly comes from the Italinian word Mare, which means sea. Lago, the ancient city that was destroyed (Grisha / Zeke Backstory, Season 2 Ending), means lake in Italian. The ancient Eldians, on the other hand, look like Germanic barbarians or even Vikings, and most modern Eldians have German names and surnames, such as Yaeger, Braun, Braus, Ackerman, Kirschtein, and so on. Their folklore is also more northern European. Ymir, for example, is a character from Norse mythology that really exists. In our world, the Germanic tribes were enslaved and colonized by the Romans. In AoT, their world map is a mirrored version of ours, and it seems that their history is also mirrored: the " Germanic tribes " defeated the " Romans " with Ymir's powers. On Norse mythology: Muspelheim and Niflheim are the oldest of the nine Norse worlds. Muspelheim was a world of primordial fire, filled with lava, flames and soot. Niflheim is a primordial world of ice, mist and snow. It was a mixture of the icy air of Niflheim and the burning air of Muspelheim that created the primordial soup from which the primordial giant Ymir emerged. After the gods (Willy [Vili], Odin, Vé) have killed the primeval giant Ymir, they create from her corpse all existing things. The world tree Yggdrasil is the first tree that grows (embodiment of creation as a whole: spatial, temporal and content). It is the largest and most magnificent tree in the world. Its branches spread over all nine worlds and stretch across the sky. Yggdrasil has three great roots that spread to three of the nine worlds.

Some people expected Eren's tone to be angry/more angry during his speech, but I prefer the anime version. The anime's rendition, which is calm and distorted, is superior. From the 13 fingers pointing to Ymir symbolizing her curse (13years as a titan), to the bloody flower with 9 petals symbolizing the 9 titans, to the image in the book with Ymir and the devil (Ymir giving her power to the devil of the earth, Eren) to so many more... This episode alone is enough to put AOT in a class of its own. An absolute masterpiece.

Ymir giving her power to Eren? I mean, sure, but that's certainly not what's depicted in the book intentionally. But yeah I suppose, at a stretch, it's a funky parallel, and she does pretty much make that "deal with the devil" 2000 years in advance.

@@fahrenheit2101 eren is the end to her story, he was predestined, or rather, he predestined himself into the past (the power of the attack titan came from Ymir) by saving Ymir, so maybe that is what is depicted in the book, that to undo the great evil that was dispersed onto the land by Ymir's abuse, a bigger evil paid the bill.

@@roberthorne9597 and the book held such wisdom and predicted such a future? Not all likely. the book's exactly what it is at face value, given how long ago it was written, anything else is just cool poetic details that, canonically speaking, don't bear relevance. I do like the symbolism of it though, but I wouldn't say Eren's undoing the evil at all, just perpetuating a different sort.

I think what people miss is that Ymir wanted to be loved, and she viewed being useful as a way to be loved. She hoped to be love by the people, which is why she took the blame, then once she had the power of the titans, she wanted to be loved by the king and the Eldian people which is why she helped them, and something mess up like getting the "seed of the king" could be misconstrued by Ymir as her being loved. That is also why she wanted to protect the king with her life, she wanted to be helpful and loved, but hearing him still call her his slave even after saving his life and then demanding even more from her, made her finally give up on being loved by the king and she died since she lack motivation similar to how titan shifters don't heal if they have no motivation.

This is actually mind blowing. in season 3 when we saw grisha's memories for the first time, the info dumping episode, grisha's father said, the 145th king of the walls fled to paradis the titan shifters die after 13 years so they had to pass it on after 13 years of having the power. 145 kings, each lived 13 years since having the founder titan. 145 x 13 = 1885. in the first episode they said titans annihlated humanity 100 years ago.(meaning 100 years ago king fritz altered their memories to think so) season 3 ep 3 when erwin was talking with pyxis, he said somthing about the truth of what happened 107 yeras ago is not known yet. so specifically it was 107 years ago king fritz altered everyones memories. 1885 (since first founder titan which is yumir died) + 107 (since king fritz moved to the island)= 1992 assuming in the year 1992 since the death of yumir, king fritz has had 0 years left, so obviously he had done the plan with the warhammer holder a year before dying, fled to the island then lived a year before passing the power) so when 1884 years since yumir died, the king wiped their memories, + adding 107 years to reach the day the attack on the walls started(ep1). the attck on wall maria in episode 1 started 1991 years after the death of yumir. since episode 01 the story progressed 9 years to reach the current episode 80. 1991 + 9 = 2000.

Wait maybe I’m just confused, but in season 3 when Erwin was talking to Pyxis and said 107 years ago, it had already been 5 years since the walls were breached in episode 1. Which means it was actually 102 years from the time the King wiped their memories to the moment the wall was breached, not 107. So 1884+102 = 1986 years since the death of Ymir. Add 9 years and we get 1995, not 2000. Maybe I’m misunderstanding something
@viriatox9782
@viriatox9782 2 жыл бұрын
It's very interesting, but I think you are wrong in 2 aspects: In the first place, when Erwin expressly mentions the figure of 107 years to Commander Pixis, that happens during the events narrated in the 1st part of the Season 3, for what has happened 5 years after the attack of the Colossal and Armored Titans on Shinganshina . That is, that attack occurred 102 years after 145th king Karl Fritz executed his plan. And the events that are happening in the Final Season occurred 4 years after discovering the basement (fact happened about 2 to 3 months after that talk between Erwin and Pixis) and 3 years after discovering the sea, it means that they are happening 111 years after 145th king Karl Fritz executed his plan. 145 x 13 = 1885 1885 + 102 = 1987 1987 + 5 + 4 = 1996 Also, Eren, Mikasa, and Armin and the rest of the young protagonists come from the 104th Cadets Corps, a class that enlisted 2 years after the colossal attack on Shinganshina. The 109th Cadets Corps (that Flock forces Shadis to beat up) it is the one that at that moment is in its last year of instruction (which lasts 3 years) before graduating to be able to choose the branch of the army that they wanted. 1885 + 104 = 1989 1989 + 5 = 1994 1994 + 2 = 1996 Secondly, we know that the first king was that bastard named Fritz, but the Ymir curse does not apply to him because he was never a titan, and although it seems that he died when his daughters (who did have the Ymir curse) were alive (perhaps 4 more years, which would cause the sum of the figures (1996 + 4 = 2000)), I doubt very much that whoever succeeded him as Eldian king was one of them, but another son of his, from another woman (the episode hints that he had numerous concubines), who would not suffer Ymir's curse either. This is a theory of mine, but I think it may be correct for the following information: if Ymir only had 3 daughters (Maria, Rose, and Sina) and they were all fathered by Fritz, then all of Subjects of Ymir are members of the royal family. However, Eren only had access to the power of the Founding Titan when he was in contact with people from what we know as the Royal Family (Dina Fritz, in her titan form; Rod and Historia Reiss, and Zeke Jeager). My theory is that considering Ymir's curse, Maria, Rose and Sina had to die even at a younger age than Ymir herself (all three appear to be younger than Ymir's age when she gained titan powers), giving birth to few children each (the most reasonable figure is that there were 3 children for each of them, giving rise to the 9 Titans). In this way, the Founding Titan is separated from the rest of the 9 Titans. Then, after an indeterminate amount of time, the then bearer of the Founding Titan must have made a kind of vow similar to the one made by 145th king Karl Fritz so that only the lineage from that bearer of the Founding Titan could inherit the full power of the Founding Titan. In addition, it is most likely that said bearer of the Founding Titan was paired with a member of the line of succession of the Eldian Crown of that time (which would be a non-titan descendant of the 1st king Fritz) to unify both the Eldian Crown and the power of the Founding Titan, since it is necessary to keep in mind that the Fritz dynasty reigns uninterruptedly since the origin of the Eldian Empire. That could better explain what Grisha's father says when he explains Eldian history from Marley's perspective ("1820 years ago..."), a fact that happened 37 years before the events are happening during the Final Season. As a result, the first Fritz kings reigned longer than the 13 years limited by Ymir's curse, but some kings with the founding titan may have died before their time (surely due to internal power struggles similar to the Great Titan War, and perhaps for that reason, 145th king Karl Fritz had those ideals), making the figure of 2000 years possible.

I don't know why are people surprised, like when Armin showed Eren the book from the outside world, Eren realized he wasn't free, while for Armin being able to explore and satify his curiosity in the outside world meant freedom, for Eren having those places meant freedom and the reason he couldn't have them was because there were walls needed to protect them from the titans, hence why up until season 3 he thought that by eliminating all the titans he would finally be free. After all the titans were killed and they finally reached the sea, Eren had already seen that beyond the sea there were only people that hated them and just like the titans stopped him from being free, now the entire world was stopping him and we all now how he deals with people who try to take his freedom, Eren takes theirs first. Hence the last thing he says on season 3 was " If all of our enemies die, will we finally be free?". But the irony being that Eren himself will never be free as he is not doing what he wants, he is doing exactly what is set out for him already by his future self, Eren is a slave to himself, he can never be free.

Your analysis of Eren's character and motivations has to be one of the most lucid and precise I've ever heard. I think it's brilliant that you started questioning his character the moment he saved Mikasa. I remember thinking the same way back then. Not to say that he didn't do the right thing, he saved Mikasa from those kidnappers, that's heroic. But the fact that he was even able, as a child, to think and act like that always left me wondering if he was insane or something like that since the very start of the story. Of course I never thought he would go this far, but his very "complex" state of mind is something that has always been in the back of my mind every time something important happened (when he learned about the Coordinate, when he learned of the outside world, when he planned the attack on Liberio, etc...) Also, maybe you've already heard this but the story probably won't end with this season, there might be a movie for the finale. Yeah kinda weird I know, this "Final Season" has started in 2019 I think and it's been split in two parts and that still won't be enough lol

Amazing how Ymir was depicted as a nice selfless figure on Paradis and an adult who made a deal with the devil on Marley, but both sides were wrong. She wasn’t selfless on her own will, she had to be selfless in order to survive as a slave. She was also not an adult who made a deal with the devil, she was a child who simply did as she was told. All this glory or hatred placed on a child who never should have had to deal with any of that in the first place, and when the “love” she thought she finally got as a titan just turned into another order even as she lied on the ground in her own blood, she no longer wanted to live. So when she died and went to the Paths, she reverted back to the child we see now.

lets also not forget King Fritz in all of this. Honestly I dont even wanna call him Fritz, I just call him Fritz445 aka EDP445, since its heavily implied he gave his "seed", even tough she was like 12 or so. And not only is it a fact he made "her" daugthers eat all of her corpse, but he also gave them up to be basically systematically ra8ed and then told them to feed their spines to their grandchildren if they died. I just got the creeps from when he was lying in bed telling his daugthers to "bear children and multiply" and there is a crowd of adults looming behind them... its not even fun to think about what that implies...

I agree with you. People actually need to know about this basic thing about Ymir. No, she's not a "simp" who is like "oh yeah i love you, beat me harder, hurt me". WTF. She thought it was "love", because the king actually used her as tool, probably gave her a lot of things too in the empire, she thought it's "better" than to be a useless slave. But she still thinks as a slave. It hurt and horrible, until she got speared and saw Fritz that still saw her a mere slave, she no longer wanted to live anymore. Thought she could go from this agony if she just dies, she entered the path where she still had to obey the Fritz all over again. It's just tragic.

I have so many thoughts! Eren: The Marleyans had The Devil of All Earth as an explanation for the origin of titan powers and Yrmir. I found it really interesting that Eren is being presented now as a literal devil, first tempting Grisha (literally being the whispering devil on his shoulder) and now in that last image of his face he looked almost demonic. I also find it really interesting that, with all the memories shenanigans with the attack and founding powers, the very concept of free will is in question. In AoT time is a fixed thing it seems, what happened always happened and was always meant to happen. We don´t know how much Eren saw but is he even culpable of his actions? What he is doing is of course wrong, its genocide after all, but if he saw himself do all this is this even his choice or is he himself a puppet of his future self? Yrmir: Imagine being a slave your entire life and then in death spending 2000 years in a place where an instant is an eternity doing endless work. A second for Zeke felt like years and years for him, 2000 years must have been a mind-numbing amount of time for Yrmir. For sure the one with the most tragic backstory, poor girl. She was so deep in the slave mentality because she knew nothing else. Yrmir was never free until Eren gave her that choice, she never had someone be kind to her and Eren was the first to treat her like a person. Even Zeke who´s plan was arguably more ethical than Eren´s just saw her as a tool and nothing more. I really think Eren is somehow her wish for freedom made flesh and of course she would be all about watching the world burn, it brought her nothing but pain.

In terms of culpability, I feel there are two types of people in AOT, the ones that just follow their lifes path unknowingly, and Eren. Eren is in the unique situation of being able to see his own future and deciding to not only follow it, but manipulate others paths to ensure his own. I feel once you take part in enforcing the cycle you are culpable for what happens in it. In terms of wrong I feel Eren is thinking correctly in: Short of miraculously finding some place where the True Eldians can live with no one else in that world (which wouldn't work anyway because inside the walls is the place he was born, it's a huge part of what he's fighting for) only one of three things can happen. 1) The True Eldians die (probably ensuring the deaths of all Eldians to finally end the threat). 2) The True Eldians kill all non-Eldians and now have to deal with many Eldians that have been raised to hate Eldians creating massive infighting (though the True Eldians would have many supporters too) 3) Eren kills two birds with one stone and protects his home, and the True Eldians freedom in one fell swoop by CREATING a world where humanity did perish outside the walls. The only time this ends in complete success for Eren is omnicide. it completely makes sense, and Eren has actively shaped events in order to obtain the means to ensure his (and by extension the True Eldians) freedom. regardless of possibly being called by Ymir, he's culpable, and however terrible his actions are, he feels they are 100% necessary.....that being said I'm anime only so I don't know if he's gonna pull another uno reverse card.

Also thinking about the future seeing and the free will, Eren most likely has already thought about that! He saw everything that was gonna happen through his dad’s memories, meaning that he saw himself doing things in the past in the future. Remember when he was acting really depressed and off when they went to the beach? He’d already begun to grow his hair out then. He definitely knew what he was going to end up doing, and has debated whether hes truly free to make choices or hes stuck doing what has to happen. Thats probably why he also said that about defeating their enemies giving them freedom; he most likely saw everything leading up to this and knew that he would have to cause the rumbling and end the world. Ironically, eren being the one chasing freedom the most is what stopped him from being free, since he caused the past and the future and boxed himself into this timeline
@Indoor_Carrot
@Indoor_Carrot 2 жыл бұрын
I see you've watched that video essay too. It poses a very interesting thought. If you can see yourself in the future doing something completely different to anything you would have imagined you would do. E.g. you hate school, but see a future where you are a teacher. Would your actions from then on be influenced by knowing the future outcome and therefore end up creating said future? Even if you attempt to avoid it, may ironically create the very future you don't want. Or maybe seeing it encourages you to change your view of being in a school and start looking into teaching more closely and actually enjoying the idea of it. That decision to research it only came from the vision of the future outcome. In this case, are you free to make your own choice with teaching? This concept is important to consider when discussing Eren. He sees the future and what he will do with the Rumbling, so does he have any free will at all?

Heyo no spoilers there. But truly they do get it. I came for the cute girls but stayed for the analysis. They freakin get it. Though I'd argue things aren't as simple as "what Eren does is more evil cuz more people outside Paradis". Both sides wish to commit genocide on one another out of fear that they'll be killed if they don't so both are tragically right in their desire to stay alive. Even if you are guilty of having started it. AOT is the ultimate lesson about war. It reflects perfectly how we justify evil based on past attrocities so we can seek revenge and cause them in return.

Checkout this beautiful foreshadowing in storytelling: The flower in Ymir's memory at 19:54 & 22:38 is also a reference to AoT’s first episode. You see, when Ymir was trapped between worlds for 2,000 years, she kept trying to "send" her memories to the Eldians (instinctively), seeking a call for help (The flower with blood on it was one of her memories - obviously, since she experienced it). But no one responded, cared, or paid attention to the signs. Only Eren listened (1st episode, Eren wakes up, and there’s a peculiar image of a flower with blood on it in his thoughts). After Ymir called for help for nearly 2,000 years, Eren was the ONLY ONE who had the will & resolve to find her..

Edit: Also for anyone wondering the creature that came out of Erens neck and attached to Ymirs spine is a Cambrian lifeform called a Hallucigenia, which lived 500 million years ago, during the Cambrian period. It was discovered in the Burgess Shale in British Columbia Canada. The Burgess Shale is known to us as the ''Origin of life'' due to the vast biodiversity fossilised in it. All lifeforms on the entire planet comes from it. We could say Ymir ''came into contact'' with the Origin of Life/ Titan life through the Hallucigenia. Im glad that her backstory was addressed, and honestly what a tragic character. I honestly don’t blame Ymir for helping eren destroy the world Ymir was given nothing but shit her entire life and beyond that, poor thing . Eren grabbing her was probably the only form of compassion she ever felt from someone else. I hope that eren achieved his goals so that his people can be free and Ymir can be free too

Sympathy for Ymir is all well and good, but I don't think Eren wiping the slate clean of all life is going to do anything for their freedom or for Ymir's when everyone who treated her like she was less than dirt are now dirt themselves. 2000 years dead. Basically I'm saying, is it really the world's fault, or, the people who inheret it now's fault and do they deserve to die in such a horrific way ?

Some people scoff at Ymir asking why she continues to serve the King after gaining godlike powers, it's called learned helplessness. Look at her in front of the king sitting as if she's been shackled but there are no chains.

The terrified look that you guys had during the crumbling of the walls is so accurate and reflective of the horror that the characters themselves were witnessing. Such a great reaction!

Its crazy how manga readers were complaining about the ending and the additional pages, while anime onlies are literally predicting and expecting the ending even with the additional pages, viz. their pre reaction discussion

Based on its form, the creature that gave Ymir her powers is a hallucigenia, an actual creature that existed millions of years ago and one of the strangest species that has ever existed. It's described as a bizarre and crazy worm that looked like an allien. Current invertebrates derive from this and the name refers to the enormous increase in biodiversity that occurred for it and how its appearance seemed like a hallucination, Its appearance was so strange that the paleothogues could not believe it was real. It actually is an armored worm that lived in shallow seabeds, like, literally a worm with legs and spikes, and a relative in the evolutionary tree of life (but well ofc, with some fantasy elements since we're in a fantasy story). Reminds of what Krueger said, that Ymir obtained her power doing contact with the origin of life and material.

So basically I watch 2 reaction channels, one is 2 Brothers React, where they see everything in a very logical moral, and admire the actions scenes, and then I watch LM Reactions to watch the emotional viewpoints, seeing these 2 perspectives really make my day, you guys are awesome 🔥
