So the character did something that made no logical sense for the sake of plot. If he died during the charge, no one would have had an issue. Rather, instead he was kept alive just long enough to justify Armin getting powers and his importance to the plot. (despite never doing anything that other characters couldn't figure out.) It's the perfect example of the meme where a bad writer kills off a character for the obvious reason of another characters growth.

In the world of attack on titan morals is equal to shit. I'll tell you why. Armin and mikasa wanted to let the rest of the people know that even eldians from paradis are good people. But eren, with his knowledge of the past, with grisha's memories knew all to well the mentality of the marleyans and the way eldians are treated. Eren realised that the simple thought of getting along with them is hopeless. Now let me explain why. Imagine being a marleyan or a guy from any other nation other than paradis. You are not an eldian. You have come to know that there is an island of people who can literally turn into giant human eating monsters. So, will you care about getting along with them, or will you care about the safety of you and your family? No one wants such a huge threat to exist in the same world as them. If it was me, I would want to eliminate every possibility of those eldians killing our people. So I would most definitely agree for them to be eradicated. And the brutal history of the eldians empire worsens the image of the current eldians on paradis. Why the hell will people get along with such dangerous beings? Eren understands the world's point of view. He understands that they will never get along. It's like having an island of monsters in our world. The humans will make it their mission to wipe out this threat. You see, in other shows, the main characters are humans who fight and kill monster race. But in AOT it is the opposite. The race of monsters are fighting back against their fate, while eren jaeger leads their nation. In our world, such a cruel decision will never be justified, but in the cruel world of attack on titan such a cruel decision is justified, but that doesn't mean it is correct. It's not like anything in AOT is correct or wrong in the first place. For example, you may claim that Armin's plan is correct, but from the point if view of the eldians of paradis, Armin's plan is shit, and they will call him a selfish bastard because he is putting his morals before his own people. The rest of the world will call eren a selfish bastard because he's only caring about his people and not the innocent lives that he's killing. You see how shit and screwed the world of AOT is? It's not bad writing, in fact it's brilliant and masterfully well done.
