I believe the badge Levi gave the scout was actually petra's. He said it belonged to Ivan to comfort him.
@Zelarith
@Zelarith 3 ай бұрын
It is. Levi never got to Ivan's body, so it could not have been Ivan's. The only patch we saw Levi collect was out of one of the bodies with the bite marks (i.e. his squad), and he took it from the smallest body, which appears to be Petra. Also, it would explain why Petra's body unwrapped as they dropped the body. And I love this detail, especially because the soldier he conforts is the same one who called him "heartless" moments earlier.

One of the things that the anime changed from the manga but is essential when it comes to character is that in the finale when Mikasa fights Annie, her motivation is not that Annie hurt Eren, it's that Levi was hurt because of her during their previous fight with the female titan and was now out of commission. Mikasa felt responsible for that and wanted to succeed in this mission to take down the female titan.

Annie and Marlowe's conversation is actually quite a bit longer in the manga and is actually some of my favorite dialogue in the entire series so I figured I'd type it up here in case you're curious. Annie: "I think that when "good people" like you manage to take control, that's when it's all over." Marlowe: "Oh so you can talk after all. Why don't you keep going then, if you have something to say." Annie: "I think you're an upright person. What you say is right. I know that people like you exist. Going against the flow takes a lot of courage. I respect that. Maybe people who can do it are just stupid, but well what I'm sure of is that people like that are rare. So you can't call them common. You can't call them normal either. People like you get called special. So what should we call people like us then? People who put their own interests ahead of others? People who go along with it when they see injustice? What did you call them? "Worthless" or "Evil"? From what I saw of the training corps, it was mostly made up of worthless evil people who wanted to be in the military police." Marlowe: "Stop beating around the bush. You're just trying to say that you guys aren't really that bad" Annie: "No I do think we're worthless, and we're definitely evil. You certainly can't call us upright, but doesn't that just makes us regular people? If people were essentially good like you say, then this organization wouldn't be as rotten as it is, would it? It's just structured so that it reflects human nature, that's all. So even if I'm the kind of weak person who gets swept along with the flow, I just want you to think of me as human that's all" Marlowe internal dialogue: "Upright huh? So if there are flaws in a system that assumes all its members are upright people could it be. It's not the people that need to change. It's the system?" I actually think the way the anime handles the scene between Marlowe and Annie actually contradicts it's original message. In the anime when those corrupt MP's attack Marlowe before Annie stops them and then proposes helping him overthrow/punish those corrupt people, none of that happens in the manga. The whole point of Annie's speech in the manga is that she puts her interests above others, goes along with it when there's injustice and is too weak to go against the flow of things. Which although makes her evil, also just makes her a normal person. It's a normal type of evil that the military police is basically based upon, the whole organization is about people moving to the interior walls, as far away from the titans in order to leave comfortable lives while others in the outer walls starve and get eaten by titans. It's pretty evil and corrupt but also just based on the human desire for self-preservation which Annie is obviously motivated by as she said to Armin in episode 16 all she wants is to save herself. Which is why by the end of the conversation she converts Marlowe's strict ideology that it's not a few corrupt/evil people that need to change, but the system that naturally brings out and thrives upon the base level of evil in normal people.

When they said "you can't transform underground" it was because you would get crushed. You would break the entire bridge etc whatever is on top and you would get crushed by the debris. Also there is no space for your titan body to appear in a well or in an underground tunnel. It doesn't mean that their powers somehow stop working underground. There is no reason to believe that and there is no evidence to support that. In fact we have evidence against what your theory is in the future seasons. Not that important but I didn't want you to keep misunderstanding a scene. The reason Eren couldn't transform probably IS because he didn't have the heart to fight Annie.

You got it exactly right! Hajime Iseyama knew the entire story before he even wrote chapter 1. Now obviously some details changed here and there but the major plotlines of every character was preplanned since the beginning. The rewatch value of AOT is insane. I've seen it like 15 times and I still keep finding new things where he foreshadowed something slightly etc. The story doesn't tie up just for the sake of it, but instead it feels like we are on a journey with our characters discovering the secrets of this world and when they find something out, so do we. It's like looking through a keyhole waiting for the door to open. It's super cool and so masterfully done. Can't wait till S3 and S4 when Iseyama blows your mind with the stories he can build.

With Eren its less about compassion and empathy in general and more about strong attachment with his friends, thus his shock at Marco's death and refusal to believe that Annie can be the titan. He is very protective of people closer to him.

These videos have made me wanna rewatch the show now. Dropped off around season 3? Lotta stuff was happening and I never got back to it but now seems as good a time as any. I love Armin's little "people aren't good or evil" speech. You can really see the transition from 'sweet boy must protect' to 'oh he's got a manipulative side'. It's fun watching the way these characters change over the course of the story.

Oh, something that may be a good idea to incorporate into your schedule are the OVAs There's Ilse's Notebook, which is a scout mission that takes place in between the fall of shinganshina and trost (I would watch it now that you've finished season 1) A sudden visitor, a gag episode about 104 cadet core training Distress, a more serious 104 cadet core training ep (I would also suggest watching these now) No Regrets 1 and 2, Levi's backstory (you could watch this now or after season 2) Wall Sina Goodbye 1 and 2, stories about Mikasa and Annie (I'm not sure where to place these, maybe after season 2?) For all of these absolutely watch them before watching season 3 part 2 otherwise it'll be a bit disjointed

I totally agree, I love stories that start small in scope and gradually gets bigger. Gives you time to digest and get familiar with the material and then grows as the protagonist matures. It’s just a more relax and fun way to digest information and not make it feel like work. It’s one of the reasons I can’t get into the Malazan series, it just throws you into the story makes you follow multiple POV’s that don’t continue from book to book and it just feels like homework. Don’t get me wrong, I love a big and robust world but I need to like the story first to want to do mental gymnastics. Can’t wait to start Witch Hat Atelier since the way you talk about it makes me think of Ascendance of a Bookworm, that is ending very soon 😢. Love your insights

1:05 Iron Hammer?!? That translation is so off I thought you were talking about a later season episode.😅 11:46. There's a 2-Part OVA in between Seasons 1 & 2 called No Regrets that gives Levi's backstory on how he met Erwin and became a Scout. There were 5 bonus episodes released in between Seasons 1 and 2. Highly recommend Ilse's Notebook. The other 2: Sudden Visitor and Distress don't add much to the overall story other than character developments and anime trope stuff but they arre minutely given callbacks in season 3 like easter eggs. 12:45 That Scout patch Levi gave to Dieter was Petra's.

In the manga, the section of them returning after the female titan doesn't happen. Them throwing off the bodies is anime only. Though in this case i really like that the anime added that in there. Usually i'm not a fan of when they change the source material but this was a great addition! Really good episode of season 1! If Annie transformed underground she'd be trapped unable to escape. She's be buried in titan form and then captured. The reason Eren couldn't transform is becouse he didn't have the resolve. Which is an important part of it. He still couldn't believe that Annie was the female titan. It goes back to Armin and Annie's conversation about how no one is a good person to everyone. Well Eren doesn't see it that way, atleast in this moment. He views Annie as a "good person", so this isn't easy for him to comprehend. Hope you don't take this as a spoiler, they do heavily imply why Eren couldn't transform. The anime did change some more things here that i'm not a fan of and someone else in the comments also talked about this. In the manga Eren did transform after Armin and Mikasa went outside. He wasn't trapped under rubble. Some critisisms i've seen is that people think Armin and Mikasa was too mean to Eren, like they had no empathy for his struggle. Though again that didn't happen in the manga. Also he didn't turn into the fire mode that he was in. That is anime-only. Becouse AoT was the biggest show when it came out and the anime studio wanted to give it a climatic ending. Where as in the manga it was pointed out that Eren lost his first fight due to his rage and he had to be more strategic this time. Showing some development in the way he fought the second time. Also when Annie climbs the wall, they say that the 3D gear can't reach her. So Eren throws Mikasa up there, so that Mikasa can cut her fingers. Eren actually teams up with Mikasa here. In the anime Mikasa is just up there with no explanation. The fusion/merging power doesn't happen in the manga, that is anime-only. Just added in there for dramatic effect. Jean also wasn't here in the manga, he was headed to court disguised as Eren. I do like that they changed this, giving Jean some moments in this fight. Personally i think the first episode of AoT is still my favorite of season 1. I think if you rewatch it in sub you'd appreciate it more. The scout leader breaking down in front of the woman who lost her son. Eren's scream when his mom gets eaten. This is really haunting voice acting in the sub, that added much to these scenes. Top 2-5 would probably be Episode 22>16>21>5 I like that you also give the show some criticisms! AoT is my favorite series of all time and i've always liked to think of how my favorite series/games or whatever could be improved. How could something so good be even better? My 2 biggest criticisms of the show is how season 3 (first part) is handled in the anime. Not a fan of the things they changed from the manga, almost ruins this part for me. The second is that i would've liked atleast 1-2 more episodes of their cadet/military days. To expand on some of the other characters and their relationships. Like here with Eren and Annie, there could've been some more Annie scenes, so we'd understand why this was difficult for Eren. Also a bit more with Annie and Armin. More scenes with Marco, considering how much his death affected the others. We only heard about Marco and Armin tinkering with their 3D gear but we didn't see it. I feel like a lot hinges on their days in the military, so it's a shame we barely saw any of it. Last thing, as everyone else has said. You might wanna check out "Ilse's Notebook OVA" and "No Regrets OVA's". Before starting season 2. The first one is pretty relevant for season 2, the second one about Levi's backstory. There's some other OVA's too but they're not important for the show.

LONG COMMENT INBOUND! Just figured I'd note some differences between the anime and manga for Season 1. 1. In the manga Eren and Annie bond a little during training. After Eren uses her kicking move to discipline Jean, they're out in the training grounds watching how Jean is actually trying in the training as opposed to before where he would just slack off. Eren says it's a good thing but Annie tells him he's only doing it so he'll be able to pay Eren back for what he did. Eren then mentions how he copied her technique and then asks her how well he did, to which she brushes it off and says he wasn't even close. But then when he asks why she gives a genuine, soft smile, the only smile we see her give in the entire season (besides the creepy one when she's exposed). And she offers to teach Eren her technique and Eren quickly rejects her offer because he says it hurts too much. To which she says "Oh please I insist" and kicks him on his ass lmao. It's just a small interaction but one that I think really sells the dynamic between the 2 of them with Annie being the one who taught Eren how to fight before they eventually have to fight in their titan forms later on. As opposed to the anime where they only have 1 interaction which wasn't even friendly, and the anime really pushes Eren not wanting to believe it's Annie which feels a little forced. 2. In the manga Annie smiles when she's exposed instead of laughing. Isayama (the author) described the reasoning behind the smile/laugh as being a sudden release of emotions being let out, now that she no longer has to lie and hide herself like she had been doing. Isayama sent sketches to Wit Studio as to what they could do with Annie for this scene, since he believed a little smile wasn't cinematic enough for how big of a moment it was. So he sent sketches of her laughing while also breaking down crying, two very contradictory emotions that I think would've fit the scene better rather than the almost erotic blushing laugh in the anime which seemed more like what you'd expect from a typical anime yandere, rather than what the scene was so supposed to convey for Annie's character. 3. Eren doesn't hesitate to fight Annie in Stohess for very long in the manga. He has the initial hesitation in the tunnel where Mikasa gives him that death glare and asks him whether there's any special feelings holding him back. But then once Armin and Mikasa run out the tunnel to go fight Annie, when Eren asks how they can fight Mikasa says that they have no choice because the world is simply a cruel place. Which snaps Eren out of the dilemma he was in and he transforms into a titan right then, smashing out of the tunnel and punching Annie across the city. As opposed to the anime where you have an entire episode of Eren laying under rubble, not wanting to fight Annie. Which like I said earlier feels especially forced since the anime cut out their only friendly interaction. 4. Eren doesn't have that fiery rage mode titan in the manga. In the manga after Eren is beaten in hand to hand by Annie and briefly incapacitated, Annie overwhelmed by everything just begins to run away, not even attempting to bite Eren out of the nape and capture him, abandoning her mission and just wanting to go home to her father. She climbs the wall but Mikasa chops her down just like in the anime, and then when she falls Eren in full control pins her down while Scouts try to remove from the nape but she crystallizes before they can pull her out. That stuff where Eren and Annie started to merge for a second is also completely anime only and means nothing. I'm not a big fan of Eren's fiery rage mode in the anime, logically I know the reason it happened is because Araki (the director) and Wit Studio wanted a really cool climax fight scene for the final episode, especially since the manga wasn't much further ahead at the time, there wasn't enough content to begin working on a season 2 and because AoT was Wit Studio's first ever project there was no guarantee there'd ever be a season 2, so ending it off in the most explosive way possible makes a lot of sense from a marketing point of view. But I feel it really goes against Eren's character journey, in this very episode we're repeatedly told that Eren can't just beat Annie by being angry and passionate like he was in the forest. He needs to use his head and not just go off his emotions. Only to then completely contradict that by having Eren absolutely dominate Annie in the fight just by raging out in a very animalistic way. Eren's anger under Isayama's writing is consistently shown to be a character flaw and one that only hinders him when it comes to important moments, yet the anime rewards this by having him win against Annie by just getting even angrier than usual. It just all feels very cheap and cliché anime rage mode trope, I much prefer how the manga handles the whole confrontation with Annie in Stohess.

I’m so glad you’re enjoying this show so far and yes, Isayama had to make the first arc more flashy so his manga would keep going cause you know how brutal the manga business can be. So that’s why the more slower moments were later in the work. He def was writing having an ending on his mind, so yeah everything is gonna make sense eventually. For Levi’s backstory we have two episodes called “No regrets” which you can watch, and another called “Ilse’s notebook” for some titan lore. But those episodes are OVAs, they were released in between s1 and s2. Erwin is a fan favourite as well but Levi is more popular I guess. But my ultimate favourite character is Hange:) I hope you gonna love s2 even better!

I’m curious if you’d feel the same if you rewatched the first ten episodes with the sub. I will say that while I love the dub, I can see what you mean in your criticism of the direction. I do think it still works, but I will also say that there is a jump in quality in the second season as the voice actors are much later in their career and experience due to the time between releases. Anyways, looking forward to your thoughts on the rest of the series!

I agree, I do like Levi very much, but Erwin really is the best character in the show for me personally. Without getting into spoilers, maybe it was the fatigue of waiting so long for the story to end, but my love for the characters waned quite a bit in the later finale seasons and I started to get frustrated and nitpick their character flaws and writing maybe a bit too unfairly. But Erwin, I think he is perfectly written and the strongest character in the show till the end.

The Japanese voice acting industry is a lot more competitive than in the US so the ones that rise to the top are often better. Sometimes you can have an English dub which is great, but very seldom do they actually surpass the original casting, and often fall well below. My experience is almost always better with sub.
