((ANIME + MANGA SPOILERS)) - - - - - Omg, yes they are great characters. As Vinii stated, Reiner, Bertolt and Annie were literally pressured to do well for the Marley government, so in that case, it wasn't entirely their fault that they had to do what they needed to do. Yes, i know they killed thousands of people, but the Marley government were brainwashing with the fact that Paradis was full of demons and all that kinds of things so the trio were set in that mindset. And we know that we can't blame Marley as a whole for having a grudge against Eldians because Eldians were the ones who were wiping out Marley during Ymir Fritz (not the one that Historia knows)/Great Titan War times... As I got further into the show, I concluded that it's hard to pick a side, even though both sides did good and bad things... Reiner was like a big brother to the 104th corps, Bertolt (in s2) was about to save Connie, Reiner, and Historia when the tower was about to fall (if you look closely, there is a small scene where you can see that he was about to bite his hand in order to transform and save all of them, even though he is risking his titan identity), and Annie was upset and emotional when her friend died during the Trost arc. It shows that AOT was such a cruel world for these kids to be living in.... :((((

Isayama truly showed how perspective really shapes how you view something, and I found myself really judging characters I shouldn't have judged as hard based on what they've been through. But I couldn't help it. Honestly, it scared me. MANGA SPOILER AHEAD: Eren did the exact same thing Reiner, Bertoldt and Annie did to them. Eren killed thousands of innocent people in Marley for a cause he felt was justified. We see how it's wrong, but we understand why he does it, so I couldn't hate him for it. Come in Gabbie - the representation of a young Eren. Eren destroyed her city, killed her friends and everything she knows and cares about. After what she's been taught to believe since birth, and after what Eren did to her city, its obvious why she holds such disdain to people of Paradise. But I still found myself unable to forgive her. I hated how naive and ignorant she was. She didn't understand, and I hated that. If we had started with Reiner, Annie and Bertoldt's perspective from the very beginning, would I have hated Eren as well? Would I have felt more sorry about Bertoldt getting eaten by Armin? Would I have been more comfortable with Annie killing all those soldiers to get to Eren in the forest? I think about this all the time, and its amazing how fast feelings can be manipulated when you start off believing one side, and how hard it is to change when you suddenly see the other.
@deltasigma88174 жыл бұрын
And this is why Attack on Titan is one of my favorite series of all time. I watched AoT from the first episode released and I held off on reading the manga up until the last episode of Season 3 P1 dropped. I had spent literal years hating Annie and then later Bertoldt and Reiner after they were revealed and we saw what they were responsible for. After picking up the manga, which had just ended the Marley Arc at the time, I finally got to see what they had been through and what their perspective on the situation was. It completely changed my perspective on not only the characters of the story but how I actually approach analyzing and evaluating characters in different stories and even people in real life. I didn't end up hating Gabi as much as most people seemed to because I guess I caught on to her role as a parallel to early Eren pretty quickly and adjusted my expectations of her pretty soon after. But I doubt I'd have been able to do that without the setup done with Annie, Reiner, and Bertoldt. Hell, at this point in the story with the manga I don't even know who to root for. Watching the reactions that people had when the second half of Season 3 aired, especially the amount of people that cheered on Bertoldt's death, really solidified for me the genius of the approach that was taken for the story to get to this point. Isayama puts you in a difficult position were you start rooting for one side and then makes you have to wrestle with yourself later on if that is the right choice. It really speaks to humanity's inherent hate of change and the biases we have from the initial perspectives of situations.

The ironic thing, based off your thumbnail, is that there truly is no valid morality or perspective that can justify feeding an innocent child to dogs for fun - all based on her race. To me this shows that, as grey as the morality can be at times, there are is such as an act that is objectively evil and wrong. Using it as Eren/Grisha's motivation for their morally grey actions is genius. Because, after witnessing and being the victim to such a horrific crime/experience - can you blame them for their actions? I think an important part of perspective and morality is knowing that there sometimes really are decisions that are wrong on all fronts.
@prodkomba4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree, I think there are factors that lead to our perception of right and wrong, such as harm, pain, etc... There's a reason why what Hitler did was wrong, he tortured people and killed them by the millions because of their ethnicity, something they can't control. And although he may have felt justified in his actions, that doesn't mean he is right just because he believes himself to be. Take colours for example, the 'best' colour is a matter of opinion, it's subjective - purple is both the best and worst colour depending on who you ask. I don't see morality in the same way because a person can be incorrect when calling an event immoral or moral, whereas with colours, you can't argue at all against someone's favourite colour. What happened to Grisha's sister is objectively immoral, she was killed in a horrific manner simply for being curious and wanting to see a blimp, she didn't do any immoral action(s) to justify such a cruel death.
@Snzn_74 жыл бұрын
@@prodkomba what happened to grisha's sister exactly how perspective shows morality of that marleyan soldier, Like what his predecesor did He too showed his sons that they can just feed a random eldian without remorse or repercussion which ingrain that too his marleyan children that those action is not immoral (at least for them) of course we viewing the whole situation knows that is immoral but for those characters its not thats just a norm. Its like culling chickens for food, it is imbibed to us that it is a norm so we in majority don't feel remorse for taking chicken lives, but for some child which such act hasn't still been imbued to them will cry and feel remorse from seeing such act. The act is generally injustifiable but still can be morally acceptable or at least tolerable depending on the perspective. That is what my take at least on this. Well I could be wrong
@Chook1814 жыл бұрын
@@Snzn_7 While I do sympathise with what you're saying that from the Marleyan perspective, they see it as "normal" but I actually argue that isn't the case. Gross HID what he did. He covered it up. He KNOWS it's wrong and lied to everyone involved. Sure, the government backed him because of corruption, but that shows how the system backs him as an oppresor. His actions were never morally grey, because by covering it up, he is admitting he did the wrong thing. The biggest fault is that the system (Marley's government) actually allowed this to happen and supported him (even if it wasn't openly) I think what you're saying can make sense, like, Reiner and Bert and Annie all collectively killed tens of thousands of people with their actions. But they can't be held responsible - they didn't truly understand on ANY level what they were doing is wrong. Much like how we dont want to think about how every meal we eat cost a living being a life of torture. (though lots of people do face that fact. I try not to, because I like chicken way too much) So I think your point is valid, just not for Gross and his actions imo

@@prodkomba Totally agree. There is no reason or justification to kill someone like that. Even if she had done something wrong, having her mauled to death for almost any reason is so wrong. He breaks down and even gives up on life because everything he fought for was a lie and now it hitting him, unlike Bert he had to deal with his actions for years driving him to lose all hope to live. Reiner is a good guy who just find out he killed thousands of innocent people and what worst it was all for nothing, this adding on to the fact that he was a kid makes it all the worse. Reiner who only had one dream which was become a hero is now just another villain in his eyes, that truly a sad fate for anyone not counting again he was just a kid.

I never thought Eren killing those kidnappers was wrong. Its possible to place yourselves in others shoes and see from their perspective before judging them. Empathy is actually genetic just like intelligence and other things. The amount varies between people, with different groups having different amounts. So yes some people are just evil and some groups more evil than others.

That is relative as well tho. Certain societies perceive certain things in a vastly different manner than others. For example the age of consent in some countries is as low as 12 or 14 while in others it is 18.

Eren and Mikasa killed those men in rightfulll self defense. We cant blame them for that because if they didnt do it they would die/be sold as slaves. But there is an extra layer to this scene. After the killing, Eren shows no regrets. Which is weird for a child, as even adult soldiers have PTSD from killing other people. Is self defense a complete moral justification for killing others? This same question comes back at the ending of the manga, considering the current actions Eren has taken. As someone said, It is always easy to judge others when it doesnt have anything to do with us. But the moment we put ourselves in the shoes of the killer, and the killed, then we can start to get that its not that simple

I don't think AoT is saying morality comes down to perspective. In fact, I think it is a critique of that view. So much death and destruction occurs precisely because people on both sides think that it comes down to their perspective vs. the others', without realizing this could all be avoided if they took an objective third-person perspective instead.

This kind of understanding is what often missing from today's discussions on societal issues. Everything is set up as "Us vs them" and "You either with us or against us" mentality. No one wants to entertain the thought that the other side can have a point or maybe even be right. Because if world followed the long term kind of thinking "World without armed conflict, world of plenty for everyone" then the world and peace would not be crashing down today.

In my opinion most people in attack on titan (being characters addressed by the story) are both good and evil. as they are pursuing a goal that in their mind is righteous they are good and are the protagonist of their own story . They are also evil as they do things they know are immoral without remorse and that makes them the antagonist of someone else's story. For example the people that killed mikasa's parents planned on selling mikasa and her mum they could of had families they needed to feed .they could be considered good for providing for their family (a righteous cause )but evil for selling people ( an immoral act) in their story eren and mikasa are the antagonist as their leaving their families without food. To summarise the main characters are evil for killing but good because it's for what they view as a righteous cause . Sidenote the only people who are morally clear are the pure titans who were forced into becoming titans and have no control. PS in the case of marleyans and eldians from marley I don't consider them evil as they dont know it's wrong as they were brainwashed from birth.

The good and evil is subjective as u said people who were born in marley think that the eldians are evil and shit because their government said so and they teach this to their kids and fill them with hate towards eldians so when ever they hear something about eldians their minds immediately identify them as the "ENEMY" , now what isayama did with the warriors (annie , reiner , bertholdt ) was a pretty fucking good job , the thoughts and Emotions of the three characters are conflicted asf , ( WARNING: SPOILERS FROM THE UPCOMING SEASON 4 ): now when eren travels across the ocean and live with people in marley he felt what reiner and the warriors felt , both sides live their lives thinking the other side is the "ENEMY" but in reality they're just people who didn't have enough facts about the other side ............ this is a real issue in our world too world wars are the greatest example there are soldiers who killed good people bcs they were told to they didn't think when the kill they just did it the soldiers always do the thinking after they've done their mission , most of them are brain-washed just like the warriors

Attack on titan is truly the best anime.
@thepsalmist46774 жыл бұрын
That’s why I enjoy the anime. It deals with metaethics in a way which pushes the proverbial envelope and captures the morality which belies modernity and polite society. With the abolition of Aristotelian-Thomistic ontological ethics and with the disenchantment and secularization of day to day life, one can’t help but slide into a Nietzschean perception of truth and morality. Attack on Titan has an absolute treasure trove of ways to analyze it as well. The meta-narrative commentary on the sterility of modern politics, the contrast between Armin and Eren as characters, the meta-critique of the shounen character archetypes of a hero being communicated through the narrative and seeing Eren become the antagonist-and a quite monstrous one at that-and the morality of the entire franchise makes you stop and begin to genuinely contemplate why things are right and why things are wrong. We can see this most clearly in the most recent panels of the manga. When Armin reaches out to Eren through the Paths, he appeals to reason. He dialogues with Eren thinking they both agree that there exists a truth outside of themselves and that one of them can bring the other closer to it, or align with it themselves. But Eren flatly rejects the dialectic and poses the challenge that every person who rejects an objective truth must, one day, wrestle with. “We both have our convictions. The time for conversation has passed. You can either use your freedom to oppose me, or you can choose to not oppose me. But if you oppose me, if you want to stop me, you’re going to have to kill me.” I think, for us Americans, we can see this polarization in a very real, very scary way. The relativism of truth, and, therefore, the untruth of reality is something which causes dread in people who contemplate its implications in a serious way. And this is where the anime has reached its zenith. It shows, unashamedly, the implications of a world with no truth and a world which has no truth outside of the subjects’ hermeneutic, or interpretation of it. I’m a Catholic, so I’m in obvious disagreement with the show and its post-Enlightenment precepts of metaethics. Morality is not based on mere perspective. Though, I do not think one needs to be in agreement with the underlying philosophy and theme of the show in order to recognize it as one of the best pieces of art in several decades. Attack on Titan is becoming for this generation what Neon Genesis Evangelion was for Millennials. It is superb and I could not recommend it enough, though I do suggests forming your conscience beforehand. Reading Aristotle might be good as well, LOL. I feel it would be fitting to quote from a notorious piece of fascistic political theory which will further illustrate that this moral relativism always precipitates genocide. Mussolini’s *Diuturna*. He wrote: “Everything I have said and done in these last years is relativism by intuition...If relativism signifies contempt for fixed categories and men who claim to be the bearers of an objective, immortal truth...then there is nothing more relativistic than fascistic attitudes and activities...From the fact that all ideologies are of equal value, that all ideologies are mere fictions, the modern relativist infers that everybody has the right to create for himself his own ideology and attempt to enforce it with all of the energy of which he is capable.” This is from pages 374-77. Instead of running away from relativism and the phantoms of Nietzsche, Stirner, Marx, Evola, and all of the other post-Enlightenment philosophers whose philosophies wiped out our moral groundwork and first principles, we should take a moment to look them in the eyes. We should question. We should read more, live more, and always be searching for the truth. Our end as human beings is not to attain some grand goal, or to shake the world, or to be remembered. Our goal is to find the truth and live in accord with this truth even if we die trying. I think Attack on Titan communicates this end better than any apologist ever could.

@@arnavdixit1397 I'm pretty sure the excessiveness doesn't change whether or not it was self defense. You could argue that it was warranted to ensure that the enemy was dead, because, if he didn't stab him enough, he might have gotten back up and killed Eren. When you're put in a life-or-death situation, there's no such thing as an over-the-top action/precaution. It's not like he was smiling while doing it, or killed him with a nonchalant attitude (like how the actual murderers killed Mikasa's mother)& that's what separates "murder" from "self defense".

Perspective has always been a part of AOT, when it comes to the ending it isn’t one that I wanted, it’s one that I felt I needed.
@hunggamerofficial32524 жыл бұрын
To be honest, i'm so fed up with the "Perspective" kind of thing. Here's why. 1.Grisha Yeager's little sister did not commit any sins, yet she was fed to the dogs just because she is Eldian. That ACTION of Sergean Gross proved that he is EVIL. He is EVIL not because of anybody's perspectives, but by his action of killing an innocent little girl. Gross did not do the bad thing to "Protect" anybody either. He just did that because he loved doing that. 2.Eren Kruger's actions are the complicated one. He killed his own people, but also thanks to him, Grisha was able to infiltrate the wall on Paradis island. Therefore, Eren Kruger did the bad things for the sake of the greater good. With this man, whether he is "Evil" or not, that depends on "Perspective" because eventually, what Kruger did was always for the good of Eldia, not for himself. 3.In case of Reiner, Bertholdt, and Annie, those three are not really black and white either. But, in return, when it is the turn of Jean, Connie, even Armin, they did not just rush in and kill the Azumabito(Hope that i got their names right) just to get to Floch. And they know about the Eldians after the King of Paradis was toppled. What did that means? That means, even when the situation forced Jean, Connie and Armin to kill people, they only do that if it actually saves someone. Like when Armin shot a woman to save Jean, Connie wanted his mom back but still saved Falco. Erwin sacrificed the recruits in order for Levi to beat the crap out of the Beast Titan. On the contrary, Annie, Bertholdt, and especially Reiner's actions did not save anyone. Not only that, they even brought the Threats from Paradis island to their homes, the Liberio Interment Zone. Do i even have to see from any "Perspectives" to know that clearly, the actions of the three of them were not only bad, they were terrible as well? And don't even get me started with Zeke, the guy is the total bastard who betrayed his own home, his own people, but still tries to defend for shit. => What do these mean? They mean that, Good and Bad are not "Subjective", they are Objective, based on the Large Scales and the Big Pictures. If one person, like Gross, kills a little girl just for sake of enjoying people getting eaten, that is BAD, by his own Actions, and his own selfish reasons. You don't have to ask for "Perspective" to know that it is clearly bad. Eren Kruger sacrificed many Eldians, to find someone(It's Grisha) to inherit his mission for him, then despite all the bad things he did, he did that not for his selfish reasons, but for his home, his country. Just...stop using the word "Perspective" as an escape goat for everything. There are many things that can be Objective, not just one thing. Just because you can't prove them yet, does not mean Objective Truth does not exist.

Armin even talked about this. He told Annie how he doesn't like the word "good person" since a person maybe "good" for someone and "bad" for others. Someone can do something good for you but it can be a bad thing in another one's perspective which he then follows saying that a single person can't possibly be "good" in everyone's eyes.
