Also, an answer to the question as to why they couldn't just both leave is that, as far as the owl knows, you can only get to the walls unharmed if you posess a titan. As a normal human you'd probably just get eaten. There might be a chance that an experienced titan shifter could protect another human from titans but the risk of getting eaten by titans is still higher, grisha is unexperienced and eren kruger probably didn't want to endanger the mission.

Response to Editing Lia asking why the owl couldn't save both Dina and Grisha. Everyone initially has this question but the answer is pretty obvious, there was no point in saving her. For this plan he only needed Grisha and Dina would just be a hinderence moving forward, in his journey to the walls and in his mission afterwards. Furthermore, I believe he wasn't even sure whether to do it or not till the last moment he pushed the officer off the wall.

The only reason I can think of as to why the owl didn't save Dina, or the other Restoranists is that sneaking that many people into the walls would have been impossible, Grisha was extremely lucky to get inside without being reported to the Military Police. There's also only one person the Owl can make a titan. There's still hundreds of titans between the sea and the walls, those titans would be attracted to any humans in the area, and any titan shifters. Grisha has never even used a titan before, getting there on his own was difficult enough nevermind trying to protect Dina or his comrades aswell.

That final scene is one of my fav of the whole series. It comes out of nowhere, leaves you confused and the ost playing makes it so awesome. I wonder how many teories were made when this first came out in the manga
@edwardlwittlif4 ай бұрын
OG Manga reader here- a *million* theories! It sent so many people down theorycrafting rabbit holes, including readers who didn't normally dip into that realm. I remember so many people making memes and jokes about the idea of paths, too. Many of the theories were wrong, of course, but a few of them were on the right track, generally speaking. It was an especially exciting time to be reading the manga. [Spoilers below] The theory I found strongest at the time was that Eren's access to Grisha's memories was unreliable. In other words, I thought Eren was unintentionally revising the memories in his head, adding his own details and interpretations, which would imply we couldn't trust everything we'd just seen in that huge lore drop. I thought that was the strongest theory, but I hoped one of the more popular and crazier "memories traveling from the future" theories would turn out to be true instead, because that would be more interesting. And Isayama delivered.
@Thatscrazybro1l4 ай бұрын
@@edwardlwittlif Did anyone figure it out tho?
@edwardlwittlif4 ай бұрын
@@Thatscrazybro1l [Spoilers] Well, it's possible somebody got it *exactly* right, but I don't remember that happening. When I say there were people who were on the right track about the Attack Titan, I mean there were a lot of theories based on the idea that the Attack Titan can see the future through the paths, which is accurate. But puzzle pieces like Ymir being an eternal servant, Zeke's sterilization plan, Zeke trying to convert Eren to his plan- we didn't have those details at the time and people weren't guessing them, either. In my opinion, a theory truly *figuring it out* with the info we had at that time in the manga would read something like, "I think Eren is going to take control of the paths in a way that he can use his will to guide previous incarnations of the Attack Titan," and as far as I can recall, nobody was putting that theory forward at the time. Theory crafters did get some notable things right. Not long after Chapter 47, when Bertholdt asked Ymir if she remembered eating Marcel, people deduced that eating a shifter as a pure titan would grant you the shifter's power, and a theory that Eren ate his father emerged soon after, although that theory used to be *very* controversial. It took more than a year for the manga to confirm that theory was true.

That's correct, the reason Ymir decided to go with Reiner and Bertolt is so they don't get replaced when they go back to Marley empty handed, her being a titan makes it valuable enough, so that's why they decided to return, so yes, once they are in Marley, they sacrificed Ymir and stole her titan to one of the other warriors, just like Reiner and Bertolt got theirs.

The reason The owl didn't save Dina isn't ever made clear and is kind of a minor plot hole or rather a "motivation hole" if you will. However later on in the show it is essentially of solved. My rational when originally watching the episode was that The owl wasn't sure if he was gonna save grisha and let him inherit his titan yet. He might have been considering it but wasn't fully on board until grisha recognized the other officer and was reminded of his sister's death. My guess is that is when The Owl decided he was gonna save him. But that's just my personal theory.

@sgcastle83894 ай бұрын
It's not even plot here, the logic is the same as why he didn't save the others. Only a titan could travel from their location to the walls without getting killed by other mindless titans. He had to chose between Grisha or Dina. He picked Grisha
@loco_logic4 ай бұрын
I agree with your interpretation. It's never really explained why, and Kruger letting the others die like that doesn't really make sense with his overall motivations and goals. But like you said, the only thing that makes sense is if Kruger was originally going to let ALL of the restorationists die, including Grisha. He then wavered back and forth about saving Grisha to inherit the Attack Titan, before eventually fully commiting at the very, very, very last possible second. Then from there he gave his newly improvised mission to Grisha.

So when you first start watching the show, you think it's about humans defending against the titans. But this episode, we learn that the show is about Eren, the main character. I think the answer is for two reasons, one for Eren's mom to get eaten to create this determination to wipe out the titans and two is to remember the smiling titan she was eaten by and when the time came in a near fatal situation, Eren activated the founding titans abilities from touching someone with royal blood.
@gibinas84663 ай бұрын
The owl allowed Dina to die because she had Royal blood. The Vow Renouncing war is only effective to Royal Bloods who posses the founding titan. That means, Marley can claim the founding titan and use a royal blood as a shell to store it (it will not fight!). The owl wanted Grisha to take founding titan so someone non-royal can posses it, thus ALLOWING RETALIATION. And even if Marley gets the founding, Dina was the last of royal blood to use (unless Zeke confess). So still, they will store it to non royal who can abuse the founding power anytime. I HOPE THAT HELPS

[No Spoilers] "Why didn't the Owl save Dina" is a common question for viewers and there *is not* a definitive answer stated outright in the series. As you learn more about the story, there are more theories that you can come up with. But with what you know right now in the story, the best theory is just that it would not be logistically viable to save two people. We know that the first titan transformations are hard to control (recall when Eren punched Mikasa as a titan) but even if you could successfully carry a second human to the wall, how do you get both people inside? With one person, "I have amnesia" is plausible. But two people who BOTH have amnesia is much harder to believe and much likelier to draw suspicion. So all things considered, it made the most sense to save only one person, and the person the Owl chose was Grisha.

Eren looked so tired and just hollow this episode. It's such a far cry to how he was in S1 when he had so much energy and passion in everything he did. Goes to show even more how much he's been through in these 4 months, and how tired he is at this point. Having to relive memories of people with tragic pasts and dealing with the fact that he only has a few years to live now certainly doesn't help. Loved what they did with Ymir's letter scene since this was originally where her backstory (2x10) was going to be shown. The name reveal of the Attack Titan was also fantastic! To answer your question as to why Kruger didn't save Dina: It is VERY hard to reach the Walls all the way from the sea. It was addressed in Season 2 when Reiner & Bert had Eren hostage in those massive trees. Eren doubted whether he would even be able to run away in his titan form or just be overpowered by all the mindless titans out in the wild. Plus if Dina was left alive you can bet Grisha would value her safety over his own rather than focussing on himself and the mission, which could lead to them both getting eaten. Kruger doesn't want the mission to be jeopardized so he only kept Grisha alive, the only one who would have the titan powers to actually reach the wall by themself.

7:47 Maybe it's because there's only one titan that can be inherited, and it'll be too difficult for her to make it to the walls let alone continue the mission. And maybe for the same reason he didn't save the others, Grisha was the one he chose as the best candidate, so there was nothing he could really do to help since they'll probably not survive long here anyway (they do all have their fingers cut off). Also, I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned by now so I don't think I'm spoiling, Dina having royal blood also means it'd be impossible for her to complete the mission since once she gets the Founding Titan she'd just be taken over by the will of that one king that brought everyone into the walls in the first place
@chrislu714 ай бұрын
One of the reasons why Kruger didnt save Dina is the same reason why they didnt try splitting the syringe for Armin and Erwin, they only had one titan shifter to eat. The other would have to remain a pure titan or die right there. Also, if Dina was saved what life would she have been able to go back to? The boat was destroyed but its not like she could have gone back to Marley anyways. She had no fingers and without becoming a titan she couldnt grow them back. The only path forward for her if she was saved was to risk getting to the walls with Grisha on his first transformation. And lastly, what Kruger kinda leaves unsaid here; he says he trusted the mission to Grisha and no one else. He might have thought it was too much of a risk to send the pair of them into the walls together to complete the mission... especially since he knows he is going to die right there and only Grisha will have his memories to guide them.

"Why didn't the Owl save both Grisha and Dina" Good question. That's something I asked myself immediately after watching this episode. Of course, I learned the answer way later on in Season 4 so yes they DO answer why. But even in the current circumstance, Dina AND Grisha both making it to the wall may have posed a ton of problems. It's one thing for one person to find themselves outside the wall with amnesia, but to find TWO of them? Dina is also a royal, so the king at the time (Uri Reiss), would probably immediately know what's up with some Paths shit. Isayama could have, at the time, avoided that even larger plothole by just Titanizing Dina Fritz instead.

I made sure to not include any spoilers in this comment for you guys The owl sacrifices Dina for the cause of retaking the founding titan because he entrusts the future of this cause to Grisha. He believes Grisha will accomplish this mission due to the trauma he endured when his sister was murder. Basically he is putting his faith in Grisha painful experience to finish what he started but its was made them both revolutionaries. This painful experience is what binds Grisha Yeager to Eren Kruger, since Eren Kruger parents were killed in front of him, he continued on with his revolutionary beliefs despite making very little difference in their cause (all he accomplished throughout his 13 years is severing fingers from other Eldians). Eren Kruger is a Cynical character who would rather put his faith in other people pain instead of their decency. Letting Dina die is simply adding more fuel to that painful experience. As far as practicality about why he let her die, its simply he decided to not save her for his belief because he has done this countless times.

And you have to protect her from titans, until you go to the walls. Even if they keep her identity secret on the Island. It's still dangerous that She stay alive and Can be an obstacle to Grisha's mission. She Can notice plot holes, but you have to think by yourself with the information you have. And she didn't. There IS another reason that will be revealed later. But the reason for this was already answeared. The author shouldn't have to hold hands for people to understand.

If they allow Dina to live, Eren wouldn't have been born. Ofcourse, Grisha wouldn't marry Carla. The reason why it has to be done like this will be a spoiler and better be discovered in the episodes of season 4.

I figured it all out. Eren Kruger is Eren Yeager, Grisha is Mikasa, and Dina is Armin! /sarcasm

7:47 Well the actual answer is a huge spoiler so i wont answer that part, but I'll answer what i can based on the information given so far: To put it simple, the Owl is risking so much right now. He knows that his successor will be Grisha and only him. So he must do whatever he can in order to protect him. He cant protect both of them. He could only save Grisha because he was the one responsable for turning him into a titan and then gave the excuse that he wanted to ask him some questions before injecting him. Someone else was in charge of turning Dina, if he would've stepped in to save her as well it would've been too suspicious, or the other guy would've turned Grisha then instead, since it would seem Kruger was done interrogating Grisha. So, to conclude, he couldn't save Dina because it would've been too sus given that there were a lot of guards around wheb Dina was brought, and he knew he had to save Grisha so he sacrificed her so the enemy won't exploit her. That's my explanation for this right now. There's one part that I cant answer right now, but if you know, you know 😉

Think there might be a subtitle issue so not positive but I think the line "To save Mikasa and Armin" is said by Grisha to Eren when Eren transforms for the second time (to block the cannon ball in episode 9). Wibbly wobbly, timey wimey shit going on here.

Yup. Kruger’s words get used three times in this series. By Grisha, by Kruger himself, and used again later

why they can't save more people including his friends if Eren Kruger turned into a titan earlier? It's not explicitly explained but I also believe it would be difficult to sneak into the walls and live a life if there were more than 1 person. Just Grisha himself, it's possible if he feigned memory loss. But 2 or more people? The military would for sure be asking questions.

To answers the question only a titan would be able to make the trip from the from their location to the walls without getting killed by others titans around. Kruger would've died so he can only save one person by giving him his power the others will all die.

Kruger let Dina die because she was too important to be kept alive. If at any point Marley gets their hands on her, they gain access to a near infinite supply of royal blood (by turning her into a baby factory). Reminder that Marley's goal is to steal and use the Founding Titan. Right now, they have a plan to steal it (using the Warriors). But they have no plan on how to use it, because they can only use it with royal blood, which they don't have access to (reminder that they don't know about the Vow Renouncing War, only the Restorationists know about it). Dina completes the other half of their plan. This is a man who spent years killing his own people for the mission. Killing one more, even if it was someone with royal blood, is par for the course.

I suppose it's possible The Owl/Eren Kruger COULD have acted sooner to save both Grisha AND Dinah, and no real reason is given in-story for why he didn't. So chalk it up to reasons of "Plot Necessity" or "Plot Convenience," IF Dinah HADN'T been a Pure/Mindless Titan (of Royal Blood, still) in S2, the Scouts and everyone would've died during the "Rescue Eren" Mission. It's when Eren touched her with his punch that his ability to unlock and use The Coordinate/Founding Titan power to command and summon Pure/Mindless Titans to their defense manifested itself. At 10:01 Edit: Yes, you have the right of it, pretty much. The "who" will be revealed in S4. Notice Freida Reiss' eyes around 12:53 (ish); they're naturally light blue, but when she's "possessed" by The Will of The 1st King of The Walls (who renounced violence), they turn violet. You'll see this again in a real mind-screw episode in S4. ETA: IMO Historia doesn't need to be a Titan for Eren's touch to unlock his Founding Titan ability. She's of Royal Blood, so that's all that's needed: touch. What if he touches Zeke? Interesting. VERY interesting....maybe S4 will answer that question.... ETA Again: Imagine, years from now, Eren comes home and says "DAD! Meet my new friend! His name's Armin!" Just imagine the "WTF/OMG?" moment Grisha has That Day... And then as a physician, he meets a young couple, and the wife's pregnant, and they tell him, "If it's a girl, we'll name her Mikasa..."

10:14 - Ever play the hot/cold game? Hint: Really hot with that observation. Also why didn't Eren Kruger/The Owl save Dina as well? Well the answer is simply...It's a fucked up world and shit just happens. I'm sure The Owl had a plan of sorts but he couldn't control what was happening at that moment in order to PERFECTLY pull out a win by saving both Grisha and Dina. Especially if you consider the logistics of having to pass on information to Grisha, pass on his Titan to him while ensuring that he had a opportunity to kill any survivors without risking the lives of Grisha or Dina. Lastly, Dina isn't technically dead when she's turned into a Titan. Sure she is trapped in a waking nightmare but she isn't technically dead. She was put into "Pure Titan Storage" which is still better then being dead or turned over to the Marleyeans. Also the Owl didn't know that Eren would end up killing her in Season 2 because that's a future event.

the Attack Titan's inheritors have the ability to see the memories of the Titan's future and past inheritors. thats why Eren Kruger saw a glimpse of eren's memories. and there is a reason Kruger let dina become a titan, imma leave it at that.
