Also...remember that they spent a great deal of time abroad...most of thier money funneled into funding Evie's research. having a large standing support staff when they JUST GOT BACK would be a bit silly. there was probably a groundskeeper who, if he was lucky, stayed home that night and did not encounter the armed assasins on the grounds.

Oconnell is a badass don’t forget that, he walks into an unwinnable situation and knows it from experience. So he improvises until the situation deteriorates and then he acts. Perhaps the younger oconnell would have impulsively attacked and utilized stealth but now he is older, a family man and his family is threatened. Having a family oriented mans family under threat always defangs them no matter how vicious they may be otherwise, taking them away from them however gives them more resolve than before humanly possible. That’s my interpretation atleast
