Attaining Transformation

Is it only possible to attain transformation by Guru’s grace or does one require one’s own effort? Someone asked Ramakrishna Paramahamsa that is not possible to get what you want without a guru? There was a steamer in the Ganges and a small boat was tied to it. Ramakrishna said that look at that small boat. It can go across on its own too but with the steamer, its speed has increased. It is moving effortlessly because it is tied to the steamer. Your own effort makes a big difference because if your guru is thousands volts and you are just ten volts then you are not prepared to handle thousand volts and you will blast. Preparation is the key. You will have to do the preparation yourself. Yes, you can have the guidance from the guru but you have to put the effort yourself. The guru can show you a shorter path to choose and you will get to where you want to go.
Your effort, the guru and the grace when these three things fall in place is when something materializes. All three things are necessary. We cannot say Guru will do everything. Sri Krishna says if God is doing everything then you are ignorant because if god could do everything you won’t be sitting here. The fact is you have to do the action.

Thank you very much Om Swami. The necessity of a guru or mentor or a coach is indispensable though a very few people understand the need or are able to have the guidance of one. What a beautiful explanation - the amalgamation of own effort, divine and Guru, brings about true understanding. Warm regards.
