I enjoyed this episode. Very charming old towns however; it was not a wedding you came across. It was a "Quinceñra" traditional hispanic celebration of a young girl turning 15 years old and goes from child to womanhood. I thought I'd put my two cents worth for those who do not know hispanic customs.

I think if the dress is pink or purple it means Quinceañera, like sweet sixteen in the USA. If her dress is white means it’s a wedding. You can also tell by the age of the lady, although sometimes this is a bit more tricky.

@@rogermty1971 No not really, a big part of the Netherlands was reformed to a protestant believe system 4, 5 century’s ago and they where very ‘strickt’ in there believe of how to be a good Christian. Celebrations like this did not fit in their views. Maybe in the south/east part some tradition’s survived, however I have no notion of this. You can give sixteenth birthday extra weight, but that’s equal to both sexes.

I traveled to Guatemala once and I can honestly say the people are VERY kind and welcoming. It seemed that I made new friends everywhere I visited. I remember one morning being awaken at the crack of dawn by a group of four musicians serenading me outside my window. It was the first time I've ever been serenaded in that fashion. Most memorable trip of my life.

That cathedral you explored is about 4 blocks from where I am living now with a Mayan family that bailed me out of the hospital after a bike accident, brain surgery and two strokes...when I was in the hospital with two strokes and paralyzed so I could not move my arms or hands, the grand mother there age 92 prayed for me and the next morning I awoke able to move my hands and fingers normally... that was in January 2021... I am 81 years old...ThI am about 90% recovered now. And helping them build a business. I visited the same cathedral about this time last year when I was still using a walker. I have a retirement visa here. It is nice to know that we crossed paths.... earlier I lived for 3 years in Panajachel at Lago Atitlan... Santander street is the main drag there, the Kitch Cafe is where a few expats hang out. it is one block from its intersection with highway 1 as it passes through Panajachel. The high speed launches that cross the lake to several of the small towns on the other side are best taken in the AM before the water gets rough and pounds dangerously on your back if you are not sitting near the back of the boat. There is a good sushi bar next to the chinese restaurant about half way down Santander st on your right. Phil Scott, retired flat tracker from California 96e 500cc triumph, 360 Bultaco

@@Asdfghjkl1234 Thanks, about 30 years ago, I was living in Houston doing petrochemical engineering projects and took a trip to Durango on highway 37 I think. Driving into sun with the mesquite and sage brush, bleached out white cow skulls...redish brown dust on the horizon....and the spirit of a vastness far beyond this world. I have forgotten the name of the town about half way to Duango.. straight out of the 1950s...it was an intergral part of vibe... every single soul was from the 1950's.. even the dust was from the 1950's...painted...like president Truman browns red and yellow, the soda fountain had some white and blue, chrome and red spin around stools...then coming out of that town I was noticing the empty space between things... only the empty space... and the space between my thoughts... and I cried, and I noticed the gaps of silence between the sounds...only the gaps.. exclusive of the items... just the gaps and I left my body. When I arrived in Durango it was on a dirt road as I recall worn into the ground about 4 feet with weathered board walk on my left and a general store and saloon with dust covered windows and no paint and above a weathered balcony with curtains blowing out of the windows.... the ghosts of the ladies that stood up there waving at the cowboys were still there. On the right was yellow and red Mexican restaurant, it was dark inside probably to save on electricity...I was the only customer with a worn silent waitress... the tables had seen 10.2 million plates of beans, eggs and tortillas..she had suffered. But silent now.... like the ladies on the balcony across the street (there is no end to this sentence) Except for yourself who has reminded me of this. Muchas Gracias Phil Scott

@@Phil_Scott Mr. Scott- you captivate me with your writing. I am currently visiting in Durango. Love it here. Many places still just as you described them. You find yourself and hone your life purpose in these places a bit more and a bit at a time. My mother is from Santa Barbara, Chihuahua and father from Guanacevi, Durango - he was a Brazero, picking crops in Texas, NM, Arizona and Colorado during the late 50s and early 60s. He was born in 1933. After they married in Durango, they moved to Juarez where I was born. I grew in the Chicago area and had the good fortune of studying in a mathematics and science academy in France while in high school - I paid for that on my own by working construction in the summers thereafter. With my wife we’ve prioritized traveling over other things - a personal choice - we loved Guatemala. I did Tijuana to Cabo on motorcycle a few years back and have not turned back. I have my africa Twin waiting for me in my garage in Chicago - but has been in the 30-40s F still these weeks. I hope to ride up to Alaska and down through Latin America in coming years. I love the fact that you’re still using “real” paper maps. There’s nothing like having a hard copy map when you’re traveling in the field. The cobblestone streets, old building walls, and the volcano looming in the distance at Antigua reminds me of the excavations at Pompei, Italy with Vesuvius staring down on the city.

You are soooi right!!! I want to spread out a paper map, and with a magnifying glass in one hand , I am able to see the whole picture with various routes, towns in relation to each other, and other geographical features that are not easily discernible on a cell phone screen or gps unit. I want to see the "big picture" so that I can scrutinize all the details that is hard to do by screen graphics.

Antigua Guatemala is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so it is actually forbidden to change the constructions to something modern, and the car traffic is restricted and the municipality is also very strict with the rules. it is actually also classify as Magic city because with a lotttt of effort can maintain the magic of an old colonial city.

Charlie Dillon, it's been years since I've traveled to Guatemala and you are correct. It was a beautiful nation. Some parts are more scenic and some are industrial. All in all, the people are very kind and intelligent and happy to help you find your visit very pleasant. I travelled back four more trips.

"Wow, that's amazing" exact words from Andre, my eight year old son... Going around Antigua was truly walk back in time... Not so different from early Philippine times when we were under the Spanish era...there are still some cobbled stone streets here around the Philippines... Its so nice of the police to offer escorting you on that dangerous stretch of road. Looking forward again to that next upload Noraly... May God bless and keep you safe.

Glad you got a map from your host or we would have missed all of the old capital. With a curvey road to the lake. Fun for you and Alaska with a slight detour and river crossing. What a fantastic episode. As an expat living here most of the time, it was a stunning representation of this town. I have a CRF300 rally as well and I'm sure a few people did a doubletake seeing you riding down the street and thinking it was me. Antigua deserves at least a week to fully embrace the charm of the people and the great sense of community we share here. Best wishes on your adventures. Your an inspiration to so many.

When I see all those churches and think about the people (indigenous) who built them. It is revealing on many levels the real history of colonization by Europe in the new world. I guess it was one way to keep the natives from getting restless, keep them busy and tired, building churches. Thank you Noraly for another informative tour. Stay safe on the next leg of your journey.

The purple flowered trees look like Jacarandas. South Africa, particularly Johannesburg and Pretoria have hundreds of streets lined with them - they're spectacularly beautiful in full bloom during spring, and because they're such tall, sturdy trees they also provide wonderful shade as well. 💜 Antigua looks like a stunning old city to explore, wow!

Thanks for sharing Antigua. Was there on my bicycle a few years ago on my way to Peru from Vancouver Canada during the International Music Festival that they have every year. It takes place in many venues around the city. They had a bunch of free concerts in the central square and musicians from all over the world. As I was heading south along the highway only a short distance from the city a few large boulders were fired from the Volcano and landed in the farmers field beside the road. There were 20 or so other boulders/rocks in the field. Had a discussion with another cyclist a moth or so later and he had pictures of a couple of guys removing the boulders to the edge of the field. When the rocks are ejected there is a large bang so you can hear and then see the rocks flying. Not sure I would be in the field. But they have probably been doing it for years! Really loved Antigua and the friendly people! The church by the square survived the earthquake that destroyed the town and you can see over the main front door huge cracks that shows the way it was constructed made it quite earthquake proof. There have been many earthquakes over the years just not as large.

And at least in the Eastern side of the U.S. they make a big deal about homeowners mowing & letting the grass shoot out in the road (bike hits it just right & down it goes. Just before Noraly hit the nicely paved road I saw some horse poo on the road & I thought of the grass. I glad to Not see more of it because it would have stuck if she hit some & went down. After getting a V-Star 1100 Classic I noticed not near as many HD riders wave back. I have plenty of HD friends who do wave back and of course many HD riders wave just not as many. No problemo though, we all just love the ride❤👍💯❣
