Here's an example of a Volvo with a corrupted or mismatched "married" ECU. Don't waste your time or mine telling me about fuel pump relays or special starting procedures. I'm a mile ahead of you on it.

I know this is old but for people finding this trying to fix their own car. Had the same problem. Bad electronic throttle module check the fuse to it first. They have a contact sensor that wears out and throttle doesn't know where to go. replace by VIN numbers on car. Xemodex sells a great magnetic sensor replacement for$600 that will never have the sensor wear out. I got one of those and been running great since.

Try checking the ground wires in connection with your coil packs, if you don't have a good ground, it won't run right or maybe not at all. make sure that you are getting plenty of gas to the injectors. let me know what you find out?

You can remove relay number 210/211 (it is behind the dash toward the upper part of the firewall). Look at the 210 side of the relay and identify the two terminals that are labeled 50E and 50F. Fashion a jumper wire that goes between the two socket positions associated with those terminals and jumper them. The alarm should quit and the car should start and run just fine. You might also try to lock and unlock the doors with the keys. Often the door switches get corroded since everyone always uses the remote keyfob but try it on both the driver's side and the passengers side. I've heard of cases where turning the key to the unlock position a couple of times in fairly quick secession will reset the system.

WhoSaidTyler, did you happen to make/find a video on the antenna swap/repair.. before this video? My 01 C70 that I bought to flip is doing the same thing.. I found the ohm spec for testing the ring (2-12 ohms) but I am unsure as to how in-depth it'll be to get to that CEM to clean the connectors.. Thanks a bunch for any help you can offer! -Ave
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage 10 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, I didn't make a video. The antenna ring isn't hard to replace. You remove the plastic surrounds from the steering column and then the ring is situated around the ignition cylinder. I believe it is just a press-fit. There is one harness connector which supposedly gets loose and stops making contact. I hope you have better luck than I, because what people don't want to talk about is that the ECM can get corrupted or simply fail, and that car will NEVER run until the ECM...THAT ecm...is repaired and rebooted by Volvo. These cars use a "handshake" security system like a lot of cars, with a random code generated on every start, but if one part of that system loses it's programming..they don't run. They run a couple seconds, then the ECM kills the spark.
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage

I have been thru that with my volvo v70awd 2001. Try to pour gas in the admision thru airfilter tube. 50-100ml. if the car starts, you have a problem with the gas sistem (fuel pump, injectors, imobiliser or no fuel in the tank). If it doesn't check for spark at sparkplugs or timing belt jumped a few tooths.

I am sorry you had that problem. Volvos are generally robust, safe and reliable. It's not clear what the situation was. You had the car for a good time and suddenly it would not start? You bought the car as a non-runner? As has been said elsewhere, do-it-yourselfers like you and me must always be prepared to admit that some problems are beyond us and get it trailered to a main dealer. Even if we have to swallow our pride and admit that we bit off more than we could chew. What happened in the end?

Sounds like the immobilizer or key chip has issues. If you do/did put in a new immobilizer it would need to be paired with the key. Otherwise it will just turn over for an eternity but never run or fully start/go. I have over 250,000 on my Volvo & this was the first real pain in the but situation. All vehicles will have problems given enough time & km. It mostly comes down to what you’re familiar with.

The throttle body is also "married" to the car. I swapped an engine in a 99 S70 successfully by reusing the factory throttle body and retaining the ECMs. Your car probably had someone swap one of these things. Google IPD Volvo and call them. I know they can flash these parts but I do not know the costs. Oh, and on the one I fixed the coolant leaked out of the heater core on the freeway and the cyl head cracked within minutes. The driver could not pull over and shut down immediately.

Too bad that you didn't send me a PM, there was a fix to bypass the immobiliser. Look for a Bosch immobilizer ECU box. It is located on the left side of the steering column, it's black whit a whit sticker on it. The black connector has 4 wires, 2 red/blue and 2 blue/green, remove the connector from the immobilizer ECU box and connect the 2 red/blue wires together and the 2 blue/green wires togeter. Look up the next connector whit 4 wires black/white, yello/white, pink and yellow/black. Connect the black/white, yello/white wires togeter and the pink yellow/black togeter. No more immobilizer problems.. To bad it's to late now.

What this car needs is a new owner...one that understands cars..and Swedish cars at that. This isn't an immobilizer problem nor is it an ECM/throttle problem. It's a fuel pump problem. But wait....he said he checked his fuel pressure. Sure...that might be okay. What this points to is an intermittent fuel pump failure. That is, your fuel pump isn't always getting power, or it's not getting the power it needs. Your fuel pressure reading may not be entirely accurate, as you might be checking that fuel pressure reading AFTER you've cranked the engine a few times. If it's getting low power, it's not working at it's optimium. Once you've been cranking the car for like a year and a day (as in this video) eventually you'll get enough fuel in the fuel line to give you a "normal" fuel pressure reading. The easiest fix for this is a new fuel pump relay (about $50 at autozone). The worst case scenario for this problem is a new fuel pump (about $1000 for the pump and parts, plus the enormous amount of time you'll spend looking for the access point behind the back seat under the carpet, or dropping the tank). SOURCE: This happened to me last year on a hot summer day. I tried chasing the problem down myself until I got to the fuel pump, and the only thing that corrected the problem was replacement of said pump.
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage 8 жыл бұрын
Fuel pump was the FIRST thing replaced. NO, it was NOT $1000 for the pump and parts. That pump was $100 on Rockauto including the strainer. That's why you guys get bent over so bad on repairs to these things. You all ACCEPT THE NOTION that because it's Volvo only someone that UNDERSTANDS them can repair them, and secondly, that it's OK to pay some outrageous repair bill, even if you are getting screwed hard on the parts and labor. I understand alright...I understand I quit on Volvo's and went back to Asian cars.

@@TylersNeighborhoodGarage Putting a $100 aftermarket pump on a Volvo is a guaranteed way to make the car run like crap or not run at all. Some parts (especially electronic parts) on these cars can only be replaced with OEM or OEM equivalent. Fuel pump is a big one. I agree that Volvo is not a fun make to work on, and certainly not cheap, but throwing aftermarket parts on them is asking for trouble. I've owned 3 of these in my lifetime (2 to be repaired and resold, and 1 that I kept) and I know that firsthand.

Hahaha Too late...I just bought one today in Alaska that is a 98 v70 with about 150,000 miles on it in pretty good shape for $250. So did you end up fixing it? I think my car has the exact same problem. I am getting a new battery tomorrow. It seems like lawn mowers do this and it is something stopping the gas flow on the side, usually some crude or old rubber skin that decayed off and I shake the hell out of it it fix that. What was that thing you did with the key to stop the alarm? My alarm is going off. Maybe you should change the fuel filter. Glad to see you pumped the brakes. I probably would have done that a little more aggresively.

A 1998 has a security system that can act up, especially that decoder ring around the ignition switch, but it does not have the intertwined ECU that has to be reprogrammed with the car's VIN, or the drive by wire(the famous ETM that malfunctions so often they gave it, it's own warning light). Check out Robert DIY's channel, he has devoted his life to these cars.
@HollywoodCreeper
@HollywoodCreeper 2 жыл бұрын
@@TylersNeighborhoodGarage haha I think I did. I solved the security problem in seconds! Haha Just by closing the door and using the key. I think I have this car pretty licked. Knock on wood. I got a brand new battery using old records, and I upgraded the battery for $20, so now I have the best battery with a 3 year warranty. That was a huge win. There is fuel under pressure in the gas rail. The tank is almost full. A guy got another guy to check out my car. He put a diagnostic tool on it and it kept coming up as a camshaft position sensor. I guess there is a rear one that is like a cap with a wire coming off that isn't hard to replace. That was like $250 locally at Autozone I think about, and $139 at another shop, but $23.99 at Rockauto. There is also a crankshaft position sensor that is on the top of the engine that is even easier to replace, and this one youtube video by A1auto or something has a video replacing it and the video is like a minute 7 in length. They call it the camshaft position sensor, but I think they are mistaken, either way, I am going to adjust my order with rock auto to get them to send me one of those out too and because that is so easy to replace, I will replace that first and see if that does anything. It is good to have either way. I do have spark by the way according to the guy who helped me, and he also refered me a really excellent mechanic. The key also got stuck, and after hours of struggling to get it out and my hand hurt from trying, I got smart and searched in youtube and I found this excellent video by Cody the car guy! What a God send!!!!! Hahahahaha He was right on the money. I unstuck two buttons and the key came out. Hahahahaha Then I celebrated with a 8 piece jalapeño poppers. I had a very good day yesterday in Alaska. I saw balugas, fighter jets, stopped a shoplifter to everyone's glee, stopped a bike theft from a 6'2" Somalian, but then realized he was probably stealing it from someone else who already stole it. Haha I got my driver's license back from Walmart after it being gone for 13 days after not giving up and staying hot on it's trail. That was remarkable and such a triumph for me. I also discovered my life's calling after 4 decades. I want to be the Joker from Batman. Hahahahaha Quite a day. Hahaha Crime fighting is a lot of fun. I also bought a Porsche! Haha There are strange things done in the midnight sun. I also didn't get run over by a gigantic fork lift, and I made some friends.
@HollywoodCreeper
@HollywoodCreeper 2 жыл бұрын
So I ended up replacing the camshaft position sensor and it started right up. It seemed easy by watching videos about how to replace it. Then in real life it seemed hard and got intimidating. Then I stopped being a pussy and and I focused and did it and it was pretty easy. It was very satisfying when it started right up. It makes me irritated for all the times I tried to turn it over to no avail and for all the times other people thought they would have a different result. There is no forcing this car. All these things have a reason. What I want to know is the reason the part failed. I find it amazing it could just stop working. I would not be surprised if it works, but just had a bad connection somewhere bc of corrosion or oil or something. It is something to keep in mind that you could tinker with before sending away for a new part and waiting for it. I just don't see some simple circuit board braking. I'm sure it is fixable like anything if you know.

You had an intermittent key/antenna communication fault, or immobilizer fault, and as you said, without VIDA, nearly zero chance you'll fix it. With the fault you'll be able to get it to start and catch for no more than 2 seconds. It'll drive you nuts!

(remote is one minute programming and 2$ of hardware, see Arduino to compare, and they charge near 500 bucks). And same thing each time they can add proprietary stuff somewhere. He claimed he changed the distributor cap.Worked for a day lol. Then I left it parked where I work. Two days later it started right up just like that. Two days later broke down again. I haven't touched it since then. What I noticed was that when I opened the switch the fan would come on. And the car was stone cold. You stated yourself what you have to do! Read the proprietary Volvo codes, not just generic OBD2 ones. There are numerous reasonably priced scanners for that purpose; I recently bought the iCarsoft unit which has been great, $150. Essential for this older Euro! Jacking off the key for a half-hour? Jumping the fuel pump relay, disconnecting the MAF? That's all shitty diagnosis. Approach the car properly, start by reading the codes!

can you elaborate on this please? where is the fuse? i went outside today and it was just a brick with wheels. ran fine yesterday. the car is in good shape, but my fob wouldnt open the locks when i went to get in. is that possibly the problem? could it be a bad battery in the fob telling the car not to start? sorry to bother you, but thanks for any help...

Sorry took so long. I'm still having some problems starting, starts ok for couple of weeks, then plays up but does start after a while, had it checked at volvo dealership, it was starting ok when my appointment came up ,they could find no faults, the main guy said it might be bad connection on CEM maybe check that, he did'tn think it had anything to do with the fob. Hope this helps...

I had a 94 Volvo for years only issues were suspension. Finally after years and years of little maintenance it started randomly stalling out. In defense of Volvo it would of kept going if i was willing to do maintenance. I know for certain the issue isn't the anti theft as i just bought a 98 Volvo yesterday. Was rather impressed by how drove through ice covered streets. This morning went to start it no go. I thought battery do to it being -10 degrees out. I looked into the anti theft for the f of it. I went out put the key in the drivers side door. Locked it then unlocked twice unlocking all the doors. I put the key in the ignition and nothing not even an attempt to crank just like in am. I tried 3 more times and on the 3rd it started to crank and started. It is still running as i type this. In a little bit I will turn her off and see if she will start right up. From what I read about the anti theft it won't even try to crank never mind start then stall out like in your case. Yours idk what it could be but don't dis a very reliable car just cause you can't figure it out

Why in the world do you guys list the problems those cars experience, then add "but it's a very reliable car". No, my Camry is a very reliable car. A car that decides for itself when it wants to start is not reliable. This is just more of this "cult of personality" stuff that isn't based on facts.

There are youtube videos that say that if you disconnect the battery for a couple days, the electricity will completely leave the capacitors and reset the car so that you don't need the dealer with his reprograming computer to reprogram the pcm. Haha, you're barely cranking it. Seems like you already had your mind made up before you started working on the car. Nearly all the dash lights light up before the car actually starts. That's a poor indicator of anything being wrong. Also, the Volvo security lockout you blame would prevent the car from even cranking in the first place. How do I know? I dealt with it. FYI, mileage alone is a terrible indicator for how good a used Volvo is. The wrong owner at 117K can make all the difference in the world. -Volvo V70 owner who has 280K and slightly more patience

+Benjamin Pina Haha. I should have filmed it when I cranked it so much the battery nearly ran down. How long are you supposed to crank it? Until it decides that it wants to run? I do enjoy the delusional comments from some folks because I understand that it's the only way that some owners can justify dealing with the horrible things these cars can do to them. I bought a 760 wagon after this. Still idiosyncratic, but starts every time.

This may be the best and most relevant comment here. I realize this is an old video, but its current for my set. My car 2000 S70 went from running fine to starting and stalling. Got a few miles in, stalled out, 20 min later it runs again and I get a few more miles. For my car I’m guessing fuel pump but have to diagnose still. With the engine off but key on I can hear a electronic squealing noise under the hood. Hard for me to pinpoint though as a USMC combat vet (0811 Artillery) 2003 War in Iraq, my hearing is worse off than my car, at least the car can be fixed. Any tips for my repair?

The problem is, here in the south Volvo's do not have the owner base that they do in the Pacific Northwest and New England. The nearest independent Volvo garage that is capable of even finding out what is wrong with this car is 3.5 hours away in Atlanta. I hung onto this car for three months trying to get it cleared up. It's a pretty car but I just don't have the time and finances to deal with it's issues, especially when nobody knows what the issues are. If it had a bad ECM or the wrong ECM, game over. Add to that possibly a bad electronic throttle body and it's just not financially viable to repair it.

WhoSaidTyler I think you did the right thing in the end...I don't know if you tried to ebay it or not, but either way, keeping it in Huntsville was out of the question. I have a mechanic friend who works on alot of volvos and he said you can get the ECM rebuilt and if you have the right independant mechanic, they can divorce/remarry the ecm to the car... But thats $800+ and only a limited number of mechanics can. Alot of people are reharnessing them from 1998 V70's and converting them over.. (I know yours has gone on, but this is for future FYI).. I am told 1999-2004 Volvo's are the real pits and2005 and newer are fairly decent, with the exception of the XC90 SUV's and the cross country wagons. I don't know this for sure, except for what LEE has told me and what little I've read on line.. Although Ford bought them in my 99, Ford had to re engineer everything and have it improved by 2005. Volvo lost alot of its diehard customers due to this bull crap and now Volvo is only about 1% market share, having sold 50K cars in 2012. Its rather a shame too, because you can get some good deals, but its just too dicey.. Way to dicey.. Need a fancy car, get a Lexus, Infiniti or a Mercedes.

Dude seriously, someone who should not have been missing with that car has done so. And you bought it online as well. My brother did that, guess what? His didn't work either! So, if your going to buy something from an "online site" then YOU DAMN SURE MAKE SURE THAT IT WORKS! TELL THAT SUM BI**H TO DRIVE IT TO YOUR HOUSE EVEN! If they are non compliant, THEN DON'T BUY IT!! The Swedish auto manufactures are at an...Almost psychotic level of "safety consciousness", you need to understand that be for you buy one. I bough in 2013 a 2014, not because I didn't like the way they looked, it was more of a "superstition thing" a 2013 13 a unlucky number. LOL I know but, I'm am so glad that I opted for the 2014 because they offered more in their cars for that year than the previous year, and in previous years FORD HAS OWNED THEM! I can tell your a Chevy guy and so was I, the little Suzuki is a bit of a through off in you driveway, but hell, they are as reliable as the sun coming up every morning and going down every night, and their good if not GREAT ON FUEL! Getting back to the "safety consciousness" of the Scandinavian people, I don't know if you have heard of a television show from the United Kingdom called "Top Gear" And back in 2012 I think it was, because of the "economic collapse of 2008" there were 2 major companies Volvo, and Saab. Now in one of the episodes that aired was a tribute to Saab and they highlighted the safety consciousness of Saab, and at that time Saab was owned by GM, and what the guys from Top Gear did was take two cars; one a Saab and the other a BMW, both of the same year and roughly the same "packaging" from the companies. then they took the cars [and this was to highlight the psychotic nature of the Swedes towards SAFETY] They suspended them both upside down from a height of about 8 to 10 feet In the air and just dropped them under the force of Gravity. The Saabs' construction was soooooo strong that the "A" and "B" pillars hardly moved, as for the BMW [and it is worth mentioning that the vehicles weighed about the same, I think the Saab was heaver if anything] The BM did not fair so well. The "A" & "B" pillars nearly crushed flat. Now I think it's also worth mentioning that the "Main host Mr. Jeremy Clarkson is 6feet and 5inches, while one of his 2 cohost is Mr., Richard Hammond who is like 5feet tall at best. He even mentioned after seeing the result from the BMW's "crash test" he said, and now I'm paraphrasing here "Even I'd be hard pressed not to have my neck broken by this!" Now mind you that that is coming form a man that Mr. Clarkson refers to as "The Frig-Magnet" or "Hamster" And now to get back on point here; I chose the Volvo because of the 1:the fit and finish of the car is just terrific; 2:Volvo's Safety record [coming from a country where heavy snow and ice and blind crests and hard turns were all how they "proved the car" not at the Nurburging] 3: of all of the cars I looked at over a period of a month, GM, Chevy, Chrysler, Dodge, Infinity, Mercedes, BMW, the lot all of them. And because of my disability made me choose that I was not going to buy something that I either had to "climb up into" or "Drop myself into" was out of the deal. So I chose a crossover; Not too high, not too low, as "goldilocks' put it, JUST F***ING RIGHT!" And of all of them, the Volvo seats ARE TO THIS DAY THE MOST COMFORTABLE SEATS I HAVE EVER PUT MY FAT AMERICAN A** DOWN ON!!!! VOLVO KNOWS HOW TO MAKE A SEAT COMFORTABLE!!! And the X-5 I felt as though I was being "squeezed into the car" where as the Volvo was just like, "come on in and have a seat, the waiter will be with you in a moment", as you sit in a comfortable booth at whatever fancy restaurant you want to pick. Now I know that my vehicle's warranty will run out time wise before I EVER GET TO THE MILLAGE PART OF IT. and to my good fortune, the credit union I belong to has made a deal with an aftermarket warranty company that I can get a good deal on for coverage of drivetrain and electronics for not much money and the plans last 6 or more years, and the best part is that I don't have to pay for it all at once, I can make a monthly payment plan. And that comes in quite handy when your living on a FIXED INCOME. So I would say that you have been taken to the cleaners on this car, and you said that you only paid 800.00 or so dollars for it. I would be saying right from the beginning; okay, what's wrong with it? if you only want this much for a car that is in this good of condition, what is wrong with it. Those should have been the first words out of your mouth. Unless they were and the person who sold it to you lied, in which case you can make a "lemon law" complaint, unless that only applies to like dealerships and sh*t like that. But that's where I would have started, and if not then I'd have found out where that f**ker lived and kicked his a**! "What the F**k was going through your head when you sold me the Swedish piece of S**t, {all while kicking him in the stomach} then you let him respond. And if you don't like the response, kick him a couple more times, then tell him you want your money back! I don't know how much of that last part is possible within the law, but it's fun to dream. And everything before it...All True. I do wish you the best of luck with that car, don't give up on it, once you get it going; you won't be let down. There is a man in the Hamptons who has a 1966 Volvo 1800 and that man alone has put over 3 million miles on that car. And last I knew, all he's done to it, is regular maintenance, has had the engine rebuilt 2 times and that is it. As far as I know. I'm fairly sure it's a manual transmission so, clutches are a consumer maintenance item. I don't know If he has had to do any work to the rear axle, or differential or even the gears themselves. All those thing I don't know, but 3 million miles on one car...That says something about the car, the man and the company that made it!

Yeah, I'll give ya that one. Older vehicles are easier and less "techy" in many way's. But, and this is a big one, the way of the future is more and more electronics in these vehicles, European and American and Japanese as well, oh can't leave out the Koreans. There is even talk about how "hackers" are able to break through code as your driving and make your breaks come on fully at anytime as well, probably, the throttle as well, because so many vehicles have moved to the "drive by wire" option as well. It is an age of innovation and worry all rolled up in one gigantic S**t sandwich in which we all are going to have to take a bite out of at some point. Sad, but, true.

john doe The thing is, I have my Infiniti which is a year older and 115k more worn out than this Volvo, and aside from having a cable throttle, it's as loaded up with electronics as the Volvo. It never had these issues, so obviously the culprit is Volvo, not the "hi-tech" part of it.
@johndoe-kz5hq
@johndoe-kz5hq 9 жыл бұрын
Key word in your opening sentence is "Infiniti" that is it! Japanese and as reliable as the sun rising and setting. Although I really don't know too much about the brand other than their the "Posh" version of a Nissan. And they make the GT-R Which I COVET!!!!! And I know God said not to covet thinning's but, oh man. That is one hell of a car!!! All of them, stemming from the original "Skyline GT-R" right to the straight up GT-R! Now I do believe that Volvo does make a good, possible great car, and that of course depends upon WHO OWNS THEM AT THE TIME. Ford owned them for years and now I am to understand that Ghia, [I'm fairly certain that I spelled that wrong oh well. they are one of the "top 10 selling brands in Japan, behind all of the others that are world known," lol.] some Japanese company is their new owner and we see the disappearance of the "what was new tech twin scroll turbo" which I have, to an engine that Is smaller and has supercharging and turbo charging on it. Like what? I know the concept is simple and they are not the first to do it. I think Detroit Diesel was first, I could be wrong. but if it is a Japanese company who owns them, then any possible "electrical gremlins" should go away and I love mine. Which Infiniti is it?
