Sometimes, those EEC units (and other Volvo modules) can develop cold solder joints on the circuit board where the plugs are soldered to the board. They can easily be re-flowed with a bit of soldering skills.

I really appreciate your videos!! I recently purchased a 1999 xc70 in extremely good shape but had oil leaks. You helped me diagnose where the leaks were coming from and left the mechanics confused as to how I knew exactly where it was😂

Hi Robert, here's another Robert tinkering with those cars. In my MY 1999 S70 I have now replaced two motors (the recirc and the flow direction). I was hoping to see how you got the motors out because the ones in my car are failing. In an S70 and 1st generation V70 there are four motors, three are the same (driver & passenger temperature and recirc), the one controlling the air flow is different. It's slightly different from an 850. The first motor you pulled out and looked at was the one controlling the air flow and should have moved when you changed the control, but only if the fan is running! The second one, behind the cruise control bellows, is the one controlling drivers side temperature. It should move if you change the control, once again, if the fan is running. I have found on my test bench that the electric motor is very powerful because it turns very fast and is then slowed with gears, I have opened one I bought from a breaker, cleaned and regreased it. Two pins are for 12V and directly connected to the motor (the ECC reverses polarity to change direction) and three are connected to a variable resistor inside, this is how the ECC measures position. Usually the problem is the motor itself failing or the resistor track getting dirty but it is a good thing anyway to make sure they get plenty of excercise by turning them to defrost now and then! It was a very hard job to get that motor out, the steering column is in the way so I couldn't get a proper screwdriver in, had to do some improvisation but I managed. Last week the motor controlling the drivers side temperature got stuck so I can dive under the dashboard once again 🙃 By the way, I like the test device you are using. I was using VIDA but once you hit the calibration button on there, the ECC unit gets stuck with a blinking AC light, I had to buy another unit!

Hi Robert, can you please post the clip again where you fixed the flaps of the defrost and windshield channel, I think that those flaps on my 99 volvo V70 are also stucked and I dont have a clue how to reach them and to check that. thx, Guy from Sweden

Hi Robert, thx for your reply and btw, my best wishes for you and your relatives for the new year, keep up posting those volvo clips, I really enjoy and learn a lot of them ! No, I didnt remove the dash, I am still driving the car at this very moment, dont have a garage, and the temps are around the -30 C-gr last week and with about 70cm of snow... Therefor I was hoping I could reach those flaps without taking away the dash. I guess I will have to wait for the spring to fix the defrost and window heatingI am about to check the blend motor this week, but that works fine and powerful too. I checked the electronics of the blendmotor, but thats also working properly. Thats why my guess is that there is something wrong with the flaps... Thank you anyway for your contact, and I will keep you posted... Kindly, Guido@@RobertDIY

I have a 2000 Volvo S70. The ECC comes on and off randomly. It seems to lose power completely. It works about 40 percent of the time. I checked all the fuses and relays cant figure why it loses power. I even changed the power stage blower motor resistor part. Its still intermittent. Any ideas?
@RobertDIY

My guess would be that the controller is going bad. Is it that the fan doesn't blow or do you loose control of the functions? If the fan stops, it could be a dying fan.

Flickering of the light can indicate a problem w/ battery cable to fuse box. Common problem w/ this model.

@@RobertDIY flickering of the light usually means one of the microswitches in one of the door locks isn't making good contact anymore because the arm that is actuating the switch is worn. Fixed that by glueing a thin piece of plastic on the arm. You can check manually which one is faulty, by opening the door, looking at the red door light and see if it is on (it should when the door is open, could be blown bulb) and see if it goes out if you close the latch manually with the door open. Don't forget to unlatch the lock by pulling the handle and turning the latch back into open position.

@@RobertDIY The motors probably work on a PWM signal, you need an Oscilloscope to measure the voltage.

@@RobertDIY Hold the actuator in your hand looking at the where connector goes. Put the row with two pins on the bottom. The leftmost pin on the top and bottom are pins 4 & 5 which are the power supply. You can connect a 9-12V battery to the terminals to make them operate. Swap the + & - of the battery to make the motor go in the opposite direction.

@@bernardaflores1720 The position sensor circuit is 0- 5V depending on the position of the shaft so no oscilloscope is needed, just a multimeter.

@@bernardaflores1720 No they are not on a PWM signal. Just two pins connected directly to the motor, the ECC control unit sends 12V to them, direction is controlled by reversing polarity. The other three pins are connected to a variable resistor inside, so the ECC can measure its position.
