I mean it was kinda obvious that magikarp wouldn't be able to do much considering his mainline game gimmick and Unite making sure the pokemon are true to those games. Besides that gyarados is pretty popular so it was gonna be added sooner or later. I can bet you we're gonna get at least one Hoenn legendary at some point, maybe even jirachi.

It is. It's a bit different in Unite but you lose a character when you lose a match instead of when you die because of how the game works.
