Small thing, but I just love the idea of an Alolan Vulpix or Squirtle with a pirate hat running around a region, casually walking up to random trainers and challenging them into a battle, tricking then into thinking that they’re asking to be caught until they just throw 6 Master Balls with 5 level 100 legendaries with maxed out EVs and a level 10 Dratini/Onyx. Heck, even in Karen’s team it aged poorly. Karen has an Umbreon, the tankiest of all the Eeveelutions up to that point. She has the pretty good Pokemon of Houndoom and Vileplume and Golbat. If her favorites are those, of course she would have enough victories to be the last of the Elite 4 members. At this point her thing is amended to “if for some reason your Pokémon is overwhelming or meta, or is good in an otherwise shaken-up format, then you can win with your favorites.” Let’s say someone’s favorite was a Delcatty, or a Kakuna, or a Wiglett, or even something like an Unfezant. You’re not winning much, if at all, with those Pokemon.

One really funny addition could have been to add in a surprise, that after everyone selected their 30 favorites, you reveal that they have to take 6 random Pokemon after each gym. I really like the idea of running with favorites, but it did turn into mostly the strongest being picked, or some favorites some strongest but strongest lead the fights. This doesn't divide well by 8 gyms and the elite 4, but with adjusted numbers/rules I think that could work out.
