@@hirololisuko1486 Mine too. If you spend a lot of time playing challenging orchestral works, there are those passages which really must be practiced, and others that, while not that hard technically, simply require darned good reading skills. Rest-counting, changes of key signature, tempo, dynamic, and expression changes. Another great prep for sight-reading is playing in pit orchestras. Anything can happen! I think mental attention is the key to good sight-reading, and that's hard to train outside of pressure situations.

Okay, first of all I am so happy Eddy and Brett demonstrate that even pros miss things. I'm also thrilled that lots of folks here are taking up violin or any instrument actually because Twoset has fostered their introduction to and love of classical music. I've been playing piano since I was 6 years old, so a total of 52 years and counting. I am not a pro by any means. I started clarinet at 10 or 11. Sight reading, no matter how long you've played anything is just a bear. The one thing that really upped my sight reading on clarinet though was playing with a city concert band close to where I lived. We only performed during the summer. We had two hour practices as a group on Tuesday night. Thursday night of that same week we would perform. We had new music every week. Some were old chestnuts that everyone knew and others were brand new to everyone. The pressure of that kind of performance schedule really made me focus and learn to sight read pretty dang well. I'm out of practice now, but if you already play and can get the chance to have that kind of experience I highly recommend it. It didn't hurt that I was getting paid and some performances were music union gigs so the pay went up. Still, sight reading is one of those things we all have to do, and the thing we all detest to one extent or another.

As much as I hated ABRSM, I miss my piano lessons. After 3-4 years of stopping playing, I don't even know how to practice now. It is obvious why, but my hands feel weak it feels weird to play again. Edit: I passed Grade 8, but I think my skills right now is like Grade 2 😂 Edit2: I managed to somehow practice Träumerei's first two bars for like 10 minutes!

felt--back in march i started practicing viola regularly again after a solid 3 years of barely touching my instrument...i couldn't even tune, my ear training had gotten so bad 😂 and i swear every muscle in my back, shoulders, neck, arms and hands all took a turn being sore 🥴
@KieronTaylor3 жыл бұрын
Back to your piano right now and practice! After the first couple of sessions it'll start to feel easier again, you just need to get past 48 months of dust on your reflexes. Your brain knows the way. Seriously, just play stuff for fun. Also, can we agree at the absolute barbarity of grade 8 piano sight-reading?
@kris_pang3 жыл бұрын
@@KieronTaylor I want too, but I don't have access to my upright right now. Last year I had electric, but now I also don't have access. I really want to learn Debussy, but it's hard with my poor technique, so maybe I need to learn etudes first. Or maybe just let loose and learn jazz. Sight-reading is my weakness! It is always a struggle no matter grade I was in and it is blurry now, but for sure I screwed it up back then 😂
@kris_pang3 жыл бұрын
@@kapazs I see, for mine it is like... I can't control my hands anymore. I suck and even Clair de Lune is hard. I repeated playing the first two bars because it sounded like shit. On the other hand, my ears are better, a little bit even though it is still not good.
@snowyminnesota60283 жыл бұрын
@@kris_pang Whenever I've had a break from playing and need to take time to build up and restore some skills, I go back to good, musical etudes from when I was much younger, and try to play them really, really well. Good tone production, great articulation. I try to be patient with myself and just enjoy the sounds I'm making. Two or three or five days of that and I'm well on my way toward at least some degree of restoration. Give yourself some room to start "way back" and I bet things will be better, once you get access to an instrument again.

A few extra data points (for anyone interested in these things) particularly on the difference between graded sight-reading and diploma quick studies: For Grade 1-8: - Sight-reading tests are generally at a level of a prepared piece two grades earlier (e.g. G6 sight-reading is the same level as a G4 set piece). This is particularly important for preparing for particular key signatures. - The sight-reading tests are exactly that: you get 60 seconds to look through the piece and play as accurately as you can with as much detail as you can manage. On the other hand, for Diplomas: - Diploma quick studies are graded as follows: DipABRSM = c.G6 level (i.e. the same as a G8 sight-reading test); LRSM = c.G8 level; FRSM = c.DipABRSM level - You get a full ten minutes to look through and practice the piece before performing. The expected performance level is, therefore, a lot higher (getting the notes and counting is taken as a basic pass). I think if the guys had had ten minutes to look at those last three tests, they'd have pretty much nailed them. The Diploma quick studies are IMHO a much more accurate reflection of real-life orchestral sight-reading, where you do get a quick chance to work out the tricky bits beforehand!
