In this Tea Break Fix I look at a CORSORI Air Fryer with a very noisy fan. I previously fixed this item as the door safety switch had broken, but viewers mentioned that the fan didn't sound right, so I decided to look at it again to see if we can find out what is causing the noise and if it is fixable.

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

Hey Vince, there is a second reason for the other fan: You want to remove the humid air from the inside, because otherwise you would be steaming the food instead of baking / air frying it

This fix has the added benefit of "not covering your food with a light dusting of ground aluminium". From a general google search of shaded-pole motors it does look like they usually have a non-metallic spacer against each phosphor bronze bush.

@@wayne7521 "not covering your food with a light dusting of ground aluminium" I assume he is talking about food poisoning here so: As I said aluminium is more expensive so the correct is iron dust. The take away here is that aluminium is toxic while iron is not.

Vince, I've been watching your videos for about a year now and the number of videos I've seen of yours where you would have been able to do an easier and probably better fix (such as this fix) if you had a 3d printer. With this fix you would be able to simply print a new plastic washer to fit on the bottom to space it back out again. Also things like the RC car you did a couple of days ago, you would be able to 3d print a new cog out of Nylon filament. I've been 3d printing now for around 10 years and have used my printers for so many household repairs and made additional bits and pieces for my hobbies, I wouldn't be without one now! Don't get me wrong, your lateral thinking is awesome and some of the fixes you do are properly amazing. Keep up the great content. Best Wishes, Paul - Aspie_Geek_UK

The extra fan cools the top of the metal shield around the heater. The cool shield then condenses the hot oil fumes and stops the oil from exiting the vent hole. Remember, there is a bunch of oil particles floating around in the hot oil.

Shaded pole motors generally have a lot of axial play and this is not a problem when they are running as the magnetic field in the stator aligns the rotor. If the motor is noisy on run down then this is because the rotor is dropping from the loss of magnetic field and then binding. Bent plastic fans, use a knife to cut some shallow slots on the high side and hot melt back together whilst flat. The shaft may have walked down the rotor when it was dropped, apply some kinetic therapy to moves shaft.
@GGigabiteM
@GGigabiteM 3 ай бұрын
The magnetic field in the rotor has nowhere near enough strength to keep it centered. Any axial load is going to push it to one side or the other, where it will cause friction, heat and wear. Even in horizontal operation, these things wear out quickly because manufacturers make them with no oil ports, and these motors burn oil by design with their nasty sleeve bearings. If they're in a dusty environment, they wear out even faster because the dust mixes with the oil and makes liquid abrasive.

I would just move the whole nylon washers assembly from the top to the bottom part. The rotor sits on the bottom “bearing” all the time and there will be the same play as before, so we will have like 4mm gap between the rotor and the top “bearing” - they will never touch.

Those motors are usually mounted with the shaft horizontal for use in fan applications. I don't think it was designed to be used in the vertical shaft orientation and hence it doesn't have proper thrust washers/bushings.

I used to repair Electric Motors from several hundred Kw down to ones smaller than that shaded pole motor in the Air Fryer. I routinely used to repaair shaded pole units and have stripped hundreds of them down. It was often far more practical ( and cheaper ) to fit a new Motor. There is ( was? ) a UK company called REMCO who supplied all our shaded pole motors. The second ( smaller ) metal fan thats located on the shaft inboard of the main blower fan acts as a heatsink to stop the motor overheating ( the air being channeled over the metal fan blades draws the heat from the motor shaft ) there's quite a few with a similar design that are used in gas burners / industrial ovens etc. As the unit is vertically mounted it is possible ( though very unusual ) for the rotor to creep down the shaft. If you see it is out of alignment with the Iron core that it sits centrally in then it's possible to put some Loctite 638 on the shaft before tapping the core back into position.

Large " convection " ranges (ovens) also expel their cooking heat to the atmosphere. This is just a tiny version of the same principle of removing moisture and excess heat along with circulating the heated air within the cooking space. It doesn't usually stop people from cooking in the summer months. It kind of baffled me, why you didn't safely plug it in and run it, when you initially took the top off? It may have pinpointed the area of grinding so much quicker. I do believe you are correct that a manufacturing error is the root cause with a missing washer of some sort on the downside of the motor /fan assembly and that noise is why it was returned. This type of appliance is classed as disposable for sure, so usually, if it breaks it gets binned. Entertaining repair, nonetheless.

8:30 - Be a bit wary with some washers etc. that look like that. I know Asbestos is banned for most things now, at least in the UK. But it's possible that washer is made from some Beryllium alloy maybe, which is almost as bad. Then again, I guess the cooker would need to be "food safe", so maybe it is just some inert fibreglass or high-heat polymer stuff? Bascially, just don't crunch it up and breathe it in. lol

So with a metl fan and shaft the fans going to burn out very quickly with no cooling. No amount of insulation will stop the heat going down the shaft.
