I've always loved the banjo but never played one until now. So I bought myself a Deering Goodtime 2 and decided to see if I could learn enough to play a song in just 24 hours. Do you think I can pull it off? Watch the video to find out!

Bravo Chris, I'm impressed. My nephew is a prof. bluegrass banjo picker in the San Francisco area, and he's been playing for almost 50 years. My sister said he used to play it night and day when he first started out. I'm going to link your video to him, he'll like it I'm sure.

I have a Deering open back, I spent a little bit less because I was unsure if I would be able to get the swing of it! Now I wish I had the Goodtime 2 and maybe in my life time, what's left, I'll get one. But I'm writing because I loved that you took on this challenge. I am also a guitar player, some classical as well and jazz and rock guitar. In the early 70s, I played bass in a real rock band LOL. I'm very grateful to Deering for giving free beginner instruction, I started out doing claw hammer because I though the rhythm thing would make it easier for me and I wouldn't have to fuss with the finger picks. Claw hammer got a little ordinary, not a negative criticism, just me. Then I decided that I would bite the bullet and buy some finger picks and give it a go. It was very strange at first but i did take to it after "rolling" around on the banjo. The G drone string was very awkward. I bought some spikes for it but have not placed them yet nor have i tried to play in other keys with a capo. It's coming though. Bottom line for me: I wish I had taken up the banjo years ago, even though the sounds of classical and finger picking guitar move me, I feel so at home on the banjo. A plus is that when you tell someone you play banjo and play a tune for them, most have no idea if you make a mistake, LOL. I learned a ton of stuff from youtube teacher/performer Jim Pankey. I also support him on Patreon. The Chrome youtube looper as also been terrific tool along with the youtube speed playback controls. I've subscribed to you to see what you're up to. The Krueger Brothers lesson series on yoututbe is fantastic as well.

In a lot of other videos I’ve seen that planting you ring finger, pinky finger, or both on the head of the banjo really helps with stability and speed!
@Vader99ify
@Vader99ify 3 жыл бұрын
It really does but the problem he had was he only had 24 hours so he had to do what was comfortable. When my dad started to teach me banjo about 16 years ago, he made sure to train me to plant those two fingers on the head and I never regretted it.

@@Vader99ify that's how I naturally play guitar. I'm thinking about picking up banjo and this comment is encouraging
@Vader99ify
@Vader99ify 9 ай бұрын
@@ObscenePlanet I also forgot to mention another mistake beginners usually make, just as he did, is not flattening the picking hands wrist. It shouldn't be flat against the head of the banjo but rather bent. When my dad was teaching me he would take a tennis ball and put it under my picking hand wrist so it would arch instead of lay flat.

Nice work in 24 hours! I've been at it for 15+ years and there's always more to learn. Per the picks, even though it may be tough, it is SO worth it. Anchor either the pinky or ring (or both) to provide a solid foundation, and make sure that you have a good attack angle. That will make the difference between a slidey attack sound and the crisp pop desired for bluegrass.
@SixStringFingerpicking
@SixStringFingerpicking 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot. The anchoring I find really hard as I don't do it at all when playing fingerstyle guitar. But I've heard that it's good to do from a few people so I'll just have to work on it.

Been playing banjo for 6+ years here. That wasn't bad! It was actually really cool to see someone just figure out the banjo from their guitar experience. If you're gonna be doing 3-finger Scruggs style, typically you wanna plant your right hand's pinky and/or ring finger(s). That helps the accuracy since your hand is always in the same place. Other than that, you really just wanna learn more banjo-specific clichès and techniques. Cripple creek slide, shave and a haircut - the three songs you'll be requested to play most often are Foggy Mountain Breakdown, The Ballad of Jed Clampett and Dueling Banjos, so make sure you got those down cold =P
@SixStringFingerpicking
@SixStringFingerpicking 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Matt, yeah I'll be going mainly for the three finger style. I've purchased a couple of books and a Truefire course so hopefully they'll put me on the right track.

Something I like to do is de-tune the thumb string down to either an F# or an E. Both really open up some easy jazz chords in the keys you'd most frequently play on a banjo.

Dunno if anyone has already pointed it out below (if yes, my apologies), and I'm sure you'll know about it by now but... Banjo purists would suggest either taking off the resonator, or putting some fingerpicks on them fingers! I'm in my sixth month of playing 3-finger style Bluegrass on the banjo and I wish my playing soudned like that within my first 24 hours of taking up the instrument. Top marks ;-)
