They received tributes, taxes from the locals. And when the NEXT invaders/conquerors took over and became the new administrative/military elite, they too made no attempt to replace the locals. Why would they? They were the source of taxes, tributes etc. But somehow the Anglo-Saxons were unique throughout all of Mediaeval history. Once you realise how absurd a nation that is, it becomes obvious why the Anglo-Saxons themselves clearly distinguished the Welsh(who lived in Wales, Cornwall and Cumbria) from the majority population Britons. And who the modern descendants of the Ancient Britons really are.

The last couple of days, I've been having difficulty in shops that are staffed by people suspected to be Islamic. On two occasions, whilst communicating with them in a completely unguarded, ordinary fashion, I've noticed being treated "funny" by them. This was NOT an issue with any English staff, nor even blk staff. I think that they're chipping away one tiny bit at a time, for one thing at the English, but of course at others as well. Simon: my late father fought in the RAF during WW2; with the result that I was conceived in Elgin, Moray, Scotland, but born in Redruth, Cornwall......a gestation stretching almost the entire length of the island of Great Britain. So, although I am indigenous 'Briton', I am Anglo/Scots. Many other Britons sharwe such a background; and used to do so without any problem. Issues arose when our Politicians began to sell 'Passport Identity' as "British" to whoever paid. Even Elizabeth II (with her addiction to the Commonwealth) was enrolled in this nonsense enterprise. The North of England is overwhelmingly Celtic in DNA. The N/E in particular was relatively empty untill Scots poured down after the act of Union, who were in turn out numbered by the droves of Irish who settled the Northeast after the famine of the 1840s. Very timely Simon..Only yesterday I was on a forum when an African American Professor at an American university, objected to the term ‘Anglo Saxon ‘ on racial grounds, and insisted it should be termed as Medieval European! For myself, this simply showed an amazing level of ignorance and a lack of understanding of European and British origins and history. Interestingly, severe other posters of an obviously left leaning persuasion also supported this idea, as using the term Anglo Saxon clearly had racist and far right connotations! I can only say No!..
