Any thoughts on the systems like Ecotruss and Telebeam for converting lofts with the typical new-build 'W' profile bracing? Are they actually cheaper and more DIY friendly than a traditional steel & timber approach? Thanks!

I've just come across your channel. As I am scouting KZbin for ideas. We are about to move into a 2 bedroom detached bungalow that we need to turn into a 3 bedroom ans I'm hoping the loft will allow this.

It sounds like a good project. Let me know if you have any questions I can try to help with and best of luck.

@@build-better-things I do have a question as you were kind enough to offer lol. As stated previously we are purchasing a completely hipped detached bungalow which we are hoping to convert the loft on. I ideally want to keep the roof the way it is which means I don't want to gable it etc this being the case is the conversion possible I know normally conversions require steels that sit in walls etc but this isn't possible on a all sided hipped roof. Does that cancel the choice to convert or heavily increase the price etc.
@build-better-things Жыл бұрын
Hi. If you look at the attic conversion video from the aerial shot, you’ll see this house is a four way hipped roof and I didn’t use any steel in it, just timbers. The main challenge with hips is getting the headroom. I got around this by using dormers on two sides and putting the stairs and en-suite on the other sides to optimise the space. Price is a relative term but in my view without seeing your project , keeping within the existing hips will add the most value, when you think about cost and aesthetic versus increased value of property. Hope that makes sense.

Very informative. I wonder if you do one to one consultation over phone or on site. We are planning to do a new loft project that is little complicated

Hello am enjoying your videos and Just came across them am wondering am a trying to build am doing the planing drawing is it possible to build it in a factory for them to install on site after the foundation has being layed and how would a completion certificate be obtained can you do a video on this if is possible
@build-better-things2 жыл бұрын
Hi. Do you mean building an extension in the factory? If you mean for example, timber kit then, yes that’s possible, SIPS or timber frame can be done like that. A completion certificate is applied for once you’ve finished building it. It’s just a form to fill in. It needs to be built per your building warrant drawings which is the important bit. The completion certificate is the easy bit. I’ve made a video on that here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/en6Yeo2DdqqEatE

Do hate to nit pick, but 4:50 lead should be fixed using copper nails.
@build-better-things Жыл бұрын
Stainless steel nails work just fine with lead roll. Stainless steel nails were used for a specific reason. But yes, you can also use copper.

Once you took out the existing diagonal struts, how did you make sure that there would be no roof spread?
@build-better-things2 жыл бұрын
Before I took the existing struts out, I installed timber ties at ceiling level and vertical struts at about 1m away from the eaves, with coach bolts and toothed washers at the junction to prevent any rotation at the joint. With the coach bolts tight, I can then remove the diagonal struts one by one. Thanks for the comment.
