I've just googled it and it says the following: Part of Wolf & Gypsy Vintage 'New' range of products Papier D'Arménie incense paper booklet Established 1885, Papier D'Arménie is most ancient natural room deodoriser 12 pages of 36 pre-cut strips Burn or place them in wardrobes, chest of drawers or books and items will be perfumed with a subtle, delicate scent I guess it was used quite a lot among so many rooms with patients, clothing and laundry. The nuns must have a strict cleaning habits as well as perfumed areas.

I have Armenian papers made by the Farmacia de Santa Maria Novello, a very old maker of scented things. I bought them in Florence some years back and they are like incense in paper form! They smell wonderful! Interesting that they made them in France too!

I think the transcription on the wall is maybe saying that the writer thought the children were also being poisoned (like the king) by a clear, odorless substance in food or water. In the "Affair of the Poisons" they believe arsenic was used, which is clear, tasteless and odorless. Also long term exposure to arsenic can cause various types on cancer (bladder, liver and lung). Although they didn't come out and say this directly in the writings, they did sort of elude to this.

Simon the medal is of St Magdalene and on the other side is the Sacri Vultus - Holy Face Relic: The Sacri Vultus - Holy Face - Relic is one of a number of images that were created and actually touched to Veronica’s veil in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. Very interesting finds and I do think those buttons were from uniforms as the Convent was a hospital at one stage. The inscriptions on the wall was very interesting thank you Moe and Ryan for the translation, I must admit it felt spooky for me too when you were in that room. You might want to do crayon rubbings of the writings in the spooky room, if they are deep enough to show up. You might find more that are hard to see with the naked eye. Not to mention it would preserve the writings if you needed to renovate that room.

If you use charcoal you can use unscented hairspray to 'fix' the rubbing afterwards onto the paper so it doesn't smudge.

You can find fixation spray in the sketchbook and paint section of any craft store that is designed to spray on pencil and charcoal drawings to prevent smudging. 👍

Papier d'Arménie are meant to be used one at a time, burned after you use the loo. Once burned they help to mask any nasty odors.

Ryan! It’s important to remember that the nuns were subject to all the strengths and weaknesses that any other women have. Some became very troubled or were very troubling! The other sisters looked after one another as part of their way of life. So, if one of them became mentally disturbed, for example, the others did what they could to help the sick sister. Your wall-writer may have been one of those troubled sisters. Perhaps she was one of those people who were implicated in that poisoning plot and was forced to live in house arrest in the convent! That was done sometimes to aristocratic women rather than to put them in a common prison or to put them to death.

The time gap between l'Affaire du Poison and the convent being built is too long for this to have come directly from a prisoner. It could have come from a young maid in attendance on an elderly prisoner who then recorded this in her own dotage.

Yes you are correct. In Mexico they found buried fetuses or babies in the walls of convents or churches. Nuns suffering at the hands of soldiers or priests or having affairs. This convent seems relatively tame for its age. Only a couple of small areas give a creepy feeling - but most of it is lovely, bright and more like a working enterprise. Although I feel the Nuns were taken advantage of by someone selling them on unnecessary renovations and taking their money.

Ryan there is a wonderful book out now where cancer cells are called "King cells or Emperor cells" . It is called Emperor of all Maladies and is amazingly well researched and has won many non fiction book awards. Written by Siddartha Mukherjee. I do not remember whether or not he refers to Queen cells however. Interesting, yes?

You should take high resolution photos of the writings on the wall for posterity before they get destroyed. You can also use different colored lights (wavelengths) to bring out the writing. There's probably a conservator at a local university who can help with all that.

about the writing on the wall....I did some searching. The time frame and mentions of poisons affair lead me to thing of Madame De Montespan. She did spend about seven years at that convent right after the poisons affair. She was dying. She did leave the convent after seven years to go to a family members chateau to take a cure unavailable at the convent but she died anyway within a few years. But she was at the heart of the poisons issue and lost her favor as the kings mistress over it and was sent away.

You might get a UV light to help see the writing. It sometimes helps bring out some types of dyes. They aren’t very expensive, so you wouldn’t be out much if it didn’t work.

Interesting the choice of metric measurement. Simon stated that he set the studs at 600. In Canada, even though we are still in feet and inches for construction, would speak in centimeters when speaking metric. We would call that 60 centimetres, not 600 mm.
