Very true. And Harper Lee's insight into this only makes the character and story that much more authentic, in my opinion. And there's nothing in her writing, either in Mockingbird or Go Set a Watchman that contradicts this idea.

I watched the movie myself. Despite the pressure and division, he does the right thing. Him telling Scout almost feels like Jesus reminding us to turn the other cheek and love your enemies. And like Jesus, Atticus reminds us that our choices to love and serve will sometimes bring division and opposition.
@ComradeConfucius3 жыл бұрын
The Junzi (supreme gentlemen) of Confucius is said to possess 5 Virtues : Ren, Yi, Zhi, Xin, and Li. All these 5 Virtues are possessed by few men in this world, and if you have all 5 of them, you are a Supreme Gentleman - the ideal that every Confucian strives for but few possess. Atticus Finch possesses all 5: Ren (Benevolence) - Confucius was actually the first person to coin the Golden Rule: "Do not impose on others what you would not have them impose on you." Confucius urged rulers to educate wrongdoers rather than punish them, and he was a huge proponent of restorative justice. Besides that, he also outlawed the practice of ritual sacrifice that was customary of the time. (when an important man or woman of the time died, his or her favourite servants would have to follow them to the grave) Confucius preached benevolence to our fellow man, and even got very angry at the practice of clay figurines being sacrificed because of what they represented. As Confucius said, a murder is still murder even if it complies with tradition. Atticus never hesitates to lend a hand to those in need, even if it inconveniences himself to do so. He does not accept payment for his services to Mr Cunningham knowing that Mr Cunningham is too poor to pay him. Instead, he accepts payment in the way of hickory nuts. He feeds Mr Cunningham's son Walter, and he is very kind to his African-American servant Calpurnia. In the second book, he finances the orphan Henry's education and takes him under his wing in his law practice. Yi (Uprightness) - According to Confucius, civil disobedience to an unjust institution is your moral duty as a gentleman. When Confucius was alive, he was hated by the elites of the Warring States for refusing to compromise on his beliefs, and he sometimes said things that REALLY offended the Dukes of the Warring States. For instance, the King of one such state asked him how he could curb the societal problem of thievery in his Kingdom. Confucius replied that the King should set a good example as the ruler, metaphorically speaking, is the wind, and the subjects are grass. The grass bends according to the will of the wind, hence just as children take their example from their parents, so do subjects take their example from their ruler. As such, he was expelled from several states, and almost killed for refusing to mince words. Atticus walks a straight and narrow path, and does not lie or defy his conscience. When he suspects his son Jem has killed his assailant Bob Ewell in self-defence, Atticus does not want to lie on his behalf. Atticus accepts the case to defend the black man Tom Robinson even though he knows full well that this will cause his reputation in the community to suffer, and he will lose friends and make enemies. He knows that their chance of winning is slim. Yet he even so, he does it because it's the right thing to do. Zhi (knowledge) - Confucius was a strong proponent of education as he believed that the only way one could improve as a human being was through the pursuit of knowledge. Confucius' classroom was somewhat of an egalitarian society, as it didn't matter if you were a prince or a pauper - all his students were equal in his eyes, and treated just the same. In fact, if you were too poor to pay his fees, Confucius would accept a simple token of wine or dried meat. Atticus is an avid reader, and he inculcates the habit of reading in his children at an early age, spending quality time with them reading books. This makes his children more precocious and knowledgeable about the world, and when they enter school, they find that they are ahead compared to the rest of the class. As Confucius said, you cannot open a book without learning something. Xin (Loyalty) - Despite the fact that Atticus has strong disagreements with his sister Aunt Alexandra, who is a very traditional Southern woman, he understands that blood is thicker than water, and that family comes first. He ensures his children treat her with the proper deference and respect one should treat their elders, who have 'eaten more salt than they have eaten rice'. He also tries to maintain good relations with his racist neighbors since they are all part of the same community and must all live together in harmony. Li (Propriety) - When his daughter Scout comes home fuming at her teacher for telling her to stop reading with her father, Atticus is not offended. Despite the fact that he is acutely aware of the rigid and conformist school system, he still urges his daughter to pay the proper respect to an educator, and he continues to read with her in secret. To him, 'giving face' to the teacher is important even though the teacher may be wrong. In the Confucian way of thinking, it is improper to be rude or answer back to a teacher, who is a transmitter of knowledge.
