What a beautiful family!! I care for someone with DS, my son came home on a Monday asked if his friend could stay the night on Friday, I said I need to talk to the parents, the following wed we were at wrestling and my son came up to me in the stands with an arm around his buddy and my heart melted I don’t know if my son realized his friend had DS, that Friday was the 1st sleepover his friend had ever been invited to!! And I help his single mom take care of him, he’s a blessing!! He’s changed my whole family for the better!! We are all happy especially when he’s around!! He’s a joy!!

Good for you! He is such a sweet baby and a beautiful young man! My oldest son is autistic and I was told he would never work, marry or leave home, loose his language skills by three to six etc. My son is now an adult, who works for a living, lives with his love and they live very comfortably. His female partner has brought him out of his comfort zone to try new things and even travel! I am so very greatful to have been his mom and come along for his journey through life!

Janine, you made the right choice. My 50 year old Down syndrome son is a huge blessing in our lives. He's so loving and helpful. Don't worry too much about the health issues. My son has aortic valve insufficiency and has actually improved over the years. You are enjoying each new stepping stone conquered. But that will only increase as he gets a job, learns and performs life skills for your family and develops his own God given talents, with your help and encouragement. The slogan, Up With Downs says it all.

What a strong resilient mother. I can say that we all hover a bit when their young especially when they have complex medical needs. As a mom, someone who works in education and a parent to a micropremie, I suggest you try to remember mama that Dylan fits in and has self confidence but sometimes as protective parents we feel we need to over Involve and it can be good or a bit of a hindrance to our little one. I suggest making a strong connection with a few school staff members like a secretary, safety, lunch and environmental services and introduce your child and sincerely form a friendship so they are compelled to pay extra attention to the child and even advocate for him when you are not there. Give your number and meet for lunch on weekends or send little treats to show appreciation. Your child will feel like they have a bond with an adult who can look out for them as our teachers are so overwhelmed and out numbered. For what it's worth, let him see you feeling glad of his independence and respect his choices don't over think things. If he pushes a truck into a wall and the other kids are racing the trucks, perhaps they have not figured out how much fun it is to do things his way. Let your other children pick activities and you just sit back, I bet you will be amazed. You and Dad have done great. You gave Dylan wings let him choose how to fly.

Paige_xx You’re his big sister? You’re clearly a great big sister. I have autism and as the youngest boy my sister was very protective. I don’t think that comment meant any harm, but sometimes parents wrap kids who’ve been ill in cotton wool and don’t get to see everything they’re capable of. I think your parents are doing amazing but they’ll be able to relax a little and realize he can hold his own. Take care, all of you.

Karen Reed there is a man with Down syndrome who lives near me. He has a job. He has his own granny flat in his parents backyard. He makes his own money, goes shopping and has friends. He’s happy and that’s what matters. He’s even got a tattoo. They’re not any less human. They can still live a normal life
@grayskindablue5 жыл бұрын
Sunshine Rose not trying to sound rude but how is the tattoo relevant?
@grayskindablue5 жыл бұрын
Karen Reed With this much support this early? Very far. You don’t need a super high IQ to accomplish things and be happy, you don’t even need an average one. He has two typical older siblings to copy which is a great way to learn for anyone. He’s being taught independence and given support in almost every aspect. Generally Down’s kids are very happy which makes bullying easier to brush off, and very determined which makes them work hard at even basic jobs, and finding independence is something they work their asses off to do. Not to mention the amazing Special Olympics community that can teach these kids life skills and give them purpose. Hang out with someone in the community, you’d probably learn not to rush to judgments. But I have no doubt the kid has everything set up to go far.

In Germany the kids here start Kindergarden at zur Age of 3 month sometimes
@alex732176 жыл бұрын
That is because the word is used for completely different things around the world (as it is a German word that's the right definition :P) in Germany kindergarten = daycare, you usually don't do any preschool work, it's pretty much ... well... daycare. Kid's start at 3 and leave at 6 for first grade. (Most countries have it be from 3-6) In the United States Kindergarten = Preschool and it is the year before kids start first grade and it is usually at the same building as the elementary school United Kingdom The UK doesn't have Kindergarten and doesn't use the word. They have preschool which can be a year or more, depending when you start and I guess their last year of preschool before first grade is somewhat comparable to the US kindergarten definition (it should be noted however, that there may be multiple years in preschool, so kids won't start first grade at idk 3)

This will continue for the rest of their lives. This happened to my mother's best friend. I played with their daughter who had Downs for a long time. They lived next door to ours so I would go there because Faye had such cool dolls and records. Then one day I was growing up normal and Faye was staying the same even though she was five years older than me. I stopped going there slowly and then stopped. Faye was so sad and couldn't understand what was happening. Her parents had her at a real old age. Well we moved and later on my mother heard that eventually both her parents had expired. Faye was put away and didn't hear about her no more.

When Dylan was at Kindy , I kept thinking " back off , let him explore and stop being so overprotective. Yes, the child had DS but they are more capable of things than parents allow them to.

When a kid in the family has problem, which could be physical, emotional or intellectual, as a mother, the first thing in my mind is : when I am gone, who is going to look after my problem kid ? Siblings ? or institutions ?
