Charlotte is an autistic person who has Down syndrome. Her husband, Riley, is also autistic. The two plan to one day have a child. They are currently in college so that they can provide their future children with a safe and stable home. Charlotte and Riley describe love as "a feeling of connection even when you are not together, you just feel it in your heart".

Indeed, what a sweet point. Yes, because they're not trying so hard to abstract its purpose and what such a dynamic does to their overall emotions. They mentally are better off in that way, to not have such a need to mindlessly abstract and make a song and dance about marriage and relationship as if it requires some artistic or poetic interpretation or overachieving, Olympian nature. This is why this channel is so great, it showcases how beautiful, curious, and/or livable life can be with varying perspectives of how it works.

Absolutely! As a parent, it’s our responsibility to ensure we give our children the tools they need to survive and cope in a world regardless of any disability they have. My eldest is autistic and although not diagnosed, hardly anyone would know he is on the spectrum because we’ve taught him how to speak to strangers, how to hold a conversation, what people expect in social situations, and he can cope now. He used to get so anxious but that is now just a memory for him, not his actuality now. It’s all about highlighting their strengths and giving them tools to cope with the areas they are weaker in. I love these guys because they compliment each other so well!

@@EZ-IZZY1995 Imperfection is not referring to their syndromes, it's referring to their personalities and traits which thankfully applies to ALL of us. Most average people have ridiculously high expectations of complete perfection from themselves, their partners, or their whole relationship which is just not how real relationships work. You may have weak spot in the way you act after a tiring day of work, or your partner may take jokes more seriously than you anticipate. @harmony6643
@harmony6643 11 ай бұрын
@@hannahwitts1339 Because a lot of times it can help people, especially with autism, to have very specificly phrased questions or else it can cause confusion or overload be ause many autistic people tend to think about things very much in detail and deeply and thoroughly. For example: A teacher at school sets the assignment "imagine you're on a holiday and write a card home". A neurotypical person might just write some shallow things and use some typical postcard phrases in them without much meaning, a neurodivergent person might be irritated by that task because, of course, what you write in a postcard and how you phrase it depends on who exactly at home you are writing to (grandparent, parent, young sibling, best friend, etc.) and also where you are on your vacation (snow, sea, woods, mountains, city) and how long you are staying there (just for a weekend, a week, several weeks) and for what purpose you came there (have an adventure, relax, meet with a friend who loves away, etc.). Another example: Someone asking "what colour is an elephant" would typically get the response "grey" from a neurotypical person because grey is what elephants are usually portrayed as. An autistic person, however, might think about an elephant in india vs. in africa (where they have different shades of skin colour) or about an elephant covered in mud or even their blue toy elephant and might be confused whether to answer "grey" or "brownish" or "blue" or whatever. Giving specific instructions (i. e. asking "what colour does an elephant have who was born in india and has clean skin) can clear up these multiple options and make it easier to not have misunderstandings when communicating.

To see these two young people together with a simplicity of how they feel about each other is a truly heartfelt love above and beyond that of which so many of us do not come to ... they do not have a lot of clutter in their thoughts to bog them down with too many questions or what ifs and maybes...it is just there in their hearts and minds as they look at each other with a smile on their face and ... YES...a twinkle in their eye... It is an enormous amount of contentment and assurance that the other one is there even if they are NOT in the same place...a quiet joy...very serene and calm... Precious moments... Thank you, Charlotte and Riley for letting us hear your story... It is truly a beautiful thing...May God Bless you as you live and love

I had an elderly down syndrome patient who was at the end of her life. She was a mother and grandmother. She was a GREAT mother and grandmother! She opened my eyes sooo much, and i would absolutely never question parenthood for anyone with a disability. Edit: This was 17 years ago at the beginning of my career. When I 1st read her chart, I thought it was mistaken. I wrongfully had preconceived notions and judgment. It was ALL erased immediately when I saw her interact with her children and grandchildren! She taught me some very valuable lessons. I'm so glad I got to witness her love and care for her family first hand!

I’m expecting my first child and she has Down syndrome, I keep thinking to name her Charlotte and call her Charlie. I loved when Charlie said, “having Down syndrome and autism is a normal thing.” This is a wonderful interview, I like this couple very much 💕 they make me happy.

I've spoken with Charlie. She's a spitfire! She told me stories that made me realize that we have been underestimating people with DS completely. She is intelligent, sarcastic, a go-getter and defeats all of those stereotypes of DS.

Part of that is they often lived with parents or nursing homes and were infantilized and did not mature to no fault of their own. My mom was a community worker for people living independently and just like “normal” people mom said it was how much the parents supportively encouraged rather than tried to control everything that seemed to determine maturity and competence.

I know you mean well, but by and large "other/differently abled" is considered offensive. I am disabled, I can't do some things that most people can. And that's okay, it's not mean or wrong- it is simply a fact. I am disabled. Do I have different abilities than others? Yes, everyone does. That doesn't change the fact that I am disabled. In my neck of the woods, disabled people find such terms and "soft" language to be incredibly demeaning. That kind of language is used to sooth non disabled people. It is to make them more comfortable, not those who are disabled. Anyways, if you read all this I hope you have a good day!
