I really appreciate how they let him tell his story through his wife. She makes a huge effort to let him talk for himself in the interviews, and doesn't tell his story for him. That's such an important, empowering action, even though it seems small, and it would just be easier for her to talk instead of taking the time to use the board and let him speak. She is pretty amazing, as are all the people around him who support his new goals.

@@24POWERS No, absolutely no. Emotions are chemical triggers in the brain, and don't work the same for everyone. Given depression is lethal, I highly recommend nobody take this advice, and coordinate with medical professionals if you are struggling. You don't just wake up one day and decide you are going to be happy, and therefore you are. It takes significant work and understanding. This isn't a bum leg you just need to work through. This advice can cause someone to fall into remission and even pander to psychotic delusions. This is SUCH a hazardous a statement to make concerning mental health.
@siim6055 жыл бұрын
"A disability will never have the power to take happiness away" - I get you want to be positive, but this is such a non-clever statement. There's a thousand disabilities one can have that can take everything away from you, happiness included.
@queencerseilannister35195 жыл бұрын
As Mr.Rogers said, "Part of the problem with the word 'disabilities' is that it immediately suggests an inability to see or hear or walk or do other things that many of us take for granted. But what of people who can't feel? Or talk about their feelings? Or manage their feelings in constructive ways? What of people who aren't able to form close and strong relationships? And people who cannot find fulfillment in their lives, or those who have lost hope, who live in disappointment and bitterness and find in life no joy, no love? These, it seems to me, are the real disabilities."

Did you feel used in a relationships especially after time when your partner lost feeling for you and continued to be with you and use you for your benefits? Yes? Well BINGO! You are projecting your own hard feelings and bad experiences on two innocent women. Man up buddy! Get your ass in therapy and learn to cry and learn to grieve. Find a male friend to be your mentor. Learn to love good male friends and female friends. Learn how to have long term intimate relationships. On the sauce or numbing out on drugs? Stop it and go to an AA or NA meeting. Get a sponsor ASAP. Your anger is channeled in an ugly way against these two women. Man up like Nick in this video. Did you even watch this video???? Use your anger in a positive, healthy way making small gains. Man up brother!!! Now apologize to Sarah and Robyn.

This is one of my biggest fears. My boyfriend has severe nerve damage and, while he can still walk now, he's been diagnosed to be paralyzed by 30 (diagnosed at 14, now 21). We've been together for 6 years and I can't imagine life without him. Watching things like this, seeing couples go through such a hard time, it gives me hope and confidence and reminds me that if he does end up needing my care I will be able to do it with no problem.

You can tell in his own mind he’s not JUST disabled.. He knows he is.. His wife knows he is.. and that’s okay.. It’s obvious he struggles more than most with some of his physical limits and he gets angry and upset sometimes just like everyone else.. Along with the smiles in the video, we also saw him angry and frustrated.. I’m sure it took a lot of tears to get to some of those smiles we see and it’s not genuine to say he doesn’t recognize the gravity of his situation.. He knows what it was like before this and I’m sure misses many aspects of his older life, but I’m also sure he wouldn’t trade where he is today, with his body building and wife and children, for the world… He’s made a new normal that is better than most people’s lives in some aspects, but that is not without strife that is greater than most.. Where he’s also different than most is in the amount of mental strength he has to power through everyday, and to continue on trying to rehabilitate himself; and live his life, his way, with his wife and children.. His determination is truly commendable, his energy is brilliant, and his story is motivational.. His physical strength is also impressive af.. I can tell by his work in the gym he’d knock me right over like he did the other buff dude 😂

wow, I really feel for him. I think having all of your mental faculties but being unable to express yourself has to be horribly frustrating and difficult. I'm very happy for him that he met Nikola and is able to have that full time love and companionship. he's amazing!
@IntoBlackHouse8 жыл бұрын
It is not only horribly frustrating, but beyond claustrophobic and terrifying. I was in the ICU for a month battling guillain barre syndrome. It left my body paralyzed and I was barely able to utter a word or string together an audible sentence like "I'm hot" or "I'm thirsty". This was very scary and upsetting. I had an alphabet board similar to the guy in the video as well as a board that had basic needs the nurse could point to and I could with all my might nod "yes" to. However it was still living hell and that isn't an overstatement. Being able to express yourself is one of the basic needs every living thing needs. Even if you are merely being ignored or discounted in what you are saying, it strikes a chord in you where you feel upset and sort of claustrophobic as if no one understands or cares. Imagine what this is like for someone who actually cannot speak or use their body to get their point across. It's awful and I can't imagine many things worse, if any.

I'm 15 and my dad had 2 strokes when I was 10 which wiped a lot of his memory + paralyzed all of his right side of his body. He couldn't walk, talk, feed himself, cleanse himself, etc. He didn't even remember his own family. It took a hard toll on my 2 younger siblings, I, and the rest of our family. My mom was having to raise us 3 kids while taking care of what felt like another child. It's been 4 years now (he's now 38) and he's gotten so much better. He can stand on his own, talk on his own a little, feed himself, move around way more independently, he completely understand everything around him, and so much more. I'm proud of how far he's come and I love my dad a lot. I know what this struggle feels like and my dad is my biggest idol. He's such a fighter and this man is too! Such an amazing video.

I can't believe how similar my experience was. When I was 9 (I'm now almost 20) my dad had a large stroke that paralyzed his right side too. He was completely nonverbal at first but now is able to walk, communicate (still has aphasia but my family can always understand) but still can't use his right arm. I felt similarly with being the oldest with two younger sisters and seeing my mom struggle with raising us and also him. Was getting down lately thinking about how I missed out on my dad but seeing your comment made me feel a little less alone and if you see this I hope it can do the same for you :)

I am a nurse and had a patient with locked in syndrome. To use the letter/word board, he used a pair of glasses frames with a laser pointer taped to it. This made it easier for those trying to see/understand what letter/word he was pointing at and cut down on frustration with communicating especially for those who did not work with him everyday. The board had common words in addition to the alphabet to make communication easier. I know any ideas can help sometimes. God bless

My mother was locked in for 20 years. I cared for her the last 10, and the very last 7 alone- just mother n I. And I memorized the board and just put my hands up like at shoulder level- open like before you clap your hands are open. It's hard work and I can say the.most wonderful moment of my entire life- I became one with my mother. 2 people using one body/ mine. And I would do it all over n over again. I was trully blessed. Our lives looked hard n sad to others but it wasn't. We were happy and it became our way of life. God bless and keep you both. oh and my mother just spelled with her eyes for 10 yrs. because they said she would never speak again, no one did speech therapy. I worked with her for 3 years of moving mouth and facial expressions. SHE GOT THEM ALL BACK, YUP! And in the end I was reading her lips very little board. My mother's brain was 100% normal she just had a chiropractor wipe out her "Ponds at the base of her head where it meets the neck. I can't even begin to say how much coming across this story and channel has made my day and my life. It shows people the reality that he is a full person and has value. If people only knew.
