I admire how incredibly resilient you are. I had a dving injury and I am a c5/6 Tetraplegic, yet I have been riding since I was 5. I was completely dependent when I came home from the hospital but worked hard and slowly rebuilt my independence. It took 2 hours to out my pants on, now its 4-5 minutes. I learned to shower, transfer, cook, drive and finally live without assistance. I met the love of my life and got married two years ago. He sees me, not the chair.I am currently working on my Ph.D in Clinical Psychology. Nothing is impossible and life is full. Laugh when you want to cry and never say no to an invitation. I’ve been a T7 paraplegic since I was a kid, 40 years ago. Life is challenging but awesome. I graduated high school, college, married my college sweetheart, have an awesome professional career, and have twins. I’ve travelled the world. None of it was easy, but it’s all been worthwhile. You get out of life what you put into it. Sophie will be fine. She, like me, will never walk again, but it’s not the worst thing that happens to people.

I was 23 yrs old and was in the Navy when I became an incomplete quad. July 6th, 1987 at 1640 PST. I did not know the seriousness of my accident until I was 60 today. I thought my wchair could crush the stick in front of me. Boy, was I wrong! Now I'm on bed rest and I have a plate and screws covering C-5,6,7 from the first accident. A week ago I was going for a new MRI. My current accident basically destroyed all of my vertebra from T-12 through S-1. I have 6 bulging disc. T-12 DISC is herniated, ALL the fluid is gone. 1 herniated disc the other 5 disc are torn and and leaking the fluid out that was inside the disc for the past 37 yrs. The surgery to fix the mess down there! The first step is to get my body at it's best . Once they go in and clear all the damage away, the process for healing begins. After it's healed well, they can go back in and cut a few incisions for the last phase of my procedures. What or how long this part might take is still unclear. After Tuesday I will know. I've had many yrs to reflect on what happened. I can honestly say that even though it was a surprised me, God new just what He was coming. He knew that as long as I could be of service to Him, I would endure it. He had me buy certain items as gifts. I never questioned him. Till after I came home and I was alone and very lonely. It would be 35 yrs before I learned that 4 people have given their hearts to Jesus; be ause of the seeds I planted. If only 1 person gave their heart to Jesus, to me, I still would do it all again!!! I went from being a ASIA "A" -can barely move, to up and walking alone. I competed in 7 categories and won Gold in every one of themat the PVA summer games. After my last surgery and I get the drs approval, I'm going to Snowmass Village in Colorado for the older folks!!!😅😮 Please keep me in your prayers 🙏 ❤️. As I will do for each of you. God.loves you!! He left us as Witnesses for HIM. TIMES are changing. You are definitely going to want Him on your side. Listening to Serve Him~ My truck is getting an elevator...Man Magnet...hehehe😂. I wish the film makers would acknowledge in these documentaries that being able to live the life Sophie does, - having a fully wheelchair accessible flat all to herself next to her parents and a separate space for her carers to be, is never possible for most people. This is extreme privilege because governments around the world do not support disabled people enough. Coming from money is what has improved her quality of life just as much as her determination. And I don't say that to take away anything that she went through, she seems great. Just a note to the non-disabled viewers out there - if you know a wheelchair user who is down on life and not thriving, please do not blame their attitude. The world can be a cruel place for disabled people

My husband is a C-4 C5 Quad. I have been loving him and helping him physically for almost 40 years. We met when we were in our mid 20’s and have been together ever since. We have a rather hard life physically speaking compared to the average, but LOVE CONQUERS ALL. It is possible to have a very fun exciting and fulfilled life with meaning, it just depends on how one looks at life. If you have a good attitude and you try you will go far. That goes for the caregiver and the disabled people as well. Life is what you make of it.

If something ever happens where you can't take care of yourself I am gone. I'm not taking care of a cripple.while I applaud her honesty it certainly shows her true colors. I attended their wedding where they said the traditional vows of in sickness and health etc. I told him he needs to drop her right now and move on. They have no kids so he doesn't have to worry about that. Is it selfish to admit when you are not up to a situation like this? I would never take care of anyone else's kids but my own . Quadriplegia occurs when the neck area of the spinal cord is injured. Sometimes people with quadriplegia can move their arms, but have no control over their hand movements. They cannot grasp things or make other motions which would allow them a little independence.

Loss of sensation from my waist down but looking into issues with my Lumbar. Rehab is going well. You're right on target. Seeing someone with this kind of disability makes you appreciate what you have, makes you almost ashamed at dwelling on the petty "problems" we grouse about. You might know that Kris Reeve, who played Superman in the movies, became a quad after falling off a horse. He was even more disabled, needing a ventilator in order to breathe. I admire this girl's determination and grit. As for me, being so active and independent, I might end my life.

Oh Sophie honey ! You are so beautiful. I know what you and your family have gone through. My niece was a quadriplegic as well. She was c1 and was ventilator dependent. Her vocal cords were paralyzed, she couldn’t swallow and the only movement she had was her face. She was six at the time of her accident and I was one of her care givers for the last 15 years of her life. She lived 30 years like that. She was so much like you. Gorgeous and happy and busy all the time. Her care givers were like family for us. We had to read her lips and misunderstandings were often quite hilarious. She graduated with honors from high school despite it all. You and she are my hero’s forever. We heartbreaking lost her in October 2017 due to her trachea hemorrhaging from so many years of having a trach. You are blessed you have so much my dear. Hold tight to your amazing attitude. Life is still beautiful. Much love.

Not because money will cure her or take her disability away, but because it's given her better life quality. Romy it wouldn't matter in NZ if her family had money or not. As i've replied to someone else higher up, we have ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation). Every working person here pays 1.5% of their wages in a tax to cover ACC, and employers also contribute for each worker. However, although funded by workers, it covers literally every person in NZ, regardless of nationality, or work history, for costs associated with an accident that happens in New Zealand, while they're in New Zealand. Her carers are paid for by ACC, as are her rehabilitation, medicines and equipment. Even her cabin most likely was paid for by ACC, as it pays for renovations or necessary construction costs to return home and make the property meet the needs of the injured person. Her family may cover some costs, such as alternative therapies, or a partial fee if only partly funded, which is normally $30 or less per visit. ACC also pays 80% of your pre-accident income, and adjusts yearly for inflation. If a young person is injured before ever working, they can apply for an assessment of income based on the average wage in NZ. Her income will also be propped up by social security payments, such as Disability Allowances etc. We have universal medical care here, and no, our taxes aren't high either.

+vKarl71 We do, but we don't actually need Health Insurance in NZ to get the care Sophie is. We have ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) and universal health care for all residents. This includes funding for disabilities and carers. Health Insurance in New Zealand doesn't cover carers etc. That is covered either by ACC or the government.

If Sophia or anyone else in a similar position is ever reading this, just know that you are still lovable and you will see someone who sees through the disability!! My boyfriend has a spinal cord injury, and is paralyzed from the waist down (i didn't know him as able-bodied, this only happened to him about 2 years ago (at 18) after a tumor was found and removed from his spine). I love him more than anything, and his disability has very little effect on our relationship as we've figured out how to do things differently. I don't see him as his disabilities, and sometimes I even forget he has them (which he finds quite funny lol). He is the most determined and positive person I've ever met. Watching this was actually quite strange for me, as a lot of the journey we saw Sophia go through - my boyfriend is/has gone through too (you also have the exact same water bottle?? Which just made it ten times weirder for me as we live in the UK, I know its just a water bottle but with other similarities, this really takes the biscuit lmao)

Hey my friend. I was 20 when I broke my neck. I was one of those "shot in a million" people that went from completely paralyzed to being able to walk 6 months after the accident. While I had 2 fingers with function on the left, I had nothing on the right. I found a surgeon that would re-engineer my right hand fingers to run off the wrist muscles. I see you have the wrist function which would be the function you need. it's accomplished over a series of 2-3 surgeries. The first one is to get your fingers out of your palm. I can see you struggle with that problem. I see that from miles away on any quad. It felt so good to be able to do things just because they weren't curled in my palm. I told my surgeon that the thing I loved the most, was that I could shake peoples hands. From that point the doctor will start to motor the fingers. After the second surgery you start to have the ability to grasp things. The most important thing is that this function, even in only one hand, will give you back the ability to live on your own. Please give it some thought buddy.

Sophia, I can't begin to imagine how awful in some respects this must make you feel. To see millions of people take movement for granted and never see it as a gift, while you struggle everyday . I'm sure the never ending talk inside our heads asks the question to God about "why me?" with never really receiving a satisfactory answer either. Perhaps your strength and courage is a gift to this world and you become a light to others as people draw power from the flame that burns inside you. You make others see just how fragile life is and for us to be ever so grateful for the blessings we have. This life we have here can be just brutally unfair but we all just keep moving forward the best we can. It would be nice if we'd all help each other but I don't see that happening on a large scale in this lifetime. @@PannaLola.... My dad was from Poland and my mom was Irish. My dad was a jerk and I never met him util I was 15. He was always trying to make it in life but had one of the kindest spirits I ever saw. My childhood was so awful I was just trying to stay alive for the first 17 years. It helped to shape me in life though to have more empathy and compassion than almost anyone else I know so in a way...(not all) but in a way, it did make me maybe a better person. Who knows about life anyhow? Just when you have a sense of how to live it ....it's over like the seasons of the year, gone. May God bless you every day of your life.

From what I've researched, such new therapies should be possible in the not so distant future. I hope it will happen soon so that people like Sophia can regain their independence. You remind me so much of my 19 almost 20 year old daughter, Meg. She was in a ski accident a little over a year ago. Meg is now a paraplegic. She is so determined just like you. My boyfriend and I were talking marriage and we were out celebrating when he tried to stop a man for beating his wife in the parking lot of a bar. He was stabbed in the neck, at the base of his spine, severing the nerves, leaving him a quad... We stayed together for 12 months afterward, I loved him and would have stayed with him. I tried to get him to live again and we went skydiving regularly - it got him out of the chair and feeling alive... But he latter took his own life...so although its been 20 something years since his passing, today I morned the loss of both my dream, my boyfriends, and for this young lady...

Horses are such powerful creatures. When I was a child at summer camp, a horse rolled over onto one of our counselors. She had to be rushed to the hospital by ambulance, but miraculously, she was entirely fine. No broken bones, no injuries beyond a few scrapes. She could have died.

Before I even got to the part where she mentioned she was doing therapy, I thought, "this girl is SO going to be walking again!" I will not be surprised one bit the day she walks on her own. Also her family arrangement is awesome. I love that she gets her own independence by her own house, but her parents are only a few feet away. I would love for that. Also, that interaction between her and the horse that she fell off of was so touching. I couldn't tell for sure from the little bit they showed, but it looked like the horse knew exactly what happened.

I went horse riding two times, in my life. I'm very inexperienced. My second time on a very irresponsible trip, on my side too actually. The horse was riding at a good pace, not running but not even walking. I lost my footing, and I was hanging on the side of the horse. I couldn't get back on while riding, so I decided to let myself go. I tried to fall as far as possible from his hooves but he still kicked my in the head. Few minutes prior the accident I suddenly remembered I hadn't latched my helmet. This accident is a constant reminder in my head of how lucky I am to be still alive and in health. Sophia is amazing. It's such a toss up when you ride horses. I rode and showed horses in my younger days. Fell off many times. I was never seriously hurt and was fortunate. I had a friend who was killed when a horse reared up and fell backwards on her. You just never know day to day. So much admiration for her rebuilding her life after being injured and paralyzed. As a father of a 36 year old son who lost his left leg in Dec. of 2019, this hurts! Mentally working your way past all the emotions isn't an easy road. While in the hospital, he said "Dad, what woman will ever want me now?". I was so heart broken for him. But like I told him, if a woman doesn't accept you for having one leg, you don't want her in your life anyway. Sophia is beautiful inside and out, and with her determination and great attitude, she can live her life. It will just be different.
